Camping?

Camping? 3 posts and 1 image replies omitted. Click to view.
I want to go camping for the first time ever around the NYC area. Anyone have any suggestions about where to go? Trying to go to a place for 4th of July, so a lot of areas that need reservations are most likely booked already.

Anyone else ever used something like this out of excitement or....urge to explain intricacy of plans? Like so excited that you have to document it, but knowing that no-one else would care about your adventure, you try to make it as entertaining as possible? Or am I the only guy who plans ahead for this shit?

Hey /out/ I went to /trv/ about this first and they said maybe I should ask you guys. I've been (very) slowly starting to plan a trip to Alaska next summer, but I'm kind of stuck about what I can and can't do. I'm a huge fan of camping and survival, and realy excited about trekking, backpacking and exploring the wilderness. Plus I've got this (childish) dream of exploring the Yukon and following in the first gold prospector's footsteps. I got the idea from hearing about the Seavey and the Iditarod, specificaly Dallas Seavey. My issue is, I've seen Into the Wild and a few survival shows about Alaska, and it looks tough. I don't want to underestimate mother nature in her rawest form, so I was wondering if it would actualy be possible to go trekking in Alaska without getting mauled or freezing to death. By the way, I consider Into the Wild a good example what not to do when preparing a trip in the wilderness... I'm from Switzerland, I've been on many hikes and a few camping trips, but I don't have huge amounts of experience when it comes to full on wilderness. Plus even though I've read up on them alot, we don't have bears here. I do know my basics though, like starting fires, setting up a camp, getting off the ground, planning for flash floods, hiding food etc. So my questions are the following: - Would it be possible to plan a trekking trip through Alaska's wilderness, or am I being dreamy? - If it is possible, which area should I be trekking in? I'd love to see the real wilderness if possible
How would climbing a mountain... 12 posts and 0 image replies omitted. Click to view.
How would climbing a mountain unprepared end up? Would it be McCandless level of disaster? Is it possible to climb mountains relatively unprepared with not much experience? Note I'm not talking about climbing to the top of Everest wearing only shorts and a windbreaker, but rather the lack of preparation and experience that doomed McCandless. Or is climbing a mountain different from long term living in the bush, because no one goes to climb a mountain and stay there, there's a goal in mind to get up and the off. To narrow the issues, I'm not talking about Appalachian tier mountains that don't have a tree line. I'm thinking Rockies, Andes, Himalayas, and alps.

What do you guys think about this Helikon shirt? I'm thinking about ordering one in camogrom (similar to multicam) for general innawoods purposes. http://helikon-tex.com/#!/Camo/CAMOGROM/BL-SFU-PR

My bike is a fixed gear. Do you think it could handle off-road adventures if I put the biggest tires that clear on it?

Hey /out/. I have a BA in Criminal Justice from Texas State University (I planned on being a police officer) but I have recently found that I could be a Game Warden in Washington. Before some guy tries to punk me and make me to be a fool, I don't know a lot about the outdoors or even Washington's outdoors, other than when I was a young boy and went camping with my family in the Smoky Mountains. Help me face reality, please. Am I romantacizing the outdoors or is it okay to be a noob and pick up? Any wardens have advice. Thanks in advance. Pic is a generally over-used pic of woods

Knife Thread

Just picked up this Mora knife today. Mec called it a "Frost River Knife" but i think it's the mora 440. Very sharp. It sliced through a full newspaper pretty easily and could shave the hair off my arm. Anybody have ideas for how to attach it to my PFD? I use the same one as pic related. The sheath has one hole at the end that I've circled in red.

>tfw I have I sit week after week alone during the weekends, day dreaming that I have friends to go /out/ with. I go /out/ alone sometimes but it would be much better with friends who are interested in the outdoors instead of partying and getting drunk all weekend

Not really sure where to put this thread but maybe here would be the best? I'm trying to plant some herbs and other plants to keep flies and mosquetoes away. They are driving me crazy and I thought this might help. Anyone have info about insect-repelling plants? Pic related.

Where are some places where I can really be alone in nature? I just wanna get away from my laptop, TV, away from society and be completely isolated. I'd like a cabin in the woods, or a boat to take out on the open ocean, but both of those are really out of the question.

I have a zippo, and its awesome, but i need another one. I want one with butane, one that has the strong blue flame. Im not sure which brand to get. Which brand is best? im not looking for something too expensive, i dont really have alot of money at this current time. Also something thats not too big, something that would be good for a EDC in a pocket with some other things. Which brand/ specific lighter is best?

Cycle Touring the United States

0 posts and 0 image replies omitted. Click to view.
Sup /out/, I have the strongest intent on doing pic related toward either the end of this year when my uni course finishes, or the beginning of next year. I'm an Australian so i would prefer to do this during the American summer, i intend to start another course next year but i want to go overseas, and i've always wanted to do this. How expensive would such a tour be in the US? It would be great to get some input from some American tourers or cycle tourers in general, thanks in advance
