If I'm using 3dsMax, what's the best renderer to use? I'd really prefer something that is relatively straightford and simple to use but I really just want to know what you guys use and why. Pic not related

hey guys, I'm really sorry to ask you for help. I am actually a programmer and just want to make this model work. I'm trying to export this to an .fbx so I can use it in Unreal 4, my problem is with the bones and making it one full mesh. so, I tried to things. 1. joining everything together by selecting it with "A", and then ctrl + j this makes the bones actually not work at all, the wheels don't turn, and UE4 has a hard time with the shape of the wheels to make the collisions. 2. joining everything except the wheels, but then when I do that, UE4 imports everything as different meshes (it skips 3 wheels also for some reason) and then I can't make it work either because the wheels are not in the same skeletal mesh. I don't really know what to do, and I tried asking in the UE forums but it's kind of new so there is not much support.

Hey guys, I'm new to 3D modelling, using blender. Any idea what is causing these Wolverine claws when I view my model in Object mode but not edit mode? I made the hand by modeling the shovel shape of the palm, modeling the fingers, then attaching the fingers vertex by vertex. I thought it might go away when I finished closing off all the faces, but it's still there. I don't have any modifiers on either, as far as I can tell.

NX Users

Any NX users about? I was trained up on NX but my company sent me to university recently, which use solidworks for most modules. I just can't get my head around solidworks. I mean I get how it works and I can use it but everything just seems so backward and hard. I've heard good things about Catia, might give that a try next. tl;dr - General engineering 3D modelling discussion.

I've been looking into Skyrim modding for a little bit now and something is confusing me. I'm used to working with NPR 3d where I never see textures done this way. What is this darkening of textures and why is it done? I'm looking for a bit of a detailed or specific reason, I can guess that it's done because they make up for whatever lightness is missing in the texture with shading/game lighting, but why exactly they do it that way and what they make it up with specifically is a little beyond me at the moment. Additionally, is there an easy method of reversing this? I would like non-darkened versions of these textures, basically. What process do they use to create these textures? They don't just paint black at 50% or so transparency over it, right? Simply turning up brightness or lightness doesn't really seem to cut it. Thanks for any help and sorry if this is a basic question. I have lurked here for awhile but I haven't seen it brought up.

When you have a solution of multiple compounds, or when you're boiling water, if you look closely you can see ripples in the liquid which correspond to areas where the index of refraction within the liquid changes rapidly, do you guys know of any work on rendering this sort of effect? If the picture is too difficult to see I'll try to make a webm of the effect.

so what exactly is the use of ngons when you can't use it for anything? every mesh will look like complete ass after getting triangulated so you have to retopologize the whole thing to make it usable. all this is making the whole creating process take more time than creating it with proper topology without ngon producing tools. it's annoying how more and more tools automatically generate ngons.
