Good First Gun OP 05/25/14(Sun)19:57 UTC+1 No.21318256 Report

Hello kommandos. I am looking to purchase my first gun. I am completely familiar with weapons, and safety as I am an eagle scout (pic related)

Anyway, what would you recommend as a good first fire arm to own?

>I live in NJ
>Im leaning towards a single shot break barrel 12ga
>just a nice simple gun
>barrel converters are neato to

Yea, I'm not looking to get a handgun or any semi automatic rifles. Can anyone recommend a good shotgun that fits my criteria for a decent price (say $150)

No, we are not here to discuss how horrible NJ gun laws are.

>buy mosin for $100
>cut barel
>is now shotgun
Anonymous 05/25/14(Sun)20:00 UTC+1 No.21318275 Report

Well since you live outside of the US, a single shot break action is your best bet, you can also get inserts to shoot pistol and rifle ammo too.
About the price of a nugget too http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/product/6-0129929

New England Firearms

Go to pawn shop with money. They will have an entire wall of them, trust me.
OP 05/25/14(Sun)20:06 UTC+1 No.21318334 Report

I live in the US.
Unless that was an NJ joke that went straight over my head. Sorry.
Anonymous 05/25/14(Sun)20:06 UTC+1 No.21318343 Report

Why don't you just move out of NJ bruh? I mean I get why people stay in California, it's a cool state, but is living in 1 giant suburb really worth it?
OP 05/25/14(Sun)20:07 UTC+1 No.21318353 Report

An Obrez? Not sure about the legality of modifying fire arms in my nanny state.
I was really considering getting a mosin, I read a guide on it and the guns are so old and finicky, there's a lot to look out for. Maybe if I see one at a gun show I'll grab it.
OP 05/25/14(Sun)20:08 UTC+1 No.21318367 Report

Well I either live here or Florida. I'm Cuban, so I have a lot of family in Miami. I'll see if there's any opportunities in employment in PA, I absolutely love PA.
OP 05/25/14(Sun)20:12 UTC+1 No.21318408 Report

I saw a lot of good choices from New England Fire Arms, thanks for the suggestions, anon.
Anonymous 05/25/14(Sun)20:13 UTC+1 No.21318418 Report

You should seriously consider a pump action shotgun. It's a lot more useful for different things than a break action single shot.

I'd check out a mossberg 500 or 590, or an 80s or earlier remington 870 wingmaster if you can find one. Going to spend more than $150, but it'll be way more useful. If that's in your budget, it'd be a solid choice.

If you're set at $150, as another anon said just go to a pawn shop with cash. They'll definitely have some old break actions to look at. Just make sure the barrel is in good shape and it locks up tight.
Anonymous 05/25/14(Sun)20:15 UTC+1 No.21318440 Report

Modifying guns is legal in NJ, especially rifles and shotguns. However, you cannot legally shorten the barrel of a rifle below 16" or a shotgun below 18", as these constitute NFA weapons. NJ doesn't allow citizens to possess such firearms.
Dr Faget 05/25/14(Sun)20:16 UTC+1 No.21318453 Report

Yeah cough up the extra for something more versatile

Barrel converters (I assume you mean the .22 LR ones in particular) are a shit. Just useless they're so inaccurate, even the most wretched shot out Chinese .22 will be better.
Anonymous 05/25/14(Sun)20:17 UTC+1 No.21318466 Report

>Go to pawn shop with money.

Pawn shops in NJ are expressly forbidden from dealing in firearms. It makes finding cheap guns harder.
Anonymous 05/25/14(Sun)20:18 UTC+1 No.21318484 Report

>Pawn shops in NJ are expressly forbidden from dealing in firearms
Holy shit what the fuck
OP 05/25/14(Sun)20:20 UTC+1 No.21318507 Report

Oh fuck. I suspect some faggotry like this would exist
Thanks for the info I will make a mental note of this.
A big motivator for getting a break barrel shotgun is purchasing a barrel converter. They're just cool and I have a weak spot for them. Maybe later down the line I'll grab one.
Well there is an 8 inch rifled 9mm one I'm looking at. That wouldnt be so bad.
Anonymous 05/25/14(Sun)20:28 UTC+1 No.21318592 Report

NJ's firearms laws literally have no boundary on stupidity.

You have no idea.
Anonymous 05/25/14(Sun)20:30 UTC+1 No.21318602 Report

I would say .22 rifle: good to practice on, ammo's cheap, and you can develop good shooting habits that way.
Anonymous 05/25/14(Sun)20:30 UTC+1 No.21318604 Report

For instance, this gun here?

BANNED in NJ. You have to buy it in PA, VA, DE, etc. and sneak it back.

Tragic boating accident, etc.
OP 05/25/14(Sun)20:32 UTC+1 No.21318628 Report

Any stupid laws I should be careful of? I'm filling out my paperwork for my fire arms purchaser card. Do I need to register my fire arms in any way? I know pistols require permits and registration, but a rifle/shotgun I can just simply go and buy one, right?

I know failure to report a stolen gun in 24hrs is a felony.
Anonymous 05/25/14(Sun)20:32 UTC+1 No.21318632 Report

Also, anything but a Saiga is illegal. Every "AK" here is either a Saiga conversion of some sort, or it's an actual AK that somebody had a tragic boating accident with.
OP 05/25/14(Sun)20:33 UTC+1 No.21318649 Report

I can't find a decently priced .22
Not going to lie, I've never been to a gun show and I heard the prices there are absurdly cheap. But around here a simple youth .22 is about $250.

What was the reasoning behind banning this American classic?
Anonymous 05/25/14(Sun)20:34 UTC+1 No.21318655 Report

Rifle registration is voluntary. Obviously, don;t actually do it.
OP 05/25/14(Sun)20:35 UTC+1 No.21318670 Report

My scout master owns an AK, and only has. 2rd mag for it.
Can you tell me more about the accident? Or is this another joke I'm missing? Also how are SKSs. Are they under any stupid restrictions?
Anonymous 05/25/14(Sun)20:36 UTC+1 No.21318684 Report

>I've never been to a gun show and I heard the prices there are absurdly cheap
no, not usually. Gun shows exist so you can see cool stuff in person.
OP 05/25/14(Sun)20:37 UTC+1 No.21318696 Report

So I can buy as many rifles/shotguns as I want, right? No time limit? I know for a handgun I have to get a permit, wait for approcal, wait 30 days, and then use the permit within 30 days.
Anonymous 05/25/14(Sun)20:38 UTC+1 No.21318708 Report

- Long arms of any variety may be purchased with only your FID and Driver's License
- Pistols require a "permit to purchase"
- If you buy a long-arm in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Delaware, etc.. it must be transferred by an FFL (gun store), even if you buy it from a private sale.
- If you go to another state and buy an item on the banned weapons list (http://www.newjerseyhunter.com/forums/77-nj-firearms-id-card-gun-permits/18515-list-banned-firearms.html) or you purchase a handgun out of state (private sale, FFLs **TYPICALLY** will not allow you to purchase handguns as an NJ resident), for fucks sake don't put it in your gun safe. Wrap it up in a t-shirt and hide it in the attic. If you illegally buy an NJ-legal long-arm, nobody will ever know so keeping that one mingling amongst the others is NBD.

That's about it.
OP 05/25/14(Sun)20:38 UTC+1 No.21318712 Report

Convention show etc... Friend told Me he drove 3 hours to one out in PA and there were just a bunch of booths in a convention center, all with people selling random guns. He got a rifle chambered in .308 and 5rd magazine with a good scope for around $130.
OP 05/25/14(Sun)20:40 UTC+1 No.21318726 Report

So if I buy a gun out of state, I have to get it transferred to a gun store in state for pick up? That's fucking gay.
Anonymous 05/25/14(Sun)20:41 UTC+1 No.21318740 Report

>Not going to lie, I've never been to a gun show and I heard the prices there are absurdly cheap. But around here a simple youth .22 is about $250.

Go to gun shows and get disappointed, then stop at Heritage Guild on the way home and buy yourself a gun.

>What was the reasoning behind banning this American classic?

Who knows? The AWB list has no reason or rhyme.

There's no registration, afaik. Not even a "voluntary" one.

That's correct. You can walk in, wait for the NICs check, and then walk out with it.
Anonymous 05/25/14(Sun)20:42 UTC+1 No.21318749 Report

>people selling random guns.

Now, this is technically breaking the law, since any state resident can only sell firearms to other state residents, but this is the kind of stuff you want to do. You can get good deals private sale.
Anonymous 05/25/14(Sun)20:43 UTC+1 No.21318761 Report

No, you don't need to transfer it to an NJ gun store, it just needs to be transferred TO YOU by an FFL. Gun shows have tons and tons of dealers who will gladly do the transfer for cheap.
OP 05/25/14(Sun)20:48 UTC+1 No.21318813 Report

Heritage guild? Never heard of one before.
Anonymous 05/25/14(Sun)20:52 UTC+1 No.21318862 Report

Huge PA gun store you can hit on the way home to NJ from PA gun shows.
Anonymous 05/25/14(Sun)20:53 UTC+1 No.21318875 Report

But as always, if you remember these eight magic words, you can have whatever gun you want in NJ, just don't do something retarded like post them on facebook.

Okay, ready?

"I lost it in a tragic boating accident."

I already know this trick well, being from NJ myself.
OP 05/25/14(Sun)20:55 UTC+1 No.21318889 Report

Interesting. Well I don't think I'm going to buy a gun from out of state, sounds like a hastle, and I don't want to violate the law or be prosecuted for defending my property with an 'illegal' fire arm.

I may go to "Thunder Mountain" a skeet/trap shooting range with plenty of guns.
Anonymous 05/25/14(Sun)20:57 UTC+1 No.21318928 Report

>Well I don't think I'm going to buy a gun from out of state, sounds like a hastle

The FFL transfer takes like 5 minutes, and if you buy the gun from an FFL at a show, then there's no issue at all. It's not that big of a hassle.

> I don't want to violate the law or be prosecuted for defending my property with an 'illegal' fire arm.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, unless it's an illegal handgun.
OP 05/25/14(Sun)20:57 UTC+1 No.21318930 Report

What's the backstory of this "tragic boating accident"

Its been referenced in this thread 3 or 4 times, and I have no idea what anyone's taking about. I don't spend much time on/k/, am i a newfag missing an Inside joke? Or did a tragic boating accident occur in NJ
OP 05/25/14(Sun)20:59 UTC+1 No.21318948 Report

Alright, that's reassuring and brings another option back onto the table.
Anonymous 05/25/14(Sun)20:59 UTC+1 No.21318949 Report

As a PA resident, there are many better places to move. We are a very average state with awful welfare queens in the cities, and awful fudds thirty minutes-one hour out of the cities.
Anonymous 05/25/14(Sun)21:03 UTC+1 No.21319004 Report

Bro buy a regular pump shotgun for crist sakes. Im from PA, Go buy mossberg 500 or maverick 88.
Anonymous 05/25/14(Sun)21:04 UTC+1 No.21319012 Report

>What's the backstory of this "tragic boating accident"

It's what you say when you have guns that you don't want people to know about, especially the rozzers.

It's more than an option, it's a way of life. NJ prohibits gun shows, so it's nice to go and enjoy them.
OP 05/25/14(Sun)21:09 UTC+1 No.21319069 Report

I don't want to leave the tri state area. I prefer a more rural environment also. The houses you could get for $100,000 compared to NJ are unreal.

I'll get one later, just looking for a good first.

Thanks for the info.

Aight, js on cheaper than dirt i saw some monte carlo sing shot break action shotguns for 100 plus shipping so 130 or less, you should be able to find a nice single shot. good luck on your hunt comrade and may Jersey not fuck with your funs. PS i used to live in trenton, it was hell.

Buying handguns outside of the state you live in is illegal, period. That's federal law too, nothing to do with NJ. You're not going to find an FFL that will do that anywhere.

What the fuck, that's insane.

Anyone have any opinions on the G2 contender? It's a weapon I may buy later.I may buy both the pistol and rifle stock with several different barrels. (I have a boner for break barrel weapons)
Anonymous 05/25/14(Sun)23:17 UTC+1 No.21320552 Report

I hope everyone remembers what we all agreed to when they were doing this shit. None of us would ever purchase or support Cheaper Than Dirt ever again.

Do everyone a favor, request that they send you their magazine in the mail and when it arrives toss it in the trash or burn it. Not only will you not be giving them business but you will be eating their profit in the cost to make and ship their little book.

> I am an eagle scout

Hey there OP! I got my Eagle back in 85'. Didn't know Boy Scouts still existed.

Check out H&R Handi-Rifle. It's a combo gun that chambers in all the colors of the rainbow. (whatever your heart desires) They also come with a shotgun barrel (your choice in ga.) I recommend this rig to all new shooters if you live in NJ. or not. The handi-rifle line aren't bad shooters and it's a new gun. Start with a new gun like this and then move on to all the milsurps fellow /K/ bros are gonna recommend.
