Well, another kick starter asking people to fund their hobby has appeared... And already bagged over 1k in a day. Thoughts? Copy pasta from the kick starter page

>>
Anonymous 09/23/14(Tue)19:22 UTC+1 No.7836815 Report

These are the confirmed cosplayers... Once again it's just a clique of photographers asking for money to get a free vacation with their friends. Wonder If jnig will drop out again.

Rewards for backing are pretty shitty too. 100$ lets you watch them shoop the shit out of their photos via live stream.. Or grants you the privilege to watch them shoot some pre determined model at blizzcon. But hey, even better, 40$ gets you a phone case you could easily get made for half the price! Wow!

Wildplaces raked in 30k, but all they did was buy new camera equipment, take their friends out in humvees to take calendar style pics in the desert, and take a boat vacation for poorly planned "bikini" pictures.

Considering the cosplayers and photogs involved, I doubt this will be much different.. Bgz is the guy who tried to sue scifi for using his photo, and jnig dropped out AFTER wild places was fully backed already.
>>
Anonymous 09/23/14(Tue)19:33 UTC+1 No.7836840 Report

Idk. The quality of the participating photogs vs. Fischer makes me have a bit more hope that it seems most of you do. Despite the Wild Places fiasco, the amount they're asking for is much, much less and the overall quality of photographers is higher. The rewards are kind of shitty though.

>>7836824
I thought it was determined that JNigs dropped because Ljinto has beef with Anna and threatened to stop sugar daddying some of her travel expenses/shooting with her.

Wildplaces wasn't asking 30k, but because of their cosplayer line up they got a ton... I doubt they would have made as much if jnig wasnt involved from the start.

Either way, this is just a repeat. The photographer clique has such an inflated ego and now they're expecting other people to pay for their hobby.

Fischer already said on her Twitter that they ran out of money awhile ago and had to wait to do the last few shoots until more funds became available, so those "rewards" could be delayed until next year.
Though the likely scenario will be that nobody receives anything, because their free ride is over and that book is never getting made.

that venom but if you sift this through the internet hate machine 4chan filter, this person is intelligent

>you'd think these retards would get the clue and realize that they are only funding vacations and paying bills for the people who do start these crowdfund campaigns

i hate the local businesses (usually video game stores, or comic book stores or something "nerdy") that use crowdfunding/sourcing as their sole source of startup capital

that just screams massive scam, it's like they can't fin their own investors who are willing to put forth the capital for a return?

when you donate to a crowdfunding website, you're supplying someone with wealth or the resources to develop long term wealth for nothing in return

this isn't charity, you are literally directly contributing to someone else's financial goals for a trinket or a thank you letter.
>>
Anonymous 09/23/14(Tue)21:42 UTC+1 No.7837275 Report

I understand to an extent the point people are making about "it's their money and if they're stupid enough to give it away to crooks then haha fuck them", but that's just the thing.
Some people ARE stupid. Some people ARE simple, and that's the plain and honest truth. People want to be accepted and noticed by others, especially in cosplay, and they believe throwing money at these causes will get them what they feel they need. I remember seeing the thread about Wild Places here way back, and some girl admitting she paid top dollar to be in Anna's book because she wanted to get more likes on her page, and that she has since learned from her mistake. But some people will never learn.

These crowdfunding campaigns are getting the brunt of their funding by taking advantage of people who are literally too stupid to know any better. And to me, that's not "a shift in the cosplay culture". That's fraud.

devil's advocate, some cosplayer's feel the need to pay for friendship/acceptance since they tend to be the outliers in society or the nerdy types in high school.

if it wasn't these people, its going to be someone else. This type of fraud is rampant in the cosplay world, because a need for it exists.
there is a desire there to be accepted, and there isn't a solution that you, i or 4chan has for it.

nothing you do/say/write/post will stop sally sue from paying her way into likes on a facebook page, paying to be in a book, or paying yaya han to be on her syfy show

you don't feel this need to be accepted, so let it be

So from what I've gathered here, you're saying that, "if someone is committing fraud, let it rest because it's going to happen either way."

That's literally the dumbest thing I've ever read. Let someone continue ripping people off because "oh well it's going to happen to someone somewhere lol". Taking money from someone under a false pretense is not only unethical, it's illegal, and that's what these cosplayers and photographers are doing.

Guess we should just stop prosecuting people for fraud because "a need for it exists"?

>Some people ARE stupid. Some people ARE simple, and that's the plain and honest truth.

One of their rewards is watching them do a live shoot at Blizzcon,
Blizzcon is in 6 weeks,
The Kickstarter ends in 4 weeks.

So you are paying for all 4 of them to take an extended trip to Blizzcon and some shooting on days before/after the con.

How much of their own money are they even putting into this? This is really a fun sort of project that they should just fund themselves if they really want to do it. If it was truly important enough for them to do they would be putting their own money into it.

The rewards aren't kind of shitty, THEY ARE SHITTY.

All of those photos are just extensively shooped, if that's your cup of tea.

Let's see:
- Use expensive prime lenses to take shallow depth-of-field photos
- Bump up contrast and saturate colors like Martin Wong (but without his stupid orange backlight effect)
- Add particle brush and the sparks effect (because it's only been used how many times?)
- Oh, I forgot LAYERS, YOU MUST ADD FUCKING LAYERS
Free lession over, you're welcome.

I know his Project Lex made more money than he asked for since he had 2-3 crowdsourcing pages up for it, and there was the Liz Katz BS, but then after like 20 pics, that was it. He's never mentioned it again now and both FB pages for both are gone.

That's down to shitty photographers being shitty.

Here's the real problem with these kickstarters. Instead of putting in the time to learn how to take good photos and make good costumes and make the best out of what limited resources you have, these people say fuck that and think they can beg for money and buy their way to the top. Guess what, a clueless amateur with a fucktonne of money is still a clueless amateur. If you're actually good at what you do then you don't need to beg for money to buy all the nice gear you want because you'll already be earning enough money to buy it all yourself. When you make these kickstarters you are telling the world that you're too shit to earn your way to that gear and you're too lazy to get good.

Somebody needs to take these hacks out for a shoot, strip them of all their gear and hand them an entry level SLR and a single cheap prime and make them work the afternoon with just that. Maybe they'd learn not to squander their locations, time and money if they tried working without the impression that having more money will translate into better pictures.

You can easily buy Blizzcon tickets on Ebay. They range in price from 200$ - 400$.

Some people in very tight knit guilds will also temporarily buy their fellow guild mates tickets since it can be difficult to get them, but I doubt that's what's going on here >>7839638.

I always wondered why people like this are so obsessed about going to Blizzcon if they're not particularly interested in the games. Is it about the "prestige" of saying you've been? Unlike general comic cons, there is very little to do there if you're not a Blizzard fan. If you're not going to spend time at the convention why bother buying a badge since hanging out in front is free if you just want pictures.

>>7839592
You can only blame cosplayers so much. At the end of the day the pictures are down to whoever looks through the viewfinder and releases the shutter. If a cosplayer is giving you a shitty pose it's your job to direct them. The only people who don't need direction are life long career supermodels and you have to be a real moron to expect cosplayers to be up to that standard.

So yeah the cosplayers did a shitty job too but in the end really that is just another way of highlighting how green these wannabe photographers are. They should be paying to go to workshops themselves, not charging other people $100 for their obviously limited expertise. Like it would be fine if they were clueless newbies doing no harm, but they're charging people a lot of money for this shit and in turn are badly teaching the next generation all kinds of bullshit as well.

I think its a 50/50 split for the blame. These arent random first time cosplayers in a con center with nothing but tiled floors to work with. These bitches have been around and most photographers wait in line to shoot them. They arent really giving shit poses just not utilizing the locations. As a cosplayer you should strive to get better poses and actively look around for objects to interact with if your on location. They all knew where they were going. Hell whenever I go shoot with a photog at a location I google search the area before so I can think of possible poses I might wanna try with different objects like stairs or a waterfall or whatever. I wanna get the most out of my time and not regret missing out on a location or pose. It really can take a shoot from being average to amazing. We work so hard on our costumes but I think for a lot of ppl it stops after the costume leaves the sewing machine. Im not saying you have to direct the whole shoot but being active during the shoot can lead to a more successful photos.

Maybe its just me. But the second I start a new costume I am already planning potential shoot locations and not only looking a references of character images online but also fashion shoots, movies, art ideas I would like to try in the costume.

This is so true. I don't cosplay anymore, but when I did, I worked with so many photographers who had no idea what the fuck they were doing. They knew their equipment, but that was about it. They never told me when a part of my costume was flipped up, or when my wig was acting all stupid and the first thing they'd say to me is "where do you want to go?" when we'd meet up.

After a few times of dealing with this frustration, I started bring mirrors along with me and doing heavy research into locations. If I was corresponding with a photographer before the con, I'd tell them where and what I wanted to do. I'd send them poses of my character along with a small write up of my character's personality/traits/etc.
As a cosplayer, it's important to be proactive and sometimes you have to just take the reins if you want shit to get done and have usable photos after the fact.

To be fair you can't expect everybody to be intimately familiar with every character and anime and comic and videogame characters are so varied and often so unrealistic that it would be hard to tell if something is wrong with your costume or if it is intended to be that way.

I think Liz might not do another or if she does it's less likely to work out. When she did her first one a lot of people still didn't realise she was a porn star. Now virtually everybody is aware and there are way fewer desperate neckbeards who will pay to see some cosplay cleavage when they know they can watch her 69ing Lexi Belle for free.

This. Some of these people are on my friends list. They're nice most of the time, but that's not relavant. I don't care how "nice" someone is if they're going around panhandeling and trying to fraud people out of their money.

Do you need to be intimately familiar with a character to tell your cosplayer that their wig needs smoothed down on the side? I mean, some of it is really basic common sense.
I had one photographer do an entire shoot with a loop of wig hair sticking out on one side of my head. You shouldn't need intimate knowledge of a character to see when something simply doesn't look right, and if in doubt, ask.

I'm actually sitting here in shock, trying to understand how something like this got funding. I'm hoping it was just the circlejerk of friends donating amongst each other, and not actual "fans" donating, while thinking they're going to get anything useful out paying for a group of self-obsessed, overrated photogs to take a vacation.

Exactly. I'd rather have someone ask me straight up to get the issue cleared away, versus having to ask them to spend time fixing it in post later...when it could have been corrected with a simple, "is ____ supposed to be like that?" It's extremely unlikely than any cosplayer will take offense, and if they do, you should consider not shooting with self-absorbed tards.

Theyd see it even if I didnt talk to them about it. I know they browse cgl because they post vague buttmad statuses when people talk shit. Then they lie and say they dont go on cgl and try to act like theyre too good of people to come here. Youre probably one of them anyway. People defending this shit reek of samefags from the project and famewhores that want to be part of it.

If someone publicly says "cgl is absolute cancer and it should be destroyed", it's a safe bet they come here often. Maybe not to post, but definitely to lurk.

Someone who didn't come to cgl wouldn't care about its destruction enough to post about it on their social media outlets, while at the same time looking for headpats from peers because they think hating on cgl makes them look like some kind of saint.
