Startups and small business general

Startups and small business... 132 posts and 11 image replies omitted. Click to view.
How does one make an honest living in 2014 without working for someone else? Everywhere I look, I read horror stories about how it's impossible for small businesses to compete with XYZ Corp's highly efficient mass production apparatus in China, that 90% of startups fail, that it's just a bad idea, etc. What does it take to actually start a small business and earn enough to survive? A few obvious things I can think of: - Having tangible skills with economic value that most people don't - Being a god with computers including in topics like databases, digital modeling, web design, and social media marketing depending on the application - Being good with people and super organized in general - being on top of phone calls, emails, appointments, etc. - Having enough capital, perhaps even enough to not require a loan Apart from this, I'm a little bit clueless as to how successful startups get off the ground with no experience or reputation to build on.

RC Plane 220lb Payload

RC Plane 220lb Payload 76 posts and 12 image replies omitted. Click to view.
What i am trying to make here is an RC plane that can have a 220lb payload but, google had not turned anything up. $1000 is what i'm looking to spend to accomplish this. Why do i need a 220lb payload? I plan to carry gear and other supplies to see if a concept can lead to an idea with this one. Like practical uses for small distance package transport. I have some experience with flying an RC plane but, not experience building one at all. What do i need to do this /diy/? Any frame recommendations and help is appreciated.
