Buying a bike

So, I've decided to give up my car. I need to ride 6 miles (back and forth) each day over questionable sidewalks and hills. I have a limit of 550 dollars to get the best bike possible. Do you guys have any suggestions? What type of bike should I look for? I plan to use this bike for at least 2 years.

HOW OLD IS THIS BIKE?

Hey /n/, I purchased a rebuilt bike from a local shop. The back wheel and chain were new, it's on a steel frame, and it has a nice patina to it (spray painted over). Front insignia says "Graco". Has a blue and red shield. Was just wondering if anyone could provide some info. Search engine doesn't give shit man. Will post pictures of bike and marijuana in return :) .

Why have you never cycled in Minneapolis, /n/? Were you not aware that Minneapolis is the best city on Earth for urban cycling? Did you not realize what you have been missing out on your whole life?

Do you get happy when it's pitch black and really fucking cold outside, but at least it isn't raining or snowing? Have you even climbed a mountain, only to turn back to descend and think "Oh boy, it's gonna get chilly now" Have you ever ridden your bike for two months without seeing another fellow cyclist on the road? Have you ever been struck by the feels while riding out there in the rain and cold? You're not alone! >Mountain biking >Road riding >Grocery getting >Commuting Join us! strava.com/clubs/forever-shinkansen Also, http://veloviewer.com won't be free anymore after this weekend. So take your last chance to play with your Strava data for free there. Brag about your Veloviewer score ITT.

>Got first job at 22 >Had to ride a few miles to work because don't want one/getting a drivers incense/car isn't a realistic option >rear hub on my piece of shit roadmaster collapses >I ACTUALLY PAY A LBS FOR A NEW REAR WHEEL OR WHAT THE FUCK EVER >even tough they told me I should just get a bike from walmart for $80 >Chain breaks like, the next day >Now I have a ugly but slightly less shitty step-through frame huffy >Both were given to me by my friends parents >I get into road bikes because I like "the look" >By that I mean im going fucking bald and since i'll always have a helmet on maybe I can finally be happy with the way I look again, even for just a few hours a day. >eventually get a 201X windsor from Craigslist for $200 >It has a defective frame (two small cracks on the headtube) >I see this and get it away since it fits me well and I liked the color >I figure since i'm skinny as fuck and as long as I don't sprint on it or hit potholes, it'll be fine. >Don't commute on it that much. >Friend gets me some road shoes for my birthday >They're womens shoes but Idgaf because i liked them and I have narrow feet (pic related) >get some spdsl pedals/cleats >never use them because I feel like I need the rest of the "gear" to go with them >I start to use my windsor to get to my bosses other business because it's a bit further and so much easier than on my huffer puffer

I always get a huge headache after long hard-ish rides. usually anything over 40 miles i'll have a headache that lasts into the next day. If i take 3 naproxen it goes away but i'm actually wondering how to circumvent the entire headache all together. Is it a salt/sugar intake thing? I always drink enough water and carry food with me.

Flight Size of Wut?

Aviation question for you /n/. A while back I was watching this show about UFOs and a Japanese 747 encountering multiple craft near Alaska. When conversing with ATC, the people at the control center were talking to the people watching the radar at Elmendorf who confirmed the jet was being followed with the dialogue "confirmed flight size of two." My question is this: Is the term "flight size of two" an umbrella term used to describe more than one contact in one spot on a radar monitor, or do they count upward for multiple aircraft, like five craft would be "flight size of five?" Can you clarify? Google sucks the balls right now.

Hey /n/, got a really nice (imo) Avanti Super Sprint from a friend that I want to restore back to it's former glory. Would use as a spare bike for short trips and to let friends borrow so we could go for rides. One big problem though, when shifting gears one time the rear derailleur snapped and took some spokes with it. Not too fussed about those because I can replace them easily, but it also bent the rear hanger a bit. The LBS told me that bending it back would result in questionable integrity, but I've been reading online that bending a hanger back on a steel frame isn't a big issue. He also recommended converting it to single speed. opinions? ideally someone with more experience will be able to confirm if bending the hanger back is ok

Hi /n/, sprinter here! Anyone ever get sprinting PTSD? Sometimes I randomly get an adrenaline rush and my legs twitch and my body gets ready to go hard in the paint. It happens randomly when I'm off my bike. Anyone know what this is?

chainring cassette compatability

So my commuter bike got partially hosed last week. It was a 10x3 shimano drivetrain with prifters. The rear lever got fucked, and a replacement is super expensive. I do have my older bike for parts harvesting, but it has an 8speed brifter. I know i can put the 8 speed cassette onto the 10 speed hub, and the 10 speed derailleur should work on an 8 speed cassette, but I'm wondering about compatibility on the original "10 speed" triple and derailleur. Will the 8 speed chain function on the 10 speed triple chainring with a 10 speed front derailleur?

I'm trying to get back into cycling and I've got some money now. I never invested much into my bike or cycling clothes or anything even though I rode enough to warrant it. Would it be a better, more cost effective idea to just build up a second bike little by little instead of dropping money on a complete bike. I was thinking I could just add the components to my old bike until I lastly buy a frame and put the second one all together. Pic related my old sturdy and reliable
