How do you deal with not subscribing fully to any political philosophy, /lit/? I have a set of beliefs that takes elements from many other major political philosophies, but doesn't take any of them whole-sale. I've taken to calling myself a "Moderate Capitalist with Socialist Portions," but that doesn't really describe it and tends to start really stupid arguments. The fact that I hope the government moves to a completely dissimilar system as technology advances (to something I tentatively call "Automaton-Communism") doesn't help at all. I don't want to sound like a pretentious douchebag, but making up terms for myself makes me seem like that. I would refer to myself as a "Freethinker," but that has all sorts of connotations I do not desire. Does anybody else have this problem? How do you handle it?

I read this book last summer and it is now among my favorites. Has anyone read this and if so do you have any suggestions on what else I might enjoy?

So apparently Taipei is (semi?-)autobiographical... Did Tao Lin ever actually post on 4chan asking for drug hookups? Did he actually go to all those readings on all those drugs? Are there videos? All the videos I see of him at readings he just looks awkward, not at all like someone peaking on ecstasy.

What does /lit/ think about Common Core and English education in general? How will it influence the next generation of readers and writers? Will it help cultivate a more informed populace or more skillful authors? Or is it just a New Math of English? Here's an introduction to English Common Core: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmLElb7yHDU Here's a look at a first grade Common Core English textbook that deals with social advocacy, using emotional words to "get readers to feel so strongly about the the problem that they want to do what is being asked of them," and a rubric in a third grade textbook for "measuring growth and change of student behavior and attitude": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGph7QHzmo It's important to note that schools won't have to use those specific books under Common Core, but I'm not sure I can put up with another generation of emotional appeals. What do you think this will mean when these students become the next crop of authors?

Hey, /lit/. I'm reading "Anna Karenina," and I'm on page 186 right now, but my interest keeps waning whenever Vronsky's parts come up. I find every other character principle character more interesting than him, but I don't want to drop it since it's still early on. What are your thoughts on Vronsky? Do his parts become more interesting to read later on?

Is there a reason the mod deleted the history thread? Is nothing sacred? Philosophy is a certain category that is posted on here constantly which just talks about key terms from philosophy books and subsequently discusses them, maybe occasionally referencing a book. In that history thread, multiple books were already referenced by the time the modes deleted it. And what great, intelligent discussion as well.

I've been reading the bible lately as a way to try to empathize with Christians, especially because a lot of my family is Christian. However, I've realized that many Christians go entirely against what the preach, and many of them are batshit insane conspiracy theorists. Does anybody know why this is?

Noam "I think people ought to be in cages" Chomsky http://www.chomsky.info/interviews/199808--.htm http://www.paulbogdanor.com/200chomskylies.pdf Why do people listen to this authoritarian statist psychopath again? He's basically the gatekeeper of academia. He's the catholic church of today. His fucking salary is state funded once you follow the money, he does everything in his power to grant more power to the state, yet has the balls to call himself an "anarchist". Cute. He's supported some of the most vicious, authoritarian regimes known to man, while hypocritically criticized american foreign policy(which is bad of course, but makes the man a giant hypocrite) The only people who look up to this idiot are clueless college kids who get forcefed leftist propaganda and believe everything their professors tell them.
