Hey /g/. All I hear about are thinkpads around here. Are there any other good laptops for $450 - $500 that would be good for programming and general use. Not planning to game. I've looked around a lot and it just seems like most laptops are shit. I would get an old thinkpad but buying used makes me nervous.

what brand of crt monitor can I buy that's least likely to be completely rekt? I used to have a gateway one that was new when I bought it, but I had to leave it behind in a move so now I'm looking for another one.

Tried to access my email but it was adamant that I needed to enter a phone number or a secondary email; I used a temp email as secondary and can now view my emails. What do email client do you recommend other than having my own server?

I just finished university, I got CSE degree, and I'm thinking between pursuing a career as a developer, or a sysadmin. I worked for a few months as a font end web developer, but I couldn't stand cutting & editing pictures, then making a site to look exactly like a psd file with pixel perfection, and all that bullshit. The only thing I liked about the job was writing js scripts. My biggest strengths are the ability to solve heavy logic problems, and come up with minimalistic perfect solutions in heavy situations. My weakest side is my slowness when I do repetitive work, or when I have to do something simple, I sometimes overthink it to make it perfect. I have managed a linux vps with some heavy load sites for several years, and I've also messed with some programming, but I don't have professional sysadmin or a developer experience, so what do you think I would fit better in? sysadmin or developer?

So I take it that these portable chargers are pretty much just 18650's connected together in a nice looking case. Am I correct? Is it worth me buying one of these Anker ones for like £35 (12000mAh) or buying a case from ebay with a bunch of batteries?

Personal Tech Support

My laptop has developed a fault. I want good Linux support, a good keyboard, a good trackpad (I've never used a nipple mouse, I don't know if I'd like it or not), and a good monitor (having said that, I've gotten by with 1366x768 for a long time). A good DAC would be nice too, muh headphones. The options I'm aware of follow. A macbook with a retina display almost tempts me away from my freedums, but the new design seems to be less repairable, the Linux support seems questionable, and the price is a little high. An old thinkpad is tempting, but I don't want to be using a device that a smelly neckbear has masturbated onto. On the offchance that I can find new old stock on Ebay: which models are worth looking at? I've heard mixed things about new Lenvo laptops, and they seem to make a gorrillion models. Their E series seem cheap, and are quite tempting. Have I missed any less well known options?

So I have this new 2160p monitor from Samsung. Just rebuilt-my rig with a fresh install of Mint 17 + MATE. Problem is that I can barely read a goddamned thing, even with the monitor at 1 foot from my face. Sure, I can jack up the fonts for each app (terminals, browsers,e tc.). But how to I tweak MATE for high DPI so universally everything is at a proper size (icons, scrollbars, titlebar fonts, etc.) If MATE isn't up to the challenge, I'm open to new DE environments. Unfortunately, my shit GFX 750 isn't quipped with DisplayPort, so I'm stuck at 30Hz for now, though it isn't a huge deal for desktop work (for me, anyway). Suggestions?

Tox thread. Cleansing edition stqism should have never joined the project using his dirty tactics. However, unfortunately, he did.
