Any ex-military here that can give your opinion on the chow in the service? Particularly Navy, as that's what i'm heading for.

Not ex-military, but spent some time around military installations.

>Prepare to shit bricks.
He is probably referring to MREs, they have a tendency to back you up, until you take a god awful massive dump. I actually like a lot of the MRE meals, and buy them as a civilian, but others say they are horrid. With everything winding down tough, I wouldn't worry about them too much.

I've only had banquet food with the Navy, it's okay, nothing to get excited about. Army chow is pretty good in my experience.

If I had to extrapolate from my experience and talking to military guys, it will be digestible food but pretty bland, they are cooking for a large audience.

Also, might want to float a balloon over on /k/, they usually don't mind, but I would probably throw another military question in there.

You went full fucking retard.

Food onboard ship is fucking terrible. The CS's have to follow the menu cards to the letter. And each class of ship has (had?) a specific menu that was pre-planned which they had to follow. We were doing a long series of sea trials in the spring and fall of 2007. One of the ships (FFG-38) in the JTFX (Joint Task Force eXercise), was full of reservists. Reservists don't know shit. Especially navy reservists. Anyways, they didn't have an ET onboard with any NEC related to communications and their LINK-11 system wasn't working. Guess who got voluntold? Yup, ET3 anon. And wouldn't you know it? Their menu was the exact same as FFG-61.

After a couple of weeks underway, get ready for dry ass chicken with potato wedges. Or dry ass fish with potato wedges. It will get way worse. When you're getting supplies from our middle eastern "allies", these local shithole authorized suppliers know they've selling their shittiest food to Uncle Sam so they don't give a fuck.

Though, a couple of the recipes can be good if the right CS does it: White bean chicken chili and mullagatawny.

ET2 continuing on...

This is a mostly complete list of the chowhalls I experienced:

Recruit Training Command, Great Mistakes, Illinois: Fucking garbage. The Navy did away with service week about 10-11 years ago. So instead of Navy feeding navy, they know employ crack heads from North Chicago as part of a publicity campaign. Think prison food.

Naval Training Center, Great Mistakes, Illinois: Pretty much the same as above. Crack heads feeding everyone. The only positive thing was Ms. Pearl in the hamburger line.

San Diego, Dry Side Galley: Avoid the express line. Go to the meal side on the right. It's alright. Not great. But usually not bad. Though, if you can deal with the rude ass filipinos, the bowling alley has a fucking awesome hamburger.

Naval Station Everett Galley: Decent for breakfast or lunch, but dinner sucks. They try to turn it into a restaurant but they just serve the same shit as lunch menu. Oh and they have waitresses you provide horrible service in the evening.

USS Ingraham: In-port, breakfast was shitty except for the egg station. Underway, gets horrible quickly. Get ready to be served gravy and bread for midrats.

Naval Station Everett Pierside Cafe: Fast food. Overpriced burgers, pizzas, etc. Fucking swimming in grease but way better than the ship food. Ran by shikster filipinos.

Naval Station Bangor Galley: Fucking delicious. This is where I separated from so I guess they had to save the best for last.

Don't fight guys.

The navy fucking sucks. Wasted my early and mid 20s in it. I shipped off exactly 10 years and 1 day ago. When you finally hit the fleet, you realize just how bad it's going to be. Many naval bases still don't have barracks rooms for <= E-4. So you get to keep all your worldly possessions in two fucking tiny lockers. Or a coffin locker if you lucked out. Then after an arduous day getting treated like shit by an illiterate PO1 or Chief, you can either spend it sitting in one of two lounges on the boat. These lounges will have the lights off because a room full of guys are watching porn with blankets over their laps OR you can go to the base bar to get as drunk as possible so you can forget how much life in the navy sucks.

The stereotype of the drunken sailor is real.

Basically, it refers to machinist's mates. They keep the boat moving (mechanical. hydraulic, and nuclear systems) and the weapons firing. For the record, anything having to do with nuclear power is pretty much a license to print money in the civilian world. There's all kinds of other ratings on a boat...all you have to do is ask yourself what you are interested and where you want to go when you get out.

Ex Norwegian army here.
It varies from base to base.
Boot camp food made me shit 4 times a day, but was alright, decent food.
Later I was in a smaller base, and the food there was godly, when you're in smaller bases you get the same food as the officers.

From what I've heard from a couple of US army guys stationed in Norway, is that there's loads of unhealthy food in the US army, soda dispensers, deep fried food, burgers and so on.

I wish I had pictures of what I ate on deployment. I only have one meal picture I took and that's because it was the best food I ever got from a dfac on an army base

My fobs were closing and so the dfacs were also closed. We went a long time on mres.

But on BAF the food was amazing. Fresh baked bread...I could have cried the first time I ate there. I had been so hungry for so long, and then there was sudden salad, sandwich, and taco bars right in front of me. Not even including the main chow lines.

I'll dig up that one picture and maybe anything else I have food related

The fruit was self-serve, the eggs and french toast sticks were from the main line and that is EXACTLY how many you were allowed. No more

The cereal I think you were allowed to take two of, and two drinks per person also (not counting water bottles)

They don't give a fuck. Federal govt non-military nuclear is in line before you, AF is in line before you, Navy is just about tied with what limited army nuclear exists.

You aren't going to get a great job because you aren't a real engineer.

What do you think? Enlisted experience isn't going to bring you up to the level of someone with a 4 year degree. Nuclear engineering is a super specific niche - very few positions and you are aware there will be officers with the same specialty who will be far more employable.

Its like how all those guys go in as MPs and you know there cannot possibly be that many civilian police careers even with vet pref.

Pretty much, a slight step up, you'll make decent money like $20 an hour plus benefits but won't have much room to move up because management will be people who are educated.

You infinitely improve you position by getting a ROTC scholarship before signing up rather than taking the GI after. You also get commissioned without much risk.

Yeah, obviously if you plan on going into the service before you enter high school. I decided to join the navy because i was told i could get into this bullshit nuclear field and i really don't have any other choice, jobs are pretty fucking hard to find with no experience and this gives me 6 years to think.

But yes, obviously if you know what you plan on doing, ROTC through high school and a degree to go in as an officer.

Hey Gunny. ET2 here. Anyone who could form a coherent thought was disgruntled. The only people who stay in are retards who marry some fat chick with kids. I had my bible thumping DIVO, the only CWO on the boat tell me they only reason they didn't give me the EP was because I didn't plan on reenlisting. Then said retention was the most important thing a CO is graded on so shit rolls downhill. Turned down a $75,000 reenlistment bonus without a second thought. No fucks were given.

I remember GM being CREO 1 when I was in. Hated seeing guys show up as GMSA and make GM2 the first test. Or those fucking god damn OSs. ASVAB score of an 11? Only want to work 1.5 hours a day after quarters before lib call? Be an OS. You'll make E5 within 2 years of enlisting as an Obviously Stupid. I once took a support call to IC/Gyro because the OS1 ALPO couldn't figure out why his vacuum cleaner wasn't working. Nor could any of his subordinates in combat at the time.

You're dead on about hot sauce though. Tiger sauce and Tabasco on every table. Plus we all had our own bottles. Ranch was impossible to find on the messdecks, especially underway. The orifices and chiefs got all that stuff.

because the paleo diet is silly.

Also, there are all sorts of requirements that you wouldn't think about, like the supply chain of where the food comes from and how it is transported. It's one thing to shop for yourself. Now imagine managing the logistics of feeding hundreds if not thousands of soldiers--you might have a great meal idea, but if you can't get the ingredients shipped to the right place at the right time it doesn't matter how yummy or healthy it might sound. There's also concerns about allergies, religious objections, vegetarian meals, etc. It's quite a hard problem to address.

Active duty Marines.

It depends on where you are eating, and what the facilities are.

MRE's:

MRE's are not going to compare to home cooked food, or actual chow hall food in most cases. However, they're still pretty decent tasting if you get the right ones and make them the correct way.

I'm not going to go into detail about what you should mix and match, but you can often trade random shit and make an awesome meal. The key is mixing shit together. Bonus points because a lot of the time MRE's have zero accountability so you can just rat fuck the absolute shit out of them and make your own meals.

Key thing here is rat fucking. If there are unattended mre's, rat fuck them to get what you want. People also usually throw out good shit all the time, so don't be afraid to ask for their shit. When you're deployed or in the field for a long ass time, the little accessories bag has all sorts of useful shit in it.

UGR's:

UGR's are the hot chow equivalent of MRE's. The food service pogs make that shit, and some of it's pretty good. The stews/casserole type shit, in my opinion is the best. Avoid "steaks". I would say in most cases that I would rather have an MRE than even bother getting up and walking somewhere for this shit.

Breakfast is pretty shitty, the eggs are usually awful, the bacon awful, etc. You might get bagels and cream cheese depending. Orange drink is better than grape, and they almost always have cappuccino/hot chocolate/coffee packets to go with the hot water. Steal these for later.

Key thing for hot chow, etc, is to steal as much shit for later as possible. You never know when you're going to get anything other than an MRE again so fuck it. They almost always have loads of PB&J packets, and those things are money for a meal, when you need the extra energy, etc. I made it a mission to load my pockets with PB&J, drink mixes, cappuccino powders, and FRUIT as much as possible.

>>5545055
Chow Hall:

Chow hall, like all this other shit is really based on where you are and what their capabilities are.

The shitty little one near my bricks even has a decent variety. They have breakfast burritos, and lunch burritos in addition to a 'main meal' line, where you can get an omelet or other typical meal based on the time of day. Also; waffle makers.

They always have fresh fruit, a salad bar, etc. The deserts are self serve, you just grab what you want. Most of the time shit is well stocked.

I like to eat healthy, so if you're into that it is possible. The main meal usually has a few options, and one of them is normally some kind of fish or chicken breast. They always have a vegetable and a "starch". The fast food line at our chow hall always has chicken breast sandwiches, but i just get the meat and make my own salads with it. The buffet has hard boiled eggs in the morning, and cottage cheese throughout.

I usually get a to-go tray and fill that bitch up with 15 hard boiled eggs, then I fill the dumb cup they give you with cottage cheese and save it for eating in the barracks. Also, if you're into tea you can steal tons of packets of that shit, along with instant coffee, sugar, etc. Seriously, I don't even go there to eat half the time. I just fill up my to-go tray full of healthy shit, drink some coffee, and leave.

Kind of a long winded post, if you want to know anything else let me know. I've been aboard the USS New York, etc.
