I have been really insecure about my sculptures lately. i feel like they are blend and life less and because i have been having trouble sculpting exactly from a concept picture.

so here is something i made today in an hour or so. what are opinions on it?

He was just teasing you, really, that's like 2/10 on an amateur scale. It lacks any sense of workable anatomy, it's like you have a very vague sense of where general anatomical features go and flow, but no idea how to really sculpt them. It also looks like you had no real sense of direction, just randomly sculpting out lumps all over to try and create interesting shapes, but failing.

1. Study anatomy, it is important for creating believable creatures.
2. Work at low resolution until your silhouette looks good enough to be moving up to higher detail.

No, he wasn't "teasing". Its that good. There will always be a negative opinions. Sometimes even a large number of negative opinions. Dont listen to them. Trust your gut.

OP here, im gonna admit i almost know nothing about the human body anatomy, like you said i have a vague idea. I only put time to learn the human face but that didn't really come to use since this is hardly a human face. I also know that i really need to learn my wrinkle placements.

your OP pic is ok, i think 7-8/10 is pretty fair. It's not amazing but it does show some basic skill in sculpting. But the really noticeable thing is the lack fo anatomy. that's a fairly generic phrase people throw around a lot but here it's obvious - the various folds and protrusions just appear where you think they look good and don't corerspond to any underlying structure, and thus the whole form is a bit bland.

Also noticeable is that the silhouette is actually fairly bland once you get past all the surface detail. You should work in 2D first, sketching out silhouettes of creatures in black/white (or dark grey on a light grey bg, whatever), just to give you a feel for a dynamic looking, interesting creature - without worrying about what exactly each feature is. Then once you have a silhouette you like you can work it up into a sculpture. But try to focus more on making strong, recogniseable shapes very earlyu on before adding any details, and stay in that stage until you're happy with your form. Don't be too quick to rush into the details stage - when you're learning it's fine to take time on each thing as long as you make sure it's right. You'll learn a lot more that way.

This is the kind of work I'd expect from a new student on his first day trying ZBrush, and who isn't already a good 2D artist. So 2/10, where 0/10 is absolute shit and 10/10 is ILM/MPC/Blur/SquareEnix level quality.

Please, explain in what way that comment would be trolling. If you actually think OP's sculpt is anywhere close to decent, you're either also a shitty sculptor trying to maintain a delusion about your own skill level, or you're OP trying to defend his own work.

It's a randomly made mush of a face with lumps drawn all over it, it does not take skill to make something like that.

not OP but would love to see some of your work... because 95% of the people who talk shit on this site are shitty artists who are insecure about their own skills and call out anyone with better sculpting skills than them

ok op, you made a blob monster.
*clap**clap**clap**clap**clap*

you say you have no anatomical knowledge... thats good actualy, you know what you need to learn already.

watch this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4g9JCkeZCvs&feature=em-uploademail

thats what you should be doing.
doit with the head, do it with the body, do it with every fucking aspect of the human body.
this will force you to think of how underlying muscle and how the body would be made.

look at it. can you explain why everything on it is the way it is?
thats a fairly major problem because there is no way you can.
can the monster even open its mouth all the way?

google some medical texts, and look at other people do anatomy studies.

anyone saying this is more than a 4/10 is not a good judge of anything. you know the program and thats the biggest hurdle, now make a base mesh of a human and get to work making muscle structures.

you have a clear idea what you want to do so it takes you time to set it up.

while you can google 30 minute sculpts and 1 hour sculpts that beet things you make by just people practicing skill.

if you were to make this asymmetrical, it would look horrid but in a good way.

like for an indie horror game that you could sell for about $5 a pop.

make it so.
