I've been thinking about getting into 3D modeling and I just have one question: How necessary is it that I learn how to model people? Seems like a lot of threads on here are focused on people and animals. I ask because to be perfectly honest, I really have no interest in learning how to make human models. I would much rather focus on doing innanimate objects like guns, vehicles, random objects (boxes, cups, etc) than really anything living. So I guess what I'm really asking is, even if I know how to model the above examples very well, will not knowing or not being any good at making a character model be a big handicap and maybe prevent me from getting a job in the (very far) future?

Don't know if anyone here could help me out but I figured it's worth a shot. I'm trying to get something retopologized here in Zbrush and ran into this problem for the first time. Number 1 (Check out the picture) is what I'm trying to retopologize, number 2 is the 4 faces all nice and the way I'd like them, and number 3 is what happens when I apply skin thickness. I was hoping I could get some thickness right in Zbrush because it worked for me up until now but that little bulge is driving me crazy. I did quadruple check to make sure there aren't any messed up vertex points. Ideas?

The only one I know of is Blender. Blender isn't acceptable, because while faces can be set to 'flat' or 'smooth', you can't do that with edges. There are workarounds, but they would mess up the UV maps.

So Im currently a student learning 3D with the intention of one day going into game design.(though I still want to keep my doors open for other possibilities within 3D, cgi in films, architecture etc.) I want to start creating an online presence but first I need to establish some kind of branding, so my question is how exactly do I go about branding myself, specifically a name for a website etc. i've had a few ideas already like (myname)gameart.com (myname)art.com (myname)3dsketchbook.com but none of these seems to look/sound right, anyone already have their own branding or have an ideas?

When did you realise you weren't as good as you thought while modeling? I consider myself able to make quite a lot of things with a picture model but some things I just can't do properly, such as a decent looking , hi-poly human head.

Hi all. Learning Blender, and I want to start working on texturing. I want to apply textures to the following object, which is supposed to be a basic pinball flipper. I don't know how to start though, particularly because the guide I'm following to learn how to unwrap UVs (here: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro/UV_Map_Basics) isn't unwrapping properly. It's probably because I'm not used to it yet. Here's a screenshot. The model could probably be done better, if that would help. Any advice is appreciated.

Hi /3/, I'm a noob in this field,and I'd like to use your help This is probably easy to you, I have to fit several 3D objects into a 2D image, I'd have to take into account perspective, illumination and the materials. I need to work with Mental Ray. Modelling is not part of this "project" so i'll get some objects on the internet. Any guides or parts of the 3DS max official guide that i should take into account?
