I have been practicing modeling for a short while now, gave my first real attempt to rigging, not bad, IK was simple enough and over all not a painful process.
White painting, or Skinning, that is a totally different story. My purpose of this post was to ask those within the industry; Who Skins the character during this process is it the job of the modeler or animator?

Shouldn't the modeler both create the character and textures for it?

The modeler is responsible for making clean geometry as few nGons, or polygons with more than 4 sides, as possible. They are also responsible for doing the UV layout, since UVs are important to both rigging and texture work.

Weight painting, or skinning for some, is the job of the character rigger.

I have no idea about the larger part of the industry, but i do literally everything when it comes to working on assets for a project. Modelling, unwrapping, texturing, rigging, skinning (and depending if i need to or not) animating.
