Ok, so I've recently got around to working on a 'hard surface texture painting' tutorial that's been sitting on my harddrive for the last couple of years (pic related). I'm looking for a free model viewer that's capable of displaying diffuse, normal and spec maps. I looked around on Google, and XNormal seems pretty popular, but doesn't seem to include spec maps. I was also unable to get the NVIDIA normal plugin working within CS6. It's supposed to show up under 'filters', but there's nothing there. This isn't such a huge problem though, since I came across CrazyBump. tldr: 1. Can anyone recommend a free model viewer that displays diffuse, normal and spec maps 2. Has anyone had any problems getting the NVIDIA normal map plugins for photoshop to work, and how did they fix them?

So I stumbled upon some tools, while watching some tutorial, that are apparently used commonly. - World Machine - MARI They were mentioned only in the tutorial. On other forums, and game design tool lists, they aren't mentioned. What are some other tools that are considered "gems" and very beneficial?

Hey /3/. Just started reading through some issues of 3D Artist, ImagineFX, and other /3/-related magazines. They're pretty great for interest pieces and I love the articles. I was wondering what other /3/-related media is out there. I'd love to find some good YouTube channels or podcasts that talk about the latest news and such in regard to 3D/CGI. Why don't people harden/polish their edges in zbrush? Is it that hard/time consuming? At first glance, images like this look great, but the soft clay like edges ruin the immersion. I think the raincoat/whatever was better done than the armor, but regardless, people will drool over this.

I'm having a problem with Blender. When I hit Tab to change from the Edit view or the Object view (or viceversa) my model always has something different between the two. For example it has some vectors in object view that are not in edit view. How do I solve this? It's driving me insane.

I'm considering joining Turbosquid as a seller. Anyone here have any experience with them? IIRC, they give you 40% of the price you set if you sell a model, but considering it's one of (if not the biggest) model retailers (and the only one I've even heard of), I wouldn't say that's too bad - and the more you sell, the higher that % goes. What can I expect from TS? Is it hard to get a model on there? Are there any hidden things I should know about?

how can i go about doing WoW, or LoL style texturing? I was once told to texture it regularly and than make it look that way by combining like normal map (green channel) bent normal map, detail map and AO until u get it to look that way? or is there another way?

Hello. /sci/ here, I was wondering how much mathematics do you guys on /3/ use in your work? I mean sure if you're doing it purely for the art aspect of it you wouldn't need it, but are you guys familiar with the theory behind it? Do you use it in your work or even just practice it as a hobby? I see you guys use the term topology a lot here, does it have any relation to the topology in mathematics? Also, what would be some interesting algorithms in computer graphics to take a look at? I'm not looking for implementations specifically, but am more interested in the theoretical side of things. Picture unrelated.

I am currently animating in source filmmaker, pretty good at it. But I want to continue with something better, better engine, more _more_. Is there any other software that allows me to animate like in SFM?
