What do you guys think Carson Wells' job was in this book? When I watched the movie I figured he was some kind of shady private detective, but after reading the book its pretty clear he's some kind of criminal. After all, he has ties to Chigurh, so he's probably not a detective or bountry hunter. So what is it? Hitman? Enforcer? Fixer? What is he known as to the underworld? He calls himself a 'day trader', whatever that implies. Even if he only dabbles in the type of stuff we see him do in the story, what does he do the rest of the time? I was also a bit confused because he refers to himself as having been Special Forces, but then later the cops say that he was 'regular army'. Thoughts?

>Day trading is speculation in securities, specifically buying and selling financial instruments within the same trading day, such that all positions are usually closed before the market close for the trading day.

It's a cute way of saying that he was supposed to wrap up Chigurh's lose ends

If i were him in that scene, i would have thrust myself with one leg from the stairs and kicked him in the face with the other.

I think it was more of a cute way to say he's not a flow blown hitman like Chigurh.

Either way, I know what he was hired to do in the story, but what is his profession?

No one?

He's CIA. As a "day trader" he's working job to job on contract, not as a regular employee

Which movie character was a Colonel in the Green Berets? Also a bunch of US special forces were regular army. CIA usually went cover by being Army anyway.

His profession is fucking with people for the US government.

I've always been fascinated by Chigurh. Was he ex-military or something?

Chigurh worked for the CIA also, like Wells they had been "travelling the same path" but Wells gave up the journey, whereas Chigurh decided to determine if he could change reality by force of will, and so allowed himself to be arrested.

He's what we call a handler. This would be a liaison to syndicates or independent and, like the poster above stated, employed to clean up loose ends. Hitmen are erroneously referred to as 'Fixers'. Carson Wells was a fixer.

"travelling the same path"

In Chigurh's wake.

He's a hitman like Chigurh who has worked with Chigurh in the past. He gets called in to take care of Chigurh after he goes off the rails, and his military background just goes to cement his legitimacy as a hitman. His day job is as a day trader, which I'm taking to mean he works in the stock market and this hitman thing is now more part-time for him.
