High altitude climbing and brain damage. Shit, since I was just a little kid all i've ever dreamed of was climbing big mountains. I'm 19 now, and I've been training for it since I can remember. I've got plenty of skills, alpine climbing, ice/mixed, trad, experience in Alaska, I'm going to patagonia for 42 days. I have always planned to spend my life Climbing the biggest and best mountains I can, and now I learn i'll be sacrificing severe brain damage. Fuck. I feel broken and defeated. I have no problem accepting the objective risks of sudden death, I have in the past and will again...but something about certain brain damage. I'm not just a climber, I have a job that required me to be at the top of my mental game, I love to read, I have a masters degree, I care a lot about my brain. I feel like this is the worst news I have ever gotten. I don't know what to think.

i recently got a relly cool hunting knife from a local sports store and was wondering where some good places to hunt elk and maybe some bears in arizona are? I know there are risks but i figured that since the knife was basicly made for hunting i should be fine. its really sharp. Does any1 else here use hunting knives?

Hey guys I want to get into fly fishing but I have only done salt water fishing during my life and I am kinda a loner and my dad or anyone I know ever taught me shit about fishing (basically i need a general run down). Fly fishing seems extremely complicated compared to saltwater and I am just curious of your guys advice on beginning. For example: why are there so many different lures? I am in North Virginia fyi. Thanks for anyone who responds, I just wanna do it right the first time when I go out..

Does anyone have experience with hiking in Michigan? Specifically looking for the Norther LP, but anywhere in the state is fine. Honestly I've had more strange experiences hiking/camping/whatever here than anywhere else. Just . . . an odd state.

Commercial Diving

Hello /out/, I'm not entirely sure if this is the correct board to post on but I trust you'll be able to steer me in the right direction regardless. I am considering going to school for commercial diving. I see that the pay is amazing, and it looks exciting and challenging. The only problem is that I've never done any sort of scuba diving. I owned a pool for the vast majority of my childhood and remember staying underwater and turning upwards with my back to the ground and looking up at the surface. I enjoyed the quiet and the buoyancy. Other than that, I basically only have your average person's swimming experience, no actual swimming lessons, just plenty of hours in the pool. I admit recently I haven't swam much at all, but its not like I'd forget how. My questions are: Does anyone here have experience with scuba diving and can offer their advice? Has anyone done commercial diving and can offer their advice? How can one tell if scuba diving is for them? Will I be able to tell from the first time I try it? Thanks in advance.

Hey /out/. I've been thinking about picking up a crossbow. Could anyone recommend something? Preferably around £100. I'm not looking for anything too complex. Also I'm in the UK so i couldn't legally hunt with it. http://www.ukfishingandcamping.com/120lb-recurve-crossbow.html Something I was looking at, not sure of the quality though.

So I got a bobcat's paw (front) after doing necropsies on bobcats with the local DNR. I was wondering if anyone knows the best way to preserve it, kinds like a rabbits foot (only without the keychain). The guides I've seen for rabbits fur soak them in 75% alcohol for 48 hrs then wash them with washing detergent. They then wash them again with borax/water and set them out to dry. Anyone know if this will work for the bobcat pay as well? pic unrelated

Hey, for my grad trip we're going to an outpost in the mountains in Costa Rica. There will be several night hikes and the only light will be from the stars/moon and any flashlights we bring. I have no clue what kind I should buy and bring seeing as I have never done anything like this. Does anyone have advice on what light I should buy (preferably around $50 Canadian)?

H/out/ty, I'm looking for boot advice, I bought a pair of vasque sundowners about 6-8 years ago and the leather tore down the back. I wish I had bought them before they moved to china and thinned down the material. I'm looking for a new boot like above, minimal stitching, full leather, gore-tex, non-insulated, and a great tread. I've been looking at red wings, but I find myself lost when it's all designer shit. I'm a utility kind of guy, not something that needs to dress up to feel confident, I need to feel comfortable. Any leads you can give me /out/ Most apreciated.

Does /out/ have any experience being homeless, specifically in the California area? Slab City also being of interest. I ask this for obvious reasons. I have a bit of experience with living in the field from past occupations but I'm curious as to what the people here can tell me from their own experience.

I need your help /out/. I'm currently in a position where I can no longer live around anyone else. I'm not going to explain why, because that's none of your business. But I need help figuring out what to take on my journey into the woods. I'm going to be gone for a long duration of time, hopefully 5 years. What should I take? I gotta go light. I'm in a hurry. I have a tool shed that I can dip into and take what I need, but what do I need?

I didn't want to make a thread just for this but it doesn't look like there's an appropriate thread at the moment. I got a Zippo lighter for tripping and I'm kind of disappointed. This thing leaks like mad and is unreliable as a result. I tried ranger bands but they didn't do much. Any advice? Should I use an alternative? Just stick with matches?
