/diy/ I am trying to learn how to make a GIF (pic related). I googled this and I keep getting GIMP as the preferred way but it seems like there are higher quality ways to do it. Does /diy/ have any experience in this area?

There aren't a lot of modern tools for really delving into editing animated GIFs. Nowadays, people just convert from video to GIF and call it a day because there's no real need to optimize a GIF from 3MB to 2MB when everyone has broadband.

I used is use an old piece of software called animagic GIF that's probably 10-15 years old. It was lightweight and pretty good, especially if you understood how GIFs are animated. Nowadays, I just load up photoshop. It's a beast and clunky as hell, but it gets the job done since I don't have to worry about shaving precious KB when loading over my 56k modem.

Why the doubt, because it's freeware?

GIMP is **more than** good enough for this.

I had a really shitty way of doing it, but it was reliable. Avidemux 2.5.6 and Adobe Photoshop.
