ITT: Colorado; open discussion but to start... I'm heading to Colorado/Utah in late Jun/early July. Have a car rented for two weeks. I'm a pretty experienced backpacker; did NH on the AT in two week and a half sections, and have separately hit about 20 of the NH/ME peaks. Questions about backwoods: >If you truly stick to clean camp procedure (cooking away from camp; changing cothes; hanging food a good distance away on a high out-branch; etc), can I pretty much expect to be good to go as I would in the Northeast? >Camping above treeline - is that a no go for lightening/weather reasons or can I try it? Or just talk about nice spots. Will post a of couple of my last and only trip to Molas Pass. Stayed at various quiet campsites but didn't overnight in the woods.

What's your preferred hook removal tool / method? I used to have a pair of pliers like the ones in the picture, and they worked great until I lost them. I never replaced them since regular needle nose pliers do fine, but was wondering what you do? Any preferred styles of pliers? Other hook removal tools? I've seen a few tools that look better than pliers but haven't gotten around to trying them. Pics would be appreciated.

Hey /out/ I've been at in the river behind my house the past couple days digging up dirt and looking for gemstones. Just something to kind of keep my mind off shit. I wasn't expecting to find anything, when BAM. I started finding shit. Problem is, I have no idea what the fuck these rocks are. Hoping someone has some kind of idea. I know this isn't the greatest quality image, but its what i have, so see if you can work with it.

Posted in /trv/ before being redirected here. Need some help with sleeping bag. I have a shitty cheap one but I'll be camping in Norway end of April through May so I probably want something that can withstand at least freezing temperatures. I'm the kind of guy whose feet gush like a river in these human hot pockets so part of me wants to stay on the cheap side. Since I'll also be using the sleeping bag in warmer temperatures (up to late spring/summer) what would your advice be? Comfort temperatures down to -5C? Or will I then be too warm a few months later? What's the best compromise here?

A little old lady walked up to me with this thing at church Sunday (no kidding) and said she found it cleaning up a closet and she thought it was for camping. She asked me if I wanted it. Yes, ma'am, that's for camping and I'd love it.

Kathmandu general, personal experience? Are their "ridiculous sales" ever worth it? I just purchased last seasons calvus gortex jacket, kathmandu rrp 500 aud for 170 aud, online reviews are leading me to believe that their gear is NEVER worth it, should I return it and get my pennys back?

Hey /out/, I need some advice. I have a shit bow that I have gotten pretty good with. I want to step up my game, but don't want to spend much more then $200 for a new recurve or longbow. Do you have any suggestions as to what I should get? Pic is OMP Smokey Mountain Hunter. As of now, thats what I am leaning towards.

Hey, /out/. My father swore by campaign hats for hiking trips, his father swore the same, and his father's father swore by the campaign hat he kept when he left the army way back when. I'd like to carry on the tradition, but I'm concerned that hiking with one on would cause confusion and possibly trouble for me, especially in national parks. Can I have some advice on this?

Hey /out/, in a few weeks im going up to colorado to visit my uncle. He is an avid hiker, mountain climber, and camper and i know hes going to take me out into the woods for a few days. Now i have no experience with being out in nature besides spending the night in the woods with friends when i was growing up. Do you have any tips on how to not look like an idiot while im camping out with him?

I got a question. Last year me and my buddy went camping. A squirrel kept coming and trying to steal our food. So we made spears and through rocks at them. We injured one we think breaking its leg. This year were bringing a pellet gun. Question is. are we sick people?

Quick question /out/. I live in central Texas, the hill region, and with spring coming around the region is fraught with violent boar. Hiking in the hills is my passion, but I'm unsure of what I need to defend myself properly. Do I bring my AK, for dealing with large aggressive groups, or just a small little CC, for making hiking easier? I've only ever dealt with boar from a safe distance but while jogging the trails I've noticed lots of signs of rutting and them tearing up the trees lately. Any personal stories or recommendations?
