ITT we discuss Pickling

Does /ck/ sterilize jars before making pickles? I never did but keep hearing you -have- to. I boil the brine for five minutes to kill off molds, spores, toxins, staph, bacteria, enzymes, and yeasts. The pH usually stays around 3.3 so botulism and any other nasties aren't going to survive. Why is there so little faith in low pH being an effective barrier against food-borne illness?

I saw this for the first time yesterday at my local market. Has anyone else here had experience using this?

I've always been more of a Boy Scout popcorn guy but I saw some girls selling these cookies awhile back and was feeling generous, the lemons looked like the least terrible ones. I finally got around to opening them and these are goddamn more delicious than a box cookie has any right to be. Are all of the different types so good or did I get lucky and get the good kind? Any particular type I need to try if I see some Girl Scouts? Also, Girl Scout cookie general.

Toaster ovens, /ck/. The one that I have is old and nasty, as I inherited it from the last person who lived here. The actual oven is a gas oven and is horribly inefficient, and the gas bill is $900 to refill it so I rarely ever use it. Maybe once a year, if that. So, it's time for a new toaster oven. I'd like a big one. Right now, my current one has a width of 13". You would assume this would mean I could fit in a 9x13 dish, however that's wrong, because most dishes have little handles at the end of them. I'm not looking for anything mega-duty industrial-sized, just something slightly bigger than what I currently have. My toaster oven sits on a type of cart, I have 22" inches of length to work with and the width doesn't really matter. Can /ck/ give any good toaster oven recommendations? I'm not too picky when it comes to looks, it just has to adhere to that size so I can fit it in the same place. I would really like to get the following one: http://www.amazon.com/S1800-Capacity-Countertop-Convection-Interior/dp/B00CCSOT96/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1397116576 BUT, the dimensions listed are for the interior. I think with the panel included, it will be too big to sit in my designated area. Also, that one caps out at 450F degrees, I could live with that, but I would prefer if it could reach 500F for when I bake bread. What do I do, /ck/? tl;dr - need a big toaster oven that can fit on a 22" length cart. I am prepared to order this tonight.

What is your favorite things to add to Japanese style curry? Vegtables, extra seasonings, etc. I was planning on adding some kale I have left over. Think that will get too limp if I add it at the end?

I see picky eater threads on /ck/, how about a picky drinker thread? >I don't like gin/rum/tequila/rye/bourbon/brandy because [boring story about something irresponsible I did 20 years ago] >I don't like beer that isn't [extremely specific brand/style] because [I'm an intolerable fucking faggot] >I don't like wine because [various amazingly stupid reasons] >I'm going to make stupid faces and loud gagging noises and insult the host because I somehow assume people care more about my self-inflicted disability than about enjoying a good drink If you can only enjoy one kind of flavor, you obviously don't enjoy alcohol. No one is forcing you, why do you have to inflict your bullshit on the rest of us?

Has anyone here tried using fiber supplements in cooking? I have a tub of this stuff and was thinking of dumping it into some brownies just for the heck of it. It's water soluble and completely flavorless and rather texture-less when dissolved. Not sure how it'd turn out cooked.
