Can someone scan and convert to digital format Darcoville's Cat by Alexander Theroux?
Compiling the pages from pictures would be great too.

Just buy it, it's a great book. Very underrated novel, for those who like Pynchon, DFW, Barth etc. really recommended. Also, never seen a thread on Theroux here, /lit/ would really like him (and /r9k/ to an extent too).

Have you read "Laura Warholic"? It's strange his works get so little notice.
Anonymous 06/25/14(Wed)20:58 UTC+1 No.5057858 Report

I've been hoping for someone to do it too. I would if it wasn't so damn long. Even 300 pages of scanning gets too tedious to want to continue, 750+ would be hell unless you had special equipment.
Anonymous 06/25/14(Wed)21:04 UTC+1 No.5057879 Report

I can probably do this fairly easily, it's on the third floor, and have done other books, and can do other books, but I don't have the time to compile them correctly. I've got several digitized volumes just waiting to be collated, but I don't have the time. Can lit help?
Anonymous 06/25/14(Wed)21:07 UTC+1 No.5057892 Report

I can help you with that if you don't want to do it - I use ScanTailor to clean them up and then make a pdf with Adobe Acrobat. The file size won't be too enormous because ScanTailor is damn good at keeping things clean.
Anonymous 06/25/14(Wed)21:08 UTC+1 No.5057893 Report

I read Theroux's short biography of Al Capp and it got me interested in his writing. I hear he wrote a book about rock lyrics that got some people upset, did any of you anons read it?
Anonymous 06/25/14(Wed)21:15 UTC+1 No.5057925 Report

So if I give you several hundred uncropped JPGs of the pages, can you check for missing pages, crop, and rename? And how would I give them to you?
I now have the book on my desk.
Anonymous 06/25/14(Wed)21:18 UTC+1 No.5057935 Report

I wouldn't go with JPGs, do TIFF files if you can for less loss. If you can choose DPI do at least 300.

But yeah, ScanTailor does the cropping, renaming, I'll flip through to find missing pages and then compile it to a PDF.

anonfiles.com, zip the pages into one zip and upload them

I can do this with the others you wanted collated too, if you want - it's really not much work on my side. What kind of books are they?
Anonymous 06/25/14(Wed)21:22 UTC+1 No.5057953 Report

also thank you a ton anon for being willing to scan this, you're making at the least the OP and me very happy people
Anonymous 06/25/14(Wed)21:31 UTC+1 No.5057991 Report

I normally do 600ppi tiffs from the raw capture. I can give you tiffs but your PDF will be huge if you make it from them without chopping them down. I don't know scantailor, I use capture one for capture and processing. I have a naming system down that I'm picky about.
I'm tying to build a collection of high resolution first editions. Printed stuff like this one don't really warrant the hi res, though. Other stuff in my to process queue is an autobiography by Erte, a book about the women of the Salons of the fin de siecle (really into that lately, a lot!), and a book about childrens literature from around that time, and some nice Aubrey Beardsley volumes, some old erotica. Other stuff I don't remember that's just sitting there unprocessed.
I really want to start a secret library of this stuff, high res of rare volumes, first editions, etc. Some sort of online secret library. I've already got a twitter started that I don't tag or advertise or anything that no one has seen. It's fun but the time I have to invest is limited. And how would an online secret library work?
I'll try to shoot this tomorrow or Friday and post here when I'm done/
Anonymous 06/25/14(Wed)21:35 UTC+1 No.5058018 Report

OK, that's page one...kidding, I'll do better in the next few days.
Anonymous 06/25/14(Wed)21:39 UTC+1 No.5058044 Report

Yeah, ScanTailor lets me change DPI if it seems like it'll be too crazy, but I thought it's best to start out large just in case. As long as the naming system puts them in correct page order, it'll work out for combining.

I was mostly interested in high res for eventual OCRing and conversion to epub, since a lot of OCR software wants smooth big DPI.

Your work would probably really be appreciated on Bibliotik, the private ebook torrent tracker. And you inspire me to get on my own scanning work for the day (doing The Passive Vampire by Gherasim Luca).
Anonymous 06/25/14(Wed)21:48 UTC+1 No.5058092 Report

I'll have to look into ScanTailor more. I don't know how to convert to epub but that's been on my list to learn. I usually end with three folders, one of the raw capture/scans/ one of the high res processed tiffs, and one of the lower res, postable, JPGs.
I don't know anything about Bibliotik, but now I really want to. I've got a lot of access to some cool stuff and ability to image it, and why should it sit unseen?
Thank you, anon, for the encouragement.
Anonymous 06/25/14(Wed)22:23 UTC+1 No.5058307 Report

Haha, I didn't not believe you, just wanted to skip the middle step. I suppose I'll post it back here for OP.

I hope the scanning guy sees, so he doesn't have to scan such a doorstopper now.

Anonymous 06/25/14(Wed)23:13 UTC+1 No.5058521 Report

there's the mobi for anyone coming to the thread later on!

It's been around for a little while, since the actual book is so crazy out of print.
Anonymous 06/25/14(Wed)23:14 UTC+1 No.5058525 Report

I deeply appreciate every effort
That will be great

The book is great. It is the only work I read, though. It seem to be not edited, problem being the antisemitic, misogynist, and various other kind of jokes, but errors are few and book is easily readable. Of course, dictionary is needed. I just loved the prose, the wit, the graver parts, and the whole theme of loneliness.

It should be on top of your 21c book to read list.
Figget 06/25/14(Wed)23:16 UTC+1 No.5058529 Report

seriously, and the prices that people want for it is just ridicules

got it, btw, thanks, i'm off to read now take care guys, hope you enjoy
