Say I want to model a high poly tactical police shotgun on maya. Where exactly do I begin?
Anonymous 03/15/14(Sat)21:45 UTC+1 No.414662 Report

begin by opening maya :)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Anonymous 03/15/14(Sat)21:51 UTC+1 No.414663 Report

Done. Now what?
Anonymous 03/15/14(Sat)22:36 UTC+1 No.414671 Report

With a reference :)))))))))))))))

now close it again and go to youtube, type in maya gun modeling tutorial and hit enter
Anonymous 03/16/14(Sun)07:14 UTC+1 No.414716 Report

download and install maya
open it
close, uninstall because i don't like maya
install 3ds max instead because of superiority

>Delete Maya from your pc
>come to the realisation you don't have the gumption to attempt any 3d modelling
>move on with your life

Why Blender you ask?
Because Blender is far more powerful than any other 3D software, all major studios and companies use it.
Example: Iron Man 1,2 and 3 was all done in Blender. Major games like Assasins Creed, Halo 1 through 4, All CoD games was made in Blender.
It also has waaaay more tools and features than any other 3D software.

avatar was also made with blender's robust mocap suite.

Pick 1 part and model that. Make the pump, or make the barrel, or make the sight. When you have all the pieces put them together.

Its a lot less scary and intimidating to go piece by piece.

That's illegal. You should pay the full price.

If making a high poly gun like that shotgun, are you supposed to make the whole thing as one mesh, or would it be better to make it as a single object with multiple meshes inside it for different parts?
If you would separate it into different meshes, which areas would you give their own mesh (for example would you make the barrel and the pump under it as one mesh, or would each one have its own mesh?)
Anonymous 03/23/14(Sun)08:15 UTC+1 No.415797 Report

depends. What will you be using this for?
Anonymous 03/23/14(Sun)08:43 UTC+1 No.415800 Report

If you were making a highly detailed prop then obviously you would have to use multiple meshes for individual parts.
Ideally you make your asset whichever way works out best for a particular project. If your physics engine doesn't enjoy intersecting polygons, then that's how it is. If you believe the rendering engine is capable of rendering separate intersecting objects without lighting issues, such as modular buildings and complex spacecraft in general, then you can leave geometry floating, or you have to do extra work so that the end user doesn't notice
