I'm pretty interested in making a tobacco pipe, but I want to make it out of a solid piece of wood, and I was wondering if I'd be able to use a lit ember to burn out the wood in order to hollow out the bowl and the stem of the pipe. Additionally, I was wondering if I could get any advice on how to pursue this from anyone else that's tried. Pic related, but for simplicity I want to give it a straight draw and let gravity do all of the work hollowing it out.

Buy a block, of briar, that Is sold for making a pipe from. I would suggest one that already has the stem drilled.

Using an ember to burn a bowl is not a good idea. Pipe wood is selected to resist burning as much as possible. Just drill or carve out your bowl.

1) If it's going to be a pipe use Briar root or don't even try.

2) Briar is known for not burning easy, so your method won't work.

3) I don't think anybody has tried to shout 'Fus-Ro-Dah' to a briar root block to convert it on a pipe, that might be something anybody hasn't tried before.

4) Learn how to use a lathe.

drill straight block out
carve out bowl and shape rest of blank
