Hey, new to /p/ here. What's the difference between a lens with a focal length that is fixed to one where you can adjust it? Say, a 18-135mm lens at 500 and a 50mm lens.

I had some extra scholarship money and decided to buy myself a relatively decent camera to help myself start to improve as a photographer. I haven't shot much with the x100s since I got it, due to school and work. I'll just post some shots, though I know they're all crap. I've been trying to work on composition, sorta ignoring technical stuff for now. Right now a challenge I have is trying to find interesting things to capture, since I'm horrible at making boring subjects seem interesting. Like I said, I know these suck, but some advice on what steps I can take to improve would be appreciated. [EXIF data available. Getting a Niche in Photography to Make dat Bank

I've been looking at Etsy and I've been hoping to throw up a store on there to make some money. Anyone on here do that? I'm not exactly looking to make a living, but I'm just trying to make some money on the side. Hopefully enough in the long run so that my gear can pay for itself. What type of photography sells on there? Any tips for making profitable photographs?

Need some constructive criticism

Hey /p/ I would appreciate some constructive criticism on this shot. I took it March last year and it's from the first "real" photo shoot I did for a band. I know it's not that interesting, but I kinda dig it and I would really like to hear some pointers for what you guys think i can do better.

I was out on a short trip in the yesterdays fog. I've been feeling less of a photographer lately, as if I've lost my eye for it. It's just a few photos, but I'd like you guys to critique them as I can't tell whether they are good or not. [EXIF data available. portrait thread

I really like the stories behind portraits. Can we get a portrait thread with stories behind them? I met this guy in Slab City, near the Salton Sea. He lives in his trailer, plays in the weekly music roundups, and owns a really nice Kawasaki Ninja, I would've guessed a solid $10,000 bike. He was really nice. I wish I could remember his name. The last time I was in Slab City, he was gone, his bike was gone, and the motorhome had new residents. [EXIF data available. If I see banding (of the grey sky) on my screen will it show in print? JPG to print is okay in case resolution is not a problem, yes or no? I mean in sizes around 10x15cm, sometimes slightly bigger, sometimes smaller. It's a high-quality pamphlet. I'm a bit confus about the relation between what I see on my screen and what will come out as a print. Adams' "Print" isn't helping too much as the problem is mainly digital I believe. Any reads of the basics, people? Image included for provocative reasons.
