So I just moved into a new house and I want to decorate my room a bit different than it usually is. My basic goal is to have a very minimalist design. I also have a couple interesting ideas for lighting.(there is currently no permanent lighting in the room) I want to create a feel similar to that of a James Turrell exibit.>pic related I'm planning on using some sort of fabric as a back drop along the extents of a single wall in my bedroom, then I will construct a frame around the border of the wall that will house led lights (rope lights?). the lights will shine on the fabric and reflect into the rest of the room. It would be cool if I could get a multi color system going that slowly changes as time passes. I'm also planning on making another light feature that consist of framing along the ceiling (much like crown molding) that will house similar lights. the frame will have a translucent material stretched around it in order to diffuse the light, again, probably using led rope lights or christmas lights. If anyone has done anything like this I would appreciate any advice. I'm shooting for the end product of my room to be my mattress on the floor, a small table next to it and the lighting system.

anyone got some experience with upholstry ? I want to refurbish an old couch. the problem is , I don't know what to put in the pillows. it gets ridiculouslyexpensive if I use only Foam and I don't think it's that cool to sink into 10 cm of foam. the picture shows my plan. would this work? how could I improve it or how would you do it ?

Hey guys, I'm looking for some advice. I want to make a bunch of pic related (maybe about 100?) The design is pretty simple, but I have no experience with metalwork. I'm thinking of making it out of something like brass or aluminum (might prototype by cutting up a soda can), cut it out, fold it over and attach it using locktite or something. If I was one offing, I'd just get shears and bang it out, but I want to make a bunch, so I'd like to use a more efficient process. If I get a machinist to help me, is there any way I can make a "cookie cutter" die, which I'd just place over the sheet metal, and reasonably expect to be able to cut out the pattern? After that, is it very hard to shape the thing? I hope I can just make two or three dies, one square and one rounded, and just basically hit it with a hammer, then clamp the sheet with locktite until it sets. Do you think this approach would work? Would I have any issues with deburring? Would it be cost effective to get a shop in china to stamp out the shapes instead? As always, thanks for the help

Hey /diy/, /tg/ here. I've got some old Warhammer 40,000 models that are sitting around. I'd like to finish off the army without investing too much money in it. I want to make some laser cut m113 lookalikes for them to ride around in, either MDF or polystyrene sheet. I have done next to no CAD before. Could any of you direct me to a good beginners guide to CAD for laser cutting? Finding good advice from google is a bit hit and miss.

I'm looking to buy solid modeling software. I have Alibre, but it sucks. I can't decide between SolidWorks and Inventor. They seem very similar, but I don't have experience with deep functionality.

Growing onions

Growing onions 8 posts and 1 image replies omitted. Click to view.
Alright /diy/, a few weeks ago i bought a 10kg sack of purple onions, like i always do when i'm out. We didn't eat all of them, and they started giving off sprouts. Since temperatures outside just started reliably staying above freezing, i decided to try and plant 8 of them. You know, just for the lulz. What i did was take a few cardboard boxes, about 30x20x40cm, filled them with soil halfway up, put the onions in the middle, then filled the rest. I planted one onion per box. The box thing is just a proof of concept really, i don't have an enclosure and having dogs i can't plant stuff just in the ground. They'd eat up everything in an instant. By using boxes, i can later move them to some raised structure to prevent the dogs from getting to the onions, or, if i do build an enclosure, bury the entire box in the ground and just let the paper rot. Do you think there's any chance these store-bought onions will actually grow into something useful, or do i really need to buy seeds as some people online says?

Anyone else deal with this horseshit? Everytime I go into a hardware store there is always some faggot who has to push into the conversation how I am wrong about something or they know how X is better etc. >Pop into Ace needing a 240 50amp plug since Home Depot doesn't have it. >Guy bout gives a nigga heart attack by jumping out and asking what I need. >Tell him I just need a 3 prong 240v plug. Don't know NEMA code since I am not someone who works with it all day err day. >He shows me to the place. Asks me what I am trying to do with it. >Yeah I got a very old Air Compressor I need to run at a guys house while I do some work and it uses an older 3 prong plug with no neutral. I just got this one to plug into the modern outlets since he has a Dryer plug I can use. I need a cord to run the extra distance I need and also to make it so that this old three prong can get the juice from the 4 prong receptacle since the 3 prongs don't work on 4 prongs. >Uhhh.... Yeah we got what you need but uh, running no neutral can cause problems and burn the house down! 240v extension cords are against code too. >Strange room initiate. Just tell him to give me the plug. Be on my merry ass way. >Be in Loewe's. >Got a frame that needs enclosing for a tumbler and motor I need to make. Time is essential, can't order it and steel yard is 2 hours away. >Ask the dude if he has any sheet metal or expanded metal in the place. >He shows me to it. Says he has 16 gauge 20 and 24 or 26 or something. >Grab a few sheets of this expensive ass 20 gauge cold rolled. >He asks what I am trying to do with it. >Tell him I just got to weld it to a metal box style frame. >He jumps out with his words and says you can't weld no 20gauge sonny. >isthisniggaserious.png >Tell him I could probably do it with 1/16 7018 but the Tig set up would easily knock out all the welding. >He gets all flustered and says there ain't no way anybody of your age (20) can have bought a tig welder. >Leave and weld it out.

Hey /diy/, We cleaned out some old stock at work, and since I hate throwing away perfectly fine garbage that looks like it has some diy potential, I brought some stuff home with me. Amongst it was this thingy with a vacuum tube, and I was wondering if any of you might know of something I could do with it? I know my way around basic tools, and love sciency stuff, if that helps. Something else I salvaged and that seems interesting is the polarizing layers from a laptop screen, so if you know something I can do with that, please share! On a sidenote, is there an easy way to make a spark, besides a bbq lighter? Thanks in advance!

Posting here and /fa/ since I'm not sure which board would be better for it. I want to paint/dye/whatever these shoes. What would I use to color them? Leather paint seems like it's more for hard leather than soft, but I don't know if suede dye is the way to go either.

Hey /diy/ is this repairable at all. My headset recently broke but thankfully it still functions but its becoming a nuisance to deal with as the adjuster will slide off with a slight motion.

The other night I watched this pbs nova documentary about these high-quality Viking swords that have been found. They're made of high quality crucible steel, and also 800 years older than any steel of the same quality in Europe. http://youtu.be/nXbLyVpWsVM Worth a look. This guy is an amazing craftsman. I have long wanted to get into this sort of forging, etc but I don't know where to begin. What does /diy/ think is a good way to get started. tl;dr How do I into smithing? Assume modest general skills and resources.

>fixing anything ever >replace old thing that has looked on the verge of breaking for ages >new thing less effective, needs to be replaced often >go back to using old thing, works to this day or alternately, >removing old thing broke it permanently >wallow in guilt anyone else have this experience? The duct-taped, asymmetric headphones I'm using now have outlived countless others, which have lost sound in one ear or developed sound channel problems.

Hoping electronics guys can help with nub question. Take one of these 12 volt 10 watt heaters, it will draw 833 milliamps right? does that mean a 12v battery with 1000mAh rating can supply one with power for approximately an hour? What would happen if i instead powered it with two nine volts in series?

Google has failed me, so I was wondering what you guys would do. my neighborhood has no curbing, and my front lawn always turns into a muddy mess out front where a curb should be. What would be the best way to solve this? add a curb with pavers, pour a concrete curb, etc I think framing a concrete curb would be a bitch and pavers would look half assed. just wondering what you guys would do
