I'm trying to learn Maya after using 3ds Max for a little while and there's one thing that's really annoying me (correct me if I'm wrong): It seems like you have to use "Transform Component" every time you want to manipulate a vertex, edge of face in any way. In 3ds Max, all you did was select it. Is there something I'm missing or do I really have to do that all the time?

Hello 3DCG, Trying to learn C4D and I will be keeping all my questions here... What is this shit? It wasn't doing this before. I think I went in to settings to try and see if I could make a better render but it is worse. First I thought it was anti-aliasing and I think I have maxed that out to no avail... any ideas?

I would like to have a discussion that I am sure most of you have already have had. This goes for everyone. Who here does strictly modeling or animation or rigging, ect... Or do you do more then one thing? I've heard that you have a better chance at landing a job by sticking with one option. It may seem like a rhetorical question but why not do everything? I won't defend it because I only know how to animate sense I go to school for animation but most students do a little bit of everything and I cant wrap my mind around it. To me it is like a sculptor putting paintings in his portfolio or viseversa.

For the past couple weeks I've been toying around in Maya and crawling the web for tutorials of all breeds. I feel I'm getting the hang of it, but before I start really trucking into the unknown I would like to be aware of what the good and bad habits are for making a model with an intent to rig and animate it. I haven't been able to find a site or tutorial that explicitly lists anything like this, hence why I'm asking you. What are the good habits to adopt? What are the habits to avoid? When box modeling, what's the best method of keeping quads even? I found that, for instance, detailing a foot with edge loops would result in the leg also taking on the edge loops - which caused the leg to become uneven when smoothed. Is it alright to manually insert edge loops, provided they don't begin/end in an n-gon? I guess my biggest dilemma currently is "how do I know when to add and edge or edge loop to this area, and when NOT to". I understand that modeling is one of those "there's no real right way" things, but I want to make sure I don't develop any early habits which I could regret as I learn more about the process. Thanks.

So I'm working with a team on a smaller project. The old 3D modeler made models in 3ds max and exported them as .3DS. These .3DS models retained vertex color data. The new 3D modeler makes models in Blender, but his .3DS exports do not have color data. Does he need to enable some setting in blender or something to be able to have the color data retained in his 3DS exports? (Sorry if I made any mistake in terminologies, 3D is not my thing)

I can't find any Uv checkerboard(black and white, 2k) at the internets, so i tought you could give me a hand ;) And the second request is about my TV model. Im a noob and made it as a few separate objects, not as a single object and textured it without even burning a normal map. So I started to use cinema 4D and after a month or so of practice I still couldn't find the right material to make the work look as good as that.
