Scotland vs Ireland

Has anyone been to both Scotland and Ireland and could inform me on the differences in culture and environment? I'm planning on going to one or the other for a few weeks over the summer and can't really make up my mind. PS: Not really going in a touristy way.

Canadian tourist in Buenos Aires here /trv/ So i wanted to go to Brazil for a couple of weeks at the end of the month for Carnivale but lo and behold there's a visa requirement to enter Brazil and i had to cancel the flight that i had literally just made. Is there anything i can do on such short notice? I paid the reciprocity fees to enter Chile & Argentina and i had assumed i would have to do the same for Brazil and that's how i got this terrible news.

Hey /trv/, got a plan I wanted to run by you. My spring break from college this year is gonna be around 10 days. I was thinking of checking out the Baltic countries. Here's what I was thinking - Fly into Helsinki as it has the cheapest flights from New York - Do Helsinki - Tallinn - Riga - Vilnius This is just kind of a spur of the moment idea I had, so I'm not entirely sure I want to do it yet. That's why I'm here I guess. I'm not loaded so I'd like to do this on the cheap. I have friends in Helsinki who I can stay with so Finland won't be as expensive as it could be, but I'm curious about the actual Baltics an how cheap I can do it. tl;dr what do in baltics. is it worth 10 days. how cheap is it. is weather alright in mid-march. any and all advice is appreciated, especially from the finnfags and baltfags that are lurking on this board.

alright hit me some advice guys, i want to know what you would do in my position im planning on going to canada this year, im thinking of going in summer now i have some options, leave a little earlier and try to pick up work before summer starts, and or find work when im over there in summer or not work over summer, instead spend it travelling around and doing this and that, instead trying to find work for the next winter season, (since i would already be there i could get in early as far as finding work it concerned) when i leave ill have about 10k tl:dr: travel during summer, look for work in winter or try find work in summer

I am absolutely convinced that the perfect cure for depression and loneliness is world travelling, and that there is a distinct connection between the two.

So I spoke with a friend this weekend who spent 3 months in China after having lived in Taiwan for a year. She was in Hunan and speaks fluent Mandarin and Cantonese, but she's white. Anyway, she's a well-travelled person and described China as probably the most awful place she'd ever been. She said there was a lot of nature, but that the Chinese approach to that is to build a big road through a natural area and then jam it full of tour buses full of people, rather than to establish a good system of trails. She said the people were all extremely rude, xenophobic, racist, sexist, and selfish, constantly ripping her off, and at one point a guy spat on her and said something nasty about Americans (she's not American). She also said girls would call her whore in the street often if/when she was walking with a Chinese male friend, and when travelling with her boyfriend for part of the time (otherwise she was alone), they'd refuse to talk to her, only him, despite him not speaking any Mandarin. Apparently they also became flustered if she mentioned she'd been in Taiwan, and the people all believed it was just another province. What's the deal with China, /trv/, specifically rural parts?

First time poster, so bare with me here. Anyways, in a couple of months I'm travelling to the Chicago area on a university exchange program, which naturally means flying into O'Hare. The bus that will pick me up, only comes on one day at 1pm Sunday, okay that sounds fine I thought. Alas, the last flight from Heathrow gets into O'Hare at around midnight Saturday, and the next isn't til ~11am Sunday, no good for clearing Murrica's silly immigration hoops. So my question is this, seeing as I'm under 21 and therefore unable to check into hotels due to the equally silly minimum age, would I be able to spend the night/morning in arrivals? Or would I get thrown out? tl;dr Can I spend 12 hours in arrivals without getting thrown out of the airport? Cheers

Sup /trv/, I am an undergrad applying for a scholarship to study abroad for a few weeks (In France). The problem is, I have no idea what to write on the essay portion. Of course I want to study abroad and eventually go to a grad school abroad. But I'm not sure how to "stick out." Anyone ever written an essay for a scholarship to go abroad? (and received one) just want some examples.

Hi, /trv/! I'm planning my itinerary for a trip to Spain (and possibily some nearby countries). I arrive in Lisbon on may, 5th at 10am and depart on the 22th. The only thing I have scheduled so far is to spend from may 6th to 11th in Sevilla. Where do you recommend me to spend the rest of my days there? 2 friends are coming along, a male and a female. I'm male, 27, btw.

Studying Abroad in English. Japan offers a fuckton of masters programs in English that foreigners can enter. It's a pretty sweet deal to get a degree, subsidized housing, etc. Plus the coveted visa. Of course the drawback is paying for a masters. Any other countries have as good or better deals? I mean places that are hard to get long-term visas in otherise, like the EU.

headed to Varadero on Friday for a week with some buds and was wondering if any of you guys have any experience or advice for buying and getting authentic Cuban cigars there cause I know there's a lot of imitators. I know just the basics pretty much of just not buying from any of the beach vendors. thanks in advance

So next summer or about 1 year from now I am planning to pretty much Vagabond from the US down south through central America then through South America. I am then planning on going to the South Pole then basically return via an opposite route or opposite side of South America back to the US. This will be for both the experience and a personal pilgrimage of sorts. I need some help though. >Male, will be 19 when I depart. >I expect to spend about 1-2 year(s) doing this. >Will have around 3-7K total so will spend a lot of nights outside/inside a Church. >I don't know which route to take/which is safest. >What gear I should bring. >I have a car but should I sell it? Any advice in general that some of you more advanced travelers can give is needed. Also just as a note, Im not really looking for the sex tourism or any drugs like some others have made threads about.
