ECG FINALS Anonymous 06/27/14(Fri)13:53 UTC+1 No.7640685 Report

European Cosplay Gathering finals next week, is anyone going to watch? Who is your favourite team?
>>
Anonymous 06/27/14(Fri)19:05 UTC+1 No.7641168 Report

It's my first time at Japan Expo this year, can't wait to see the ECG finals along with all the other Cosplay events going on. How many costumes do people generally bring?

Anonymous 06/27/14(Fri)20:00 UTC+1 No.7641263 Report

I'm guessing there will be a stream again this year, hopefully I can watch that because I can't attend.

Only teams I remember being interested in from the qualifiers were Germany and UK. The solo from Germany Naraku does some gorgeous work (and I loved the group's characters, but can't remember the quality of the costumes).

All the UK competitors seem to have SUCH well finished costumes from their progress pics, I'm excited to see them.

There has never been a ECG stream, they won't let it. Some Spanish guy tried to stream some entries last year but he had problems with the equipment
It's EC that usually streams the contest

Yees her work is gorgeous too! I've actually been following it but I forgot who it was specifically because there are so many WoW (and similar) armour sets around at the moment. Props to her for doing a Dranei (sp?) too.

I also loved the France group act when they qualified last year, and individually they're all strong contestants.

Dammit, I'm sad I can't go now, it's normally the cosplay highlight of the year for me.

>>7642803
The belgian team is strong, but they have a lot of internal drama over the contestants. I like their costumes too, although none of them have done anything that clearly stands out as amazing, despite consistently making nice and clean stuff it still has that "cosplay" quality to the finish.

Poland duo is funny. One girl's mother died some weeks ago and representant didn't decided to give up and stay with family. She just kepp using her tragedy as excuses of her bad progress. I saw it, she wrote that on ECG representatives group. Well...
But Poland is always very lucky, even if they do shitty job.

Except season 1 I think France's last 2 group wins were fair. Last year there was no one who came near the French group and I think the girls from season 2 were the best that year and great in stage, very entertaining which plays a big role in ECG placing

I believe France always wins because they are the first to select their representatives and they have an entire year to prepare for the finals. They are also "playing at home" which means they most probably don't need to get on a plane to go to JE and their costumes and props are much less restricted by that

Well, having seen the prelims last year they really needed that year.
I dunno what was wrong last year, but the only worthwhile cosplay was during the ECG, from all the other competitions combined, including all the preliminaries, maybe 5 costumes were of a decent level. The acts were, except for 1, totally rubbish and I was just hoping for that one nice costume that never came.

Are you a portugese anon? Lol I am. I haven't seen progress shots either but I think if the group worked hard they can do it. They have the potencial to do so, If they don't it's because they didn't give their best. I have faith for PT, we might no reach the top 3, but I'm pretty sure it will be better than last year. It is not all about costumes. Last year the costumes for the group were nice but the skit was so bad,for example. Have faith anon

Well, a lot of people have felt that way for a while, at least around Lex and Sands. People are so used to it we don't even have drama about it any more.

I just feel bad for our representatives next year, because... Yeah, how do you top a double win? There are plenty of amazing UK cosplayers, but these guys really are some of the best in their respective preferred areas. I hope it doesn't put people off entering though.

Oh no, it hasn't put me off entering (though I'm not going for ECG this/next year as been looking at expos and maybe EC) contests - I see contests as one way to making better costumes - it's just even with the best will in the world...why bother? One way would be to be judged 'better' than them but I don't see that happening.

I find it quite sad if people's reactions are why bother, we can never get a double win. You should be proud of your country that you have such amazing cosplayers and be inspired by that.
It's just an excuse to not bother if you say - oh well they're better so what's the point - the point is to make something you're proud of and do it because you love Cosplay which your UK winners obviously do

I'm so glad this costume won, hopefully it'll encourage more people to do detail based costumes. At first glance it doesn't look like she's wearing much but it's thousands of beads and hundreds of hours of work on a really well tailored garment. And that hat. She might not be Nicole Kidman, but you do recognise Satine in her too.

I'm just really hoping the skit was entertaining. ECG is really not about the perfect costume construction, it's more about the show they put on. If the winners were chosen only on costume construction, it means that ECG is slowly trying to copy EC.

The armour looks bad, but it's a "hard" thing to do. But from the picture she could at least have done a peticoat and that's a beginner step and not to do it a mistake.

I'm sad with my country's group, it's nothing against them, they just could have done much better. It's like they didn't even try.

To be honest there weren't better groups last year to chose from. There was the 1st time Pt had WCS and I think that shifted the attentions from ECG and groups started to plan to try it soon. Also we don't have long lasting solid groups.

The thing that REALLY REALLY botheres me is that them and the solo, were the 1st cosplayers here to get materials for free, and the groups just fucked up big time. Most cosplayers, and some better (much) would kill for an opportunity like that.

We have a nasty thing in our community, it seems that everyone preferes to be making new costumes all the time for everything, and BIG costumes instead of caring about the high quality in each one of them. It's like we rather have quantity over quality.

Better luck in the future we hope.

Well, Paine was a judge, so she still got to go and be important. I was looking back at her old costumes the other day and I miss when she did more ambitious stuff. I suppose now she wants to do quality detail work or doesn't want to do that style of costume anymore, but it was more fun to see.

I wonder why Soph and Cyclone reused the same costumes? Maybe they remade loads of it, but it wasn't very inspiring. I guess you never know if someone has RL problems in the way or something though.

Just because they had cool features doesn't mean they're well made.
They were my favourite group but it was clear they wouldn't win because their costumes weren't as polished as others, which was clear even from an audience stand point.
>>
Anonymous 07/08/14(Tue)08:30 UTC+1 No.7664547 Report

>>7664466
Agreed. What they did was really cool and fun, but if you compare the costumes to the references the quality of the finish is not tremendously high, especially compared to the groups who places 2nd and 1st.

The Frozen group's costumes appear near perfect, and the UK's seem to be near replicas of film costume.

I love that Spain chose Starfox and props to them for the moving mouths, but unfortunately when you're judged on construction and accuracy, picking mascot heads is going to lose you a lot of points unless you can make film pupettry level ones. (I still love them, just being objective in terms of judging)

I think based on source material UK and France group did just as well as each other, but UK has slightly more ambitious costumes.

Act wise France is more entertaining, because they just lifted scenes from an entertaining and easy to relate to film, and a costume change is fun to watch. It's not really original or impressive though, just well polished.

UK's performance also didn't wow me, but it's really well executed and the horns were a nice trick. I think it's a deserved win because costume/performance they are the most complete and well executed from overall look down to little tailoring details.
>>
Anonymous 07/08/14(Tue)09:13 UTC+1 No.7664644 Report

>>7664547
Agree 100% with this post.

Star fox was entertaining and very funny with the boys throwing themselves into it but you could see even from the audience that the costumes weren't very polished, they used cheap fur that looked messy in places on the heads and hands and the costumes were very simple.

France had a very nice entertaining skit and neat costumes but it was just lifted songs so they were relying on all the frozen fans and nothing very original for a frozen skit even though the quick change was well done.

UK had replica costumes and wrote out their own scene, and audio. They were also the only group that used the entire stage space and really acted out their performance. It was overall the most ambitious and well crafted.

I think this sentiment is also the same for the solo choices

It's more internal drama, because the belgian scene has a circle of people who consistently get selected to compete in ECG, and despite the fact they're all good cosplayers it's starting to reek of nepotism and elitism. Also because they don't do any better each time they're sent.

(Example: male ECG group member is ECG and EC rep this year, and has already been in ECG before. One of the judges, who also judges prelims I think, has been ECG and EC rep several times before. I think people just wish new blood could step up - I doubt any of them would mind if someone better than them turned up and qualified.)
