Is there any developed first world capital city that still uses signalmen on its' commuter rail network besides where I live? I thought their day was long gone. A thing you see only around museums and historical outings for ambience's sake these days. Caught the train to the CBD for the first time today since I was a child and was surprised to see them still kicking about the city's central station. Obviously back when I was a kid they were all that was available Then again, we still don't have electrification yet on our urban commuter lines so it would not surprise me if we really are the only civilised city still using traditional signalmen to wave trains out of the station.

Australian authorities have claimed they have found missing pieces of the doomed Malaysian 777 via satellite in the Southern Indian Ocean. Continue inane theories in light of these new developments.

Hello I have an actual transportation question here regarding strictly city riding on a single speed. Riding 14 miles each way to work through 90% city block to block. Google maps estimates it at 1hr19min I have never been into anything other than BMX even though i worked at a Trek certified bicycle dealer for 4 years. Possible to get it down to 45-50 minutes? Bike is a older Raleigh single speed Pic related

I heard that screen doors can't be installed on most NYC subway stations because different rolling stocks have doors at different positions. Why did they not standardize rolling stock design?

I would ride buses more often if they weren't always full of niggers.

I have a theory to the disappearance & location of MH370. In fact, it was one of many that was in my mind after a couple of days of searching. One of them is still in play. It also ties in with all known public facts to the aircraft. How would someone go about exchanging this theory for cash?

Book suggestions for a beginner

I'm an absolute beginner in the world of bicycles, but I want to plan a bike tour for summer 2015. Between now and then, I need to become a semi-expert on bicycles so I don't fuck up the trip in stupid ways. Going through internet forums and links is all well and good, but it can feel a little scattered and unfocused sometimes. So does anybody have suggestions for books about >bicycle construction and materials, maintenance, repairs, etc. I want to have a comprehensive and critical understanding of how bicycles work. >bicycle touring I've already bookmarked some location-specific tour accounts, but maybe something more instructional? >cycling fitness I know it's usually as simple as "just cycle more," but I'd still read something about cycling fitness. Maybe books about gym-centered training? for the winter months. And any favourites you may have. I plan on inhaling books about cycling until I go on tour. Also - how did you guys learn to fix your bicycles? Are there still things that can only be fixed in a bike shop, or can I be fully self-sufficient as long as I have the right tools and parts?

Now that we have finally discovered that the "cost-effective" but highly deadly twin engine Boeing 777 is not as immortal as they say, we should probably go back and have four engine plane as our normal planes. >four engined planes >consumes more fuel but lesser accidents >faster than twin engined planes >more reliable in case an engine goes bad >highly chosen by more passengers

Im thinking about buying my first real pair of cycling shoes. I've been looking at the Sidi Eagle 5-fit. My question is what size should I order in? I'm a 10 should I buy 43.5 or 44? Do they fit true to size? Should i go to my LBS and try on a pair of sidis? Tl;Dr: What size sidis should I get if I'm a size 10?

I'm pretty fit. I ride my bike and climb stairs 25 hours a week for work, delivering mail. I own an '80's steel road bike with 2x7 gears in good condition. Never done a longer tour before. Would it be realistic to ride 150 miles in a day over a low mountain range with a 1300 ft climb at the beginning, on good roads and bike paths? Also, general long distance touring advice thread.

Hey /n/ I have a vintage Montgomery Ward's Hawthorne men's bike that I bought at a yard sale for like $20 a few years back and was wondering how much it is worth? Tires hold air and you can ride it but the generator light doesn't work and it could probably use a good tuneup, what do you think? Pic related.
