And it's not just me- I've seen a lot of writing on /lit/ that's as good or better than some of the stuff I see on the shelves.

What breaks did those writers get that we didn't?

Published writers usually have good networks - they are children of agents (that Eragon kid), most of the time the author got an English degree and got their stuff published via their professor's network (I think Jonathan Safran Foer is an example).

The ones without network are just way, way more persistent than the average /lit/izen. I guess in the average "rate my shit" thread it's the third of fourth work of the anon, while people like Tao Lin just keep on churning out shit every day.
