Movie is pretty good, mostly thanks to the director, music, and side cast (main cast is solid, I'm not a Cera hater, but they didn't really sell me).

Comic is eh, I could take it or leave it.

I liked it, but it would've worked better had they split the story into two movies instead of one. "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" for one, "Scott Pilgrim vs. The Universe" for the second. That time could've been used to flesh out the characters more than what we got.

Then again, the first movie didn't do too well, so we might have ended up with only half a story.

>>
Anonymous 03/11/14(Tue)02:55 UTC+1 No.59724413 Report

Movie's good but pales in comparison to the books. I thought the casting was absolutely perfect except for Cera. A big part of the story in the comics is Scott being a massive douchebag, so when the movie tones him down to make him more of a stock, "relatable" main character it takes away a lot of what makes his character arc meaningful.

This whole problem comes from the fact that the movie take place over days instead of months. There was plenty of character depth and genuine good reasons for him to end up with Ramona.

That aside in the comics he never had any moments with Knives that made the relationship look healthy. She was obsessed and he was a dick to her an clearly never cared. In the comics Knives was a rebound who got obsessed because he was her first boyfriend.

The problem of the comic is, unlike the movie in my opinion: He doesn't learn.

He learns a lesson in the movie, in the comic is like "Ramona is gone, gotta try to screw my exes... oh they tell me what an asshole I was... okay... then I guess I´ll just go and... OH nevermind she's back."
>>
Anonymous 03/11/14(Tue)03:27 UTC+1 No.59725521 Report

I love the aesthetic of SP, but I never really felt like the characters develop. The story itself "tells" me that Scott has progressed as a person (earning the "Power of Understanding", etc.) but Scott doesn't seem like he's any different besides being a better fighter.

Seriously life sucks for Neil just because of his friends. They won´t have gigs with him. He´s only Knives boyfriend so she can make Scott jealous and makes fun of him when talking to Scott even though he was always nice. They don´t talk to him, they don´t invite him and he sits alone in his room and starts to smoke.

Great friends. And then Scott calls him "Neil" and suddenly everything is fine again. Thats pretty much how the whole comic resolves.
Scott learned nothing, everyone´s fine with him, arguing characters turn gay - poof. That´s it. No conflict solved on their own.
