In my country blackouts are almost a daily occurrence. Some of them can last up to 2 hours. I bought a 500W UPS for my computer and it just sits beside my computer with a 200ah battery. When I bought it I thought I would only be using it for the computer so no need to wire it, then one night during a blackout I hacked a suicide cable (pic related) to run the lights. It is inconvenient to turn off the mains every time I have to power something and after almost having an accident I think its time to throw away the cable and wire this properly. The easiest way to wire it would be to install it below the circuit breaker so my entire room is powered but this is impractical as the UPS would blow up if the blackout occurs when I was using the vacuum cleaner or if I had everything else on simultaneously (computer, speakers, fan, lights, tv). Another problem I face is that I don't want to move it away from the computer. When connected through the USB port I am given all the information on my screen (input/output voltages, battery levels/percentages). This is just too complicated for me. I called up an electrician and he was stumped after finding out that I wanted to move the battery out, leave the UPS beside my computer, have a selector switch through which 1 outlet (computer) is powered 100% of the time through the UPS while the others run through the mains but I have to have the option to turn the mains and put them on the UPS. Damn, this is too confusing :/

Was quoted an extra 100+ dollars extra for 8mm glass compared to 6mm, for an aquarium. The overall dimensions of it are 1200x500x450 which will hold about 270 liters (71 gallons) of water. This site: http://www.theaquatools.com/building-your-aquarium says it'll be ok but i want to check with other people.

I have an arduino project I would now like to move to a circuit board and to make permanent. It's a box with a keypad that upon entering the correct code, moves the position of the motor inside the box and allows the person to open it. A security box, I guess. I was just wondering, do I need the 16Mhz crystal on the circuit board as well/any other components from the arduino itself apart from the ATMega328 or can the project be moved to the circuit board with the ATMega alone along with my components used in correspondence to the project?

Need some circuit help, /diy/. I'm making a small electromagnetic pulse generator. The picture is my circuit. The metal wires are some radioshack wires that hang off of the battery holders. I soldered the copper wires together. I used an 8-inch iron core, 1 inch diameter hollow (Thin, don't know thickness). I wrapped around a 25 ft, 6 gauge (or 4) non-insulated copper wire around the tube twice. Once up and the other down so at one end a few inches of both sides stick out. The (snap-in, does this matter?) supercapacitor is giving me a reading of .5-.7 volts, from the 0 I started with. It doesn't seem to want to discharge. I'm guessing that the prong with circles on it is the negative since it gives me a positive reading when I put neg to neg and pos to pos, but vice versa is a negative reading. I'm completely knew to this, I'm sure I made a mistake somewhere.

Okay guys. My boss is letting me modify my desk so I can stand. I can't raise the desk. I can only put something on top of it like a little table for my monitor and keyboard, etc. Any ideas?

Buying a house in Ohio ($130k) to live, flip, and sell within 5 years (give or take) Oil heated, no natural gas access. I've never dealt with oil heating in a house. All I know is it's expensive as fuck. Should I keep it?

Need some expert's help in checking/modifying the codes below so they work. For now even ball hits the balloons, the balloons won't pop. function scene:createScene(event) local group = self.view local balloon = display.newImage ('balloon_fat_red.png', 495, 125) group:insert(balloon) balloon = display.newImage ('balloon_fat_red.png', 495, 175) group:insert(balloon) balloon = display.newImage ('balloon_fat_red.png', 495, 225) group:insert(balloon) local balloonText1 = display.newText('\227\129\130', 495, 125) balloonText1:setFillColor( 1,1, 0 ) local balloonText2 = display.newText('\227\129\132', 495, 170) balloonText2:setFillColor( 1,1, 0 ) local balloonText3 = display.newText('\227\129\134', 495, 225) balloonText3:setFillColor( 1,1, 0 ) balloon.name = 'balloon' physics.addBody(balloon) balloon.bodyType = 'static' table.insert(balloons, balloon) group:insert(balloonText1) group:insert(balloonText2) group:insert(balloonText3) function ballCollision(e) if (e.other.name == 'balloon') then scene.updateScore() e.target:removeSelf() print ('remove balloon text') e.other:removeSelf() audio.play(pop) end end function cannonCharge:touch(e) if(e.phase == 'began') then impulse = 0 cannon.isVisible = true Runtime:addEventListener('enterFrame', charge) end end function charge() local degreesPerFrame = 0.5 cannon.rotation = cannon.rotation - degreesPerFrame impulse=impulse-0.2 if(cannon.rotation < -46) then cannon.rotation = -46 impulse = -3.2 end end

My friend of many years is going off in summer to work in Europe (we live in America). Ever since we were in high school we always used to drink at a really foresty woodland deep inside a park trail. As we got older more teenagers came to that spot, but we always felt that we were the forerunners of it. He's leaving and we're throwing one last party for him. My other friends and I pooled together about 500 for everything with 365 of it going to drinks and what not. I'd say the area of this spot is about 20 meters by 15 meters. Since we'll have some money left over are there any cheap ways to make the outdoor place more comfortable from bugs and the elements? I wanna give him a good party

Hello guys! I have a friend of mine who is a total Portal 2 fan, so I decided to make her a companion cube that plays music when you press a button and makes the cube light up. The basic idea is to use papier-mâché or styrofoam for the cube and the casing itself. I plan on making one of the sides or the hearts pressable. Once you do that, it should play the Portal 2 companion cube song and the hearts and the smaller lines should light up like in the picture. I have a good idea on how to built the cube, but I don't really have a clue about electronics, so I need help with that. I already googled around a little bit to find some help with the music playing and someone mentioned, that you could use a cheap mp3 player, upload the song to it and take the electronics out of the casing and put them inside and connect a small speaker to it. The problem is, that the mp3 would need to get turned on and the song would need to be played as well. Since I have no clue about electronics I have no idea how to get this to work. If I use an mp3 player I would also place the usb port of the player on one of the sides, so she would be able to recharge the batteries of the thing. I would really appreciate your help and I am also open for other ideas.
