On a scale from Martin to Tolkien, where is Wheel of Time?

>On a scale from shit to shit
I...I don't understand.

So I can deduce from your response that WoT is pretty great?

Much more lively and modern than Tolkien. Also much more adult in terms of nudity and violence. The story, of course, is much more commercially oriented...which is not really a bad thing in terms of readability. Martin is better though, hands down. Jordan's shit isn't bad at all though. The second book is the masterpiece in my opinion.

I'm only four books in, but I find it quite enjoyable. The narrative pace is very slow, but the worldbuilding is pretty good...Certainly better than Martin's lazy world...But its not going to change your life or anything...

More like Tolkien, but not in a good way.

Books 4 and 12 are fantastic.

Books 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6are good.

Books 7, 11 and 13 are okay.

Book 14 isn't very good.

Books 8 and 9 are bad.

Book 10 is a travesty.

I'd put 2 higher and 12 lower, but I pretty much agree with this.

OP: it's more Tolkien-y by far. Prose is better than Martin's, but Martin is a far better storyteller and can actually create interesting characters and character conflicts. Prose is too purple most of the time.

There's no stakes in the novels. It all feels very artificial.

my man, I totally agree 12 is one of the best but people rarely agree. It works because it actually tells a story from start to finish - Rand becoming evil, Rand learning why not to be evil.

Almost to Tolkien in terms of character personality. You really can't empathise with anyone from the LotR books or WoT.

>I'M JUST A HOBBIT; I DON'T WANT TO GO ON A BIG ADVENTURE WITH MAGICAL SWORDS AND RINGS

>I'M JUST A SHIT FARMER IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE. I DON'T WANT TO GO ON AN ADVENTURE WITH A HOT MAGICAL CHICK, MY FRIENDS, AND BE A HERO

At least you can understand the motivations behind the characters in Martin's books.

Wheel of Time feels more like Tolkien than Martin to me, but more readable than Tolkien.

Reading Martin and Tolkien really disinterested me, I couldn't stop daydreaming in the middle of them for some reason. Just started Wheel of Time, though, only a couple hundred pages in. I can definitely see more of the Tolkien similarity but I also see a more developed grander plot than a typical adventure fantasy. Although I also get the impression that the characters are as flat as Tolkien's (as others have said). I will also say that only a select few of Martin's characters avoid being flat as well.

What is better (vjre interesting, more atmospheric, etc): Malazan Book of the Fallen or WoT?
