To those who went to school:

If you could go back in time and prevent yourself from majoring in graphic design to pursue something else, would you do it?
Anonymous 10/16/14(Thu)07:45 UTC+1 No.180747 Report

No, I'd just kick myself in the head for not applying myself and getting a job when I graduated.
Anonymous 10/16/14(Thu)09:54 UTC+1 No.180756 Report

I would however tell myself that I should dive deep into freelance as soon as I finished my studies. I waited too long to feel confident about that line of work.

If given the opportunity to go back to school, I'd like to get a degree in Interior Design. I can do all the hands-on stuff like building shelving, painting walls, installing flooring, picking out fabrics/textiles, etc. but know nothing about the computer programs that are heavily used.

This. Although fuck my school for being unable to get me work, and fuck the economy for crashing right when I graduated.

Yes, I would prevent myself from going to school for GD.

But my situation is probably unique on this board. I didn't get a degree because I wanted to get into graphic design (well, not immediately anyway). I went into it so I could get into Desktop Publishing, which was one of the fastest growing careers back then. I figured if I did well in it, I could always go back to school for my Bachelors. Thank god I was smart enough to start with just an Associate degree. Saved me a lifetime of debt.

But of course DTP folded in the same time frame it was projected to grow. Then a few years later, the Great Recession. Graphic Design is nearly impossible to get into. Everyone I know of in the industry is out of work. Many are FAR better than me with better schooling. I'm doing better at my retail job at Fred Myers than this one guy who schooled at Full Sail. At least I can afford new shoes.

The worst of it is, I find graphic design the most interesting job field of all other fields. I only wish I'd know of its existence as a kid. It's all I would've done instead of sketching/illustration. Just for fun if nothing else.

I'm still going to go for it. I have enough books/magazines/tutorials to keep me studying for at least 2yrs. I might even try freelancing. But I'm a realist and the chances of me being any good with a shit degree from a shitty college that doesn't even teach graphic design anymore (digital design now) without a REAL job in the field under the wing of a professional designer to mentor me is beyond slim. Best I can hope for is to make 15k/20k a yr on the side to supplement my retail pay so I can at least afford to live on my own without a roommate. I'm probably not going to make it in life, so might as well do something I enjoy and try and be the best I can be at it. I don't have much to lose at this point.

This is your life. Live in your world. You're the one who will has to bear yourself every day until you die. Don't get a retard job, get knee-deep into visual arts-design-whatever. It's a wonderful and stimulating world, you never stop learning and personally Mondays are fuckin awesome, I get up in the morning with actual motivation. Fuck that cublicle shit.

Never ever purchase what a graphic school wants you to purchase

they have always deals with stupid suppliers

back in the day they wanted us to use stupid zip drives

since that was more convenient then writing cd's

you know what happened, no one used that shit and it really quickly got outdated

schools let you buy shit you won't need so make sure not to order anything they say. ALso buy it separately (after observing what you actually need)

That's some cyberpunk-looking shit right there
Anonymous 10/31/14(Fri)17:56 UTC+1 No.183027 Report

how good is your work?
Anonymous 10/31/14(Fri)19:59 UTC+1 No.183047 Report

Maybe? I'd definitely would take more programing and business courses.
Anonymous 10/31/14(Fri)20:21 UTC+1 No.183049 Report

zip drives are badass

optical drives are outdated now, and meshnet cloud is the future--but zip drives still look and feel amazing to use
Anonymous 10/31/14(Fri)20:53 UTC+1 No.183053 Report

zip drives are still not outdated and the almost every major hospital still uses them

>almost every major hospital still uses them

srsly? - what the fuck for, propping up bedposts?

Zip drives are/were probably an example of great product branding, (we need a product name to fuck over Syquest here, aha Zip! - to the cash registers!) - but, for the love of christ, there is no excuse whatsoever for using them nowadays, not that they've been made since The Queen of England took the throne.

CDRs killed them outright, and the higher-capacity versions, Jaz! (or Jazz!, or Jizz!? - woteva) were, if anything, even less relaible.

Once had a printer dump 10,000 'finished' full color catalogues on me, after a corrected proof, all missing about a quarter of the layer information (was delivered as PSD, in case font fuckups had to be corrected, etc) - the printer obviously couldn't be arsed waiting 3 hours on the fucking Zip loading the file before hitting Print. Telephone numers/address, all completely missing - client was overjoyed.

Fine things, for their period, but those of you overcome with nostalagia obviously never had to rely on the things - landfill cannot be deep enough for the fuckers, honestly.
