Backup with tar

I'm trying to make a backup of my home directory to another disk drive with tar. I'm running this command from the home dir: tar -zcvf --preserve /media/user/disk/backuphome_2014-03-07.tar.gz . but all it does is to create a file "--preserve" in the current directory and complain about not finding the file "backuphome_2014-03-07.tar.gz". Any suggestions? Pic unrelated

Slim ATX cases

Hail, the proud people of /g/. I don't come here often but maybe you can help me out. I need to shove my current computer somewhere out of sight (eg. under my sofa) but the case is far too wide for it to fit there on it's side. The thing is that I'd like to keep using my current components, including motherboard and the graphics card (GTX670). Are there any narrow ATX cases you know of? The other dimensions don't really matter if it can fit under 16.5 cm (6.5 inches). Thanks!
