Hey /diy/. Long time lurker here. I recently started to restore some old axe heads, and to my surprise, we had a grindstone? laying around here. Pic related. How would you go about getting it up and running? My father, an old outdoorsman and diy'er says it's best to have a crank-like handle on it to turn it, but also, how to hold it up for it to spin. More pics to come. Thanks in advance.

Hi, /diy/ I have a penknife that I got as a kid However it is too blunt to use, and I have no idea how to sharpen it. Can I use a random stone, or do I need actual knife sharpening equipment? Pic related, the knife

Anyone have any idea on how to make some sort of additional triggers for the ps vita? The back has a touchpad that is sectioned off into 4 parts that work as R2 and 3 and L2 and 3 Not sure what type of touchpad or what materials will interact with it but it's something I just thought of Was thinking of making something from scratch or modifying a store bought case

What have you recently finished, or done that you think is a personal achievement? >finally managed to figure out how to broadcast analog TV and FM radio through my house Pic doesn't do it justice since it's a 2 inch crt, but it works bretty gud. >Sony Watchman B&W portable analog TV featuring Finn and Jake. http://youtu.be/qQ-PNSfFCy8

I got these boots dirt cheap because they had defects. As you can see the leather is really rough looking. Is there any way I could make them look decent. They're super comfortable btw
If you could send a small care... 24 posts and 1 image replies omitted. Click to view.
If you could send a small care package to a god forsaken orphanage, what would you send? whatever you send would need to enhance their lives in some way. My thoughts are on providing tools for children to learn a semi-skilled industry trade or some level of education they otherwise wouldn't receive. I was thinking along the lines of sending craft tools like jewlery pliers for converting wire and beads into jewlery that could be sold at market and bartered for goods. what would /diy/ send?

Hey /diy/, some doofus broke the screws holding the string trees, and then tried to extract them with what I expect was a crowbar or a large animal. What's the best way to get these fuckers out with minimal impact on the wood?

Electronics question

Didn't see a sticky about no questions.... I am trying to build a simple circuit, a light trip sensor where when an IR/laser light is broken there is a simulated button press. sensor sees IR/laser light, circuit is open, no more IR/laser light, circuit closed.

Hey /diy/, How would I set up some wireless switch to turn on something like a light? As the picture depicts, a light in the garden, turned on by leaning out the window and hitting a button. Anyone know of a cool way to set this up? I'm guessing the distance I'd be looking at would be up to 30 meters or so?

CNC OKUMA LATHE

any okuma bros out there willing to share tips or tricks and whatnot? I run a crown and a captain. The cap has live tooling that ive kinda self taught myself the g&m coding for some basic mill drill ops. But id love to know more! I work at a job shop in ohio so i see anything from ultra sonic drill rig parts to aerospace and surfacing work, but my main area is the lathe, actually went to national skills usa comp. For programming a few years back. Only placed 6th in the nation though

I just made a breastplate out of some polyethylene plastic for my son, but it still looks pretty basic so far. I've tried making it prettier by engraving it with some tools I have, but honestly, it just ends up looking 'scratchy' instead, you know? What's a good way to make drawings/engravings/etches in the plastic?

Common small nut driver sixes in electronics? I'm talking smaller than 1/4"

Hey /diy/guys I have currently become interested in radio stations and finding out what it would take to begin broadcasting my own music locally around my campus and city. I have done a bit of reading, and what I am most concerned with is the equipment to get started. The bare basics. If anybody has any stories, resources, etc. I would love to see them. TL;DR What are the necessary pieces of equipment to broadcast over local radio waves

DIY laser cutter

DIY laser cutter 55 posts and 4 image replies omitted. Click to view.
Hey, I have figured out how to make a $150 laser cutter that can do 1/8" acrylic. I have just gotten the patent paperwork for it, but would like to open the design after I sell enough to recoup my development costs. I will not talk to Kickstarter again because they were exceptionally rude to me when I proposed something that Google deployed around six months later. What can I do?

I saw the joule thief LED... 12 posts and 5 image replies omitted. Click to view.
I saw the joule thief LED marker thread and I remembered I had an LED stripe from a broken laptop I couldn't lit, I replicated the circuit and from 2 AA batteries I get a decent glow. The stripe has 24 LEDs in 3 series of 8, at ~120mA each series and ~20V to lit them, what its about 1W of power. The toroid is my biggest worry, I have 20 windings at each side and a quite large toroid, do small toroids work better or worse? How much affect the number of turns? Any clues on how to optimize this circuit so it can work nicely with 2AA batteries? A neat way to include a potentiometer so I can regulate the light intensity? I already have a potentiometer to the base but when the value gets too low the toroid buzzes, I was thinking about 1k resistance (its optimal value) and then a potentiometer to increase the resistance and hence reduce the brightness. If I power the joule thief with a 5V 2W DC source what should I do to avoid burning the LED's, just a resistance before connecting it to the toroid? Sorry if I sound annoying, just started with electronics and I find toroids fascinating. Thanks for your time. >Pic-related it's how it glows connected to the 2AA
