If someone is a grappler, and wants into MMA, what basic striking do they need to survive and create openings to take the fight to the ground? If someone is a striker, and wants into MMA, what basic grappling do they need to survive and counter take downs, and stand back up? Keep in mind each fighter wants to focus on their primary art.

I want to do an /asp/ that I'll be able to do in old age as well and still be good at it. Artists, writers, musicians, chess players, they all benefit from age and experience...but things like martial arts/powerlifting just get worse with time, the older you get the weaker and more useless you become...so these things are generally pointless to pursue

http://www.aspworldtour.com/events/2014/mct/698/billabong-pro-tahiti Seriously someone has to be watching this. This is the best Teahupoo has been in competition for a long time. This would be fun to watch even if you aren't a surfing fan - Tahiti is seriously entertaining. >Pic related, it's from yesterday.

Poor Jack Swagger....

Poor Jack Swagger, it looks like WWE creative is jobbing the fuck out of him... I hope they don't drop him. He's a pretty good wrestler, its just he hasn't really had much opportunity to shine by creative, they just write him jobbing to everybody.

Have you ever knocked anyone out? In the ring, street, accidental tackle... everything counts.

What does /asp/ think about neck shots? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcaOr1TBA1w Do they really knock you out or is it some theoretical ninja crap?

Which punch could make someone hit the highest score in a machine like this? A hook? A straight? a Superman? a Overhand? I'm not talking about efficiency, but just strength. Also let's ignore body weight difference for the sake of this.

>Learning martial arts for self-defense This is a dumb reason. Learn MA because you just like it, it's fun, looks cool, it's exercise, etc... Learning for self-defense seems pragmatic but it's not. Why? Because physical confrontations are extremely low-probability events. In order to train effectively for "street fights" you need intense full-contact matches. What does this mean? You'll incur more injuries in your training than you ever will in a real fight. The chance you will be seriously hurt or killed in a real fight is astronomically low. The chance that you will be injured in full-contact training is guaranteed.

Does Ki/Chi Exist?

Does it exist in any way shape or form? Maybe not as a magical force that propels your opponents far away, but as energy that can be manipulated? Can it be used as a tool for fighters if properly researched and developed?

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE UFC?

117 posts and 0 image replies omitted. Click to view.
I just watched some of the earliest UFCs... guys from different styles just fucking going at each other, matches ending in doctor stoppage like half the time after only one or two minutes of absolute carnage... it looked like actual real fighting. But then I watched the latest UFC, number 175... and what the fuck gentlemen? These guys look like they don't even want to fight, tip-toeing around each other for like ten minutes while throwing a few tentative punches now and then, it looks like a boxing match at an old folks' home. Even when the punches connect, with those big gloves they don't seem to have any effect at all most of the time. And if they go to the ground it's like a friendly cuddling session there too, looks like both "fighters" just want to run out the clock or something. Long, 10+ minute matches with practically no damage done to anybody and in the end judges decide who "won". What the fuck guys, just what the fuck happened? I thought you guys said that MMA had "evolved" and gotten "better" since the start of the UFC. I didn't know you meant it evolved from "I'm gonna beat my opponent the fuck up right now" to "I'm not even gonna try to fight or take any risks and I will just wait for my opponent to take a risk that I can use against him". This is shit. I would rather watch Tai Chi championships.
