Photobook thread? Does anyone here collect them? Which are your favorites? Just picked up Edward Weston 125 Photographs for $20 at Half-Price Books and I'm really loving it. I hadn't really ever looked at his work and was pretty much only familiar with his peppers, so I was excited to find so much good stuff in there. [EXIF data available. >taking 'the shot' >hey, did you 'take the shot' >i couldnt find 'the shot' Well fuck. Implying 'the shot' really exists. Unless we`re talking about the filthy shot of a celebs underskirt. >Implying there isnt always a better shot to be had. This term fucks with my brain already. >Implying that if someone takes 'the shot', the world is saved, champagne bottles are opened and fireworks will carry 'the shot' for many generations until a better shot is taken >implying 'the shot' means anything to anybody, except to that delusional photographer whos talking about the critical settings he has used to take 'the shot': "well uhmm the apertoire had to be f1.1, otherwise there wouldnt have been enough light to enter the lens and capture 'the shot'. You really have to use f1.1. Anything above that is for long exposures only. >implying anyone has actually seen 'the shot' >implying the one who has actually captured 'the shot', even knew that he had the shot And finally: what the fuck is 'the shot'? pic obviously not the shot [EXIF data available. >tl;dr: how do i shot lava Visiting Mt. Yasur tomorrow. I will be attempting to take some half decent pictures of the volcanic eruptions. Seeing as I have never photographed a volcano erupting before I am only sort of guessing about the best way to go about things. I will be doing a day trip and if I get clearance from John Frum's Cargo Cult a night shoot as well. They are carrying out some Kustom Taboo the same night I was planning on being up there to ward off the irrelevant Cyclone Lusi and may not let a white fella up there with them. I am spending the day with the cult before the ceremony so hopefully they let me tag along... Anyway. I am not so worried about shooting in the day light. I should have plenty of light and have quite a bit of room to play around and be creative. The night stuff is what I am a little nervous about. I know that I should be looking at low ISO, Wide aperture, and slow shutter-speeds. I am bringing a tripod up and will shoot MUp on a timer to reduce shake but this is where it gets difficult. The ground is constantly shaking as the volcano is in an almost permanent earthquake state. I wish I had a fucking drone. Fuck. Any advise? Picture related. [EXIF data available. What do suggest in terms of an upgrade path /p/? Currently only have a Canon EOS 60D with an EF 50mm f/1.8 II, EF-S 55-250 f/4-5.6 IS II and an SP AF17-50mm f/2.8. Thinking of keeping the body (for now) but getting an EF 35mm f/1.4L, EF 28-70mm f/2.8L and an EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS. I'm starting to have regular photog jobs (I've been booked for three conferences and 4 birthdays) so I feel like this is a good upgrade to my current kit. Already ordered a sleuth of flashes and lighting equipment and accessories to round it off. Thoughts?

tumblr vs. 500px

9 posts and 0 image replies omitted. Click to view.
This has probably been discussed before. >Which one is best for what kind of images? To me it seems tumblr is more like a gimmicky hipster blog where images follow either a theme or are just a dump of snapshits whereas 500px is more a genreal dump for polished images and soccer moms like flickr is. Opinions and suggestions please.

Home Studio help!

Bonjour /p/ I'm in the process looking what gear to buy for setting up a home studio but I do not have a huge budget. I'd also like the portability of being able to take lights on a location or something, so I'm thinking of getting some speedlights. What do you guys think of: 1 Alien Bee light - An octa for the Alien Bee 3 Yonguno flashes - Umbrellas (im not sure about white or reflective) - Some speedlight softboxes What I'm concerned about is the quality of light if I use speedlights, all I'm seeing as far as modifiers are square softboxes and the umbrellas. Any modifiers out there that would be good to use for quality lighting? Does anyone have any experience with a studio like this?

I know this is late but holy hell, this guy is ridiculous. http://erickimphotography.com/blog/2012/04/22/why-digital-is-dead-for-me-in-street-photography/ >TL;DR he sold the Leica M9 that was given to him BY LEICA THEMSELVES because he feels like film has "more soul" or some shit. Some gems from the article: >They weren’t cold and lifeless like the digital images I usually shoot- but they had character in the grain structure, ink-jet blacks, and the best of all- great details in the highlights. tip: if your pictures are cold and lifeless with digital it's your fucking fault. >I noticed a few advantages when shooting with film- namely that when people asked me to delete the photo I told them I couldn’t- as it was film. lololol >Shots that were blurry or out-of-focus (that would have looked horible in digital) looked more like beautiful mistakes in film. >I am now making the full transition to film from digital for my personal street photography work, and recently sold my Leica M9 and now making the full move into film. >I don’t have to worry about post-processing. then you fucking suck. >Film isn’t going away anytime soon. lol yes it is. i can't stand people who trash digital for being "inauthentic" or whatever. shooting on digital actually allows one to focus on actual photography more. another example this kid gives is that he shoots less photos using film, as if it's a good thing. how is that ever a good thing?? i can't stand all u film fanboys

Hey /p/ Videofag here I've been wanting to get into stills more and have been looking at panasonic's gh4... I have a wide collection of EF glass, which is obviously a reason to not go with the gh4 but what are your peoples thoughts on MFT? I'm looking for a good stills camera, obviously video capabilities are cool but anything around the 1.7k price range that takes good stills would be an upgrade from my t3i. [EXIF data available.
