So I've just finished Gardens of the Moon: Malazan Book of the Fallen, book 1. And right before finishing it, I bought volume 2. Now that I've started Volume 2, it seems as though it starts with a bit out in book 1. So my question is this: Did I just do a dumb-dumb, and fail to understand that Book 1 covers both Vol.1 and Vol.2?

What is Bukowski's best book of poetry released when he was still alive? What is the best place to start with David Foster Wallace? What is your favorite book of poetry, and why? Do you consider Bukowski and Vonnegut good writers? If not why, and who would you recommend to someone who likes reading those authors as something light? What is some good fiction written by philosophers? An example would be the Stranger by Camus, but obviously that is only my opinion.

Is there a reason the mod deleted the history thread? Is nothing sacred? Philosophy is a certain category that is posted on here constantly which just talks about key terms from philosophy books and subsequently discusses them, maybe occasionally referencing a book. In that history thread, multiple books were already referenced by the time the modes deleted it. And what great, intelligent discussion as well.

Why is this book getting so much attention, /lit/? The main character is a walking cliche, no original thoughts of which to speak. She's just an angry, socially awkward, "badass" chick with a bow, who knows martial arts and solves most of her problems by hitting them. In a guy, that would be so boring as to be insulting. In a girl...why do I get the feeling that I've seen this a hundred times before? The love interest is introduced in chapter one as a "hot" guy who makes the main character swoon. I thought this was a joke when I read it, a romantic false lead similar to Frozen; I was wrong. The author doesn't even know to avoid contractions when speaking in an authorial voice, and handles dialogue tags with all the skill of Stephanie Myers. In spite of all its problems, and its cookie-cutter characterization, it still has 4.5/5 stars on Amazon...what? Honestly, I'm upset at how much attention this series is getting. Turned on my Kindle, saw an ad for it on the splash screen, and I raged.

I've been reading the bible lately as a way to try to empathize with Christians, especially because a lot of my family is Christian. However, I've realized that many Christians go entirely against what the preach, and many of them are batshit insane conspiracy theorists. Does anybody know why this is?

I'm wondering, is there anything resembling Magical Girls in old Fairy/Folk Tales? I'm writing a book that's basically Fairy Tales with Magical Girls, and Magical Girl shows always seem to have a thing for Fairy Tales. Aside from some early examples trying to capitalise on the popularity of Bewitched, It seems like the whole magical girl thing is very influenced by fairy tales, with the whole magical transformation trope etc. and examples of magic wielding princesses being common throughout the likes of 1001 Nights. It doesn't have to be a direct proxy but... anything from Folktales or Literary Fairytales that involves magical female warriors that pref. transform somehow... are there any examples of this?

Sup, /lit/terbugs! I'm kindof new around here, (mostly an inhabitant of /tg/, for worldbuilding). I'm working on an essay for my Native American Literature class, and I'm working on comparing native 'task heroes' (Kwaku Anansi, the Marooned Hero) with those from other cultures (Moses, Herakles), and I was hoping I could use you guys as a kind of hivemind advisor, and soundboard, asking questions as I go along. Does that sound okay? I'll post images as an offering to the Great Anon, of course, with every question. First one: I'm looking to describe folklore as a single object, somehow. Like this: "The (folklore) of the Southeast Native Americans is a unique one." Is there something I can put in the parenthesis to make it...idunno, better?
