Ok /out/ Can someone please tell me how dangerous it is to be hiking with lightning around? Seriously, what are the chances that you will be injured or killed by lightning while hiking in the mountains? I was hiking in the Eastern Sierras today, and a seasonal thunderstorm rolled in. People were turning back, others quitting halfway, even if it only lasts for 30 min. I understand that if struck, it is quite deadly, but it seems like it's blown out of proportion a little.

Hey /out/ Pretty new to this board but here I have pictured a road trip I will be taking from Southern California to Boulder, CO. Can anyone recommend spots along this route for hiking, sightseeing, or shooting? The grand canyon is obviously already on there. I will be passing through Flagstaff AZ as well if anyone knows something outdoorsy I can do around there. Thanks in advance!

Desert thread

I'm planning a road trip with my brother to drive around Utah and New Mexico. Gonna try to see some canyons and pueblos, camping most of the way with a few 1-2 night backpacking hikes. Looking for southwestern camping tips. Also, general desert/canyons thread. Specific questions: What's best for clothing? I'm thinking cotton is best for the heat. Long sleeves and pants to prevent sunburn. Plus some fleece or similar for cold nights. Any suggestions for pants or hats? How bad is the ground foliage around trails? Is pants-ripping and leg-cutting a concern? Worth wearing gaiters? I'll probably carry water in plastic gallon jugs, plus a filter for areas with springs. Open to suggestions for better containers. How much should I worry about rattlesnakes and other wildlife? Obviously I'm not gonna be trying to pick them up or something, but how closely should I watch the ground? Any good sources for maps, GPS coords, and trail info? A lot of it seems pretty hard to find, especially outside the big national parks. Google maps is surprisingly unhelpful, and I even spotted some mis-labeled roads. Any other desert camping and hiking tips are welcome. I mostly have experience in rainy temperate areas of the country.

Can /out/ help a hiking noob out? Me and some buddies are taking a month off this summer to hike the AT. All of us have grown up doing and loving outdoor activities but serious hiking isn't a big thing where we're from (southern Louisiana). ITT: basic supplies, gear recommendations, sight seeing, conditioning+prep, etc.

This is Sir Wankelmut a noble knight and hero of our wicked time. He is just starting his journey to get one of the most awesome asskicker in the world and you guys decide what he is doing next. Imagine this game as a sort of text adventure in which you can interact with the entire environment. Let your imagination spin wild around and post what he should do and where he should go. The suggestions will be put in action as good as possible and evidenced by pictures. Now, imagine!

/out/, what kind of camera(a) do you use? Do you ever put one on a helmet, or vest or something like that to record your activities? Or maybe in case some shit gets real? eg. A dude is coming at you because you accidentally camped on his property, or a bear is about to eat you and you want people to see how the Fallkniven F1 held up in the fight?
