Insects 23 posts and 4 image replies omitted. Click to view.
I looked through the catalog and couldn't find anything on this. With Spring / Summer approaching for the Northern Hemisphere, I wanted to know what /out/'s take on insects was and keeping yourself safe from being abused by them. Encountering insects is one thing, but getting really hounded by them is another. I live in a pretty swampy part of Georgia near the GA / FL border, so go figure there are hordes of mosquitoes and similar flyers here. Aside from slathering yourself in DEET, what do you suggest? Pic related. Ticks and Chiggers just makes you feel amazing knowing that something is lodged in your skin, eating you.

Hey guys. Basically I'll be doing a bit of rough backpacking soon (hitchhiking, camping etc) and trying to get together the ideal travel stove but I'm not sure about my options. I found what looks like a little fondue cooker thingy (in the middle) in some abandoned ski resort. I haven't tried to use it yet, but I'm thinking it runs off alcohol or something. Which is funny because it has 'NO alcohol' in 3 different languages on it. the top spins around to pen and close the small holes while the big hole remains open. I managed to get two of these aluminium pan things (on the right) for dirt cheap and I'm wondering how i can incorporate these. they are bit large in comparison but super portable. i would need to suspend it somehow (make a tripod?), but would my other little cooker thing be too small? how about trying to make another alcohol stove all together? my wallets there for comparison of size, would love to know of any ideas people have. Thanks!

So /out/, is this man a fake or what? He's appears awfully plump and healthy for someone claiming to have been castaway in the pacific ocean for thirteen months. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2554434/So-castaway-cannibal-The-shocking-rumours-surrounding-disappearance-fishermans-companion.html

I need your help /out/. I'm currently in a position where I can no longer live around anyone else. I'm not going to explain why, because that's none of your business. But I need help figuring out what to take on my journey into the woods. I'm going to be gone for a long duration of time, hopefully 5 years. What should I take? I gotta go light. I'm in a hurry. I have a tool shed that I can dip into and take what I need, but what do I need?

Scuba diving with asthma

Scuba diving with asthma 3 posts and 0 image replies omitted. Click to view.
Any divers out there? I had bad asthma when I was a kid but it seems to be more or less in remission. Im now 24 and dont rely on medication. However sometimes in winter I need to use it. Im in the Navy and I;ve always wanted to become a diver. Not special forces but just a basic ships diver. I'll only dive to 18 metres and conduct basic underwater tasks like scraping rust of the hull. The medics know I has asthma however Ive convinced the, that I haven't used my meds in 5 years and docs said that if I can pass a bronchial provocation test then I can dive. I passed this years ago by taking heaps of meds before I went in. I know heaps of people who are currently asthamtics that dive without a problem. But still.

I'm applying to every farming apprenticeship I can find in British Columbia Canada. I can't believe I never heard of this before. The opportunity to live on a farm and learn about planting, harvesting and animal husbandry for fre room and board with an extra $500 per month beats the hell out of working as a cashier. Does anybody on out have any experience with this sort of a program? Ideally I'll become competent enough to travel the world as a skilled farm hand/carpenter, but maybe that's a pipe dream.

Oil 11 posts and 1 image replies omitted. Click to view.
What does /out/ know about oil? I'm thinking about buying some property near me but the owner wants to retain mineral rights. My stepdad tells me this is common. I know for certain that oil was found about half an hour away. There's a creek adjacent to the back border of the property. Does this mean I probably don't have to worry about oil under the land?
