I think almost every shmup is /m/.

One of my personal favorites is Alpha Mission 2 on the Neo-Geo.

Super Aleste / Space Thunderforce on the SNES. I can't think of a single other shoot-em-up anywhere close to its release that had such an extensive weapon / power-up system.

You had about seven or eight different weapons, and their effects change as the weapon levels up. That's a pretty impressive selection of weapons as-is, but you can also press the shoulder buttons to toggle an alt fire mode for each weapon; some weapons, like the multiple shot, have more than one alt mode, too.

The Aleste series in general is pretty great, though.

Alltynex games (all 3) and Tyrian are out on Steam. The former got localization funding via KS.

Triggerheart Exelica is a mecha musume shmup for Dreamcast and 360. One of the features of the game is the anchor weapon, which lets you drag enemies out of the sky and use them as an improvised club or bullet shield.

It's a great game but I love Rayforce for some of the neat stuff they did with the background, like where you can shoot off a large portion of an aerial base and watch it drop to the ground below. Raystorm
Otomedius Complex
Ikaruga
Strikers 1942
Darius Series
Bangai-O

I'm pretty sure there's more I've played; but can't remember the names of.

One in particular I can't recall is an old Super Nintendo game in which both players play as F-14-like aircraft that could fuse with each other (one over the other, and side-by-side); changing up the attack the second player can do while the main focuses on dodging and using their specials. Enemies were the typical Raiden-esque enemies.

So here's some comments from shit I've got/played

Crimzon Clover World Ignition - great game, go buy it, it's really fucking solid

Ikaruga - it's fucking Ikaruga and it still looks pretty and pretentious

Jamestown - find yourself three friends and go to town, this game is a solid solo experience but gets batshit insane when played as the cooperative shmup it was designed to be

Ethervapor - solid, flashy, kinda gimmicky doujin shooter, can't go wrong here.

Sine Mora - well it's a Grasshopper-produced game and it has a mindfuckish narrative... shame that it's kinda half baked in terms of gameplay execution. Really wanted to like this game, but it ends up feeling imbalanced outside of the story mode.

Reflex - been playing the old trial release and it's pretty good, but I keep kinda avoiding actually purchasing this one since in stills it doesn't exactly sell itself well, even though in actual gameplay it's pretty sweet and forms the middle act of a pretty nifty trilogy of games which'll hit Steam in some amount of time. Personally I'm more hyped for Kamui which struck me as the more visually appealing of the three Alltynex games (which is weird because it's the oldest of the three and Alltynex 2nd isn't so much sabotaged by some HURR THEY MOVED TO POLYGONS AND BETRAYED SPRITES as it is something feeling half baked about the visual direction, considering the Edelweiss shmup games all manage to make 3D shmupping look really fucking good)

As per emulation, there used to be a nice MAME distribution optimized for shmups, with a pack of games attached. Though I think in one of those same bundles was malware or some shit, you gotta understand that pre-/vg/ the world of "shmup general" outside of /jp/ was a hostile place full of enforced 1cc faggotry.

1cc - 1 credit clear.

AKA finishing the game in a single credit, contrast with credit feeding wherein every time you die out you just slam more money into the machine and keep on playing like a scrublord.

It's one of those things you're supposed to naturally strive towards but some people will try and shit on your idea of fun by telling you any other way of playing is objectively wrong. Again, I would like to point out that the old days of talking shmups with anyone outside of /jp/ (or /m/, because at least here we know better! There's some free indie shmups.

Kenta Cho/ABA Games made a bunch of PC games which are all available for free from his site.
http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~cs8k-cyu/games/index.html#windows

Don't miss out on Gunroar just because it gets lumped in with the "other games" list. It's pretty good. And Tumiki Fighters is charming. I guess rRootage is interesting because he takes the reflection mechanics from unique shmups Ikaruga, Giga Wing and Psyvariar and uses them in a pure boss rush, bullet patterns game. (Of those three Ikaruga is probably the most unique because it's secretly a puzzle game masquerading as a shmup) also I guess there's a more normal bomb mode in rRootage.

Kenta Cho games are fun as hell.
Bit predictable in a fashion though, since all his games are themed around a design of procedural generation. Yet also unpredictable, because procedural generation merely dictates the parameters of what can be created, not the actual content created.

In other words, one guy and a theme, taken to quite an extreme.

most thread of topics just tend to get ignored.

I recently get back to Outzone (set2) trying to get 400% (my best is around 290%) and now that i got all the sound samples working i am close to finish my first 1CC on vimana (set2) maybe the most underrated Toaplan game ever still can't understand the general "meh" given to this game.
yeah it not as flashy as other titles like dogyuun or tatsujinoh but it full of awesome idea like the charge shoot (seen in many others games after that), the bomb/shield system, the enemies that push you to the bottom of the screen. secret boss, the underground elevators/doors. that awesome organic like stage, the number of shots on screen or the final boss who shoot you from the back.

and that fucking music (even if lacking a theme or variation to indicate you are fighting a boss) is just god tier.
i uploaded the score if someone is interested in this masterpiece of videogames music (track 01 to 08).

My beef with writing out the plots for a shmups megacrossover is that having facetime for faceless, nameless "main pilots" adds to the bloat.

ie, Raiden.

I have an huge fondness for Giga Wing because it's this one Bullet Hell I've managed to 1cc on some random arcade.

>tfw a father and his young son were my audience while I battled the (fake) final boss

I could never beat any shmup with one credit again after this. It's totally different with an emulator. When you don't have money on the line, you don't play as good.

Is it worth getting a nice arcade stick for PC if I'm emulating?

idk, I've used keyboard a lot of the time.

I use C for shoot and looking at it, the paint for the letter's completely worn off. Hmm.

Anyways it's up to preference, for some things I do plug in a PS2 controller, but for button mashy shmups it doesn't feel right and I go back to keyboard.

If an arcade stick is something you want to have, go for it. Sounds like fun to me.

Did Space Invaders Infinity Gene ever get ported over to Android?

It was one of the only reasons I held onto my iPod Touch for the longest time.

Was there any OST or rip of Geppy X? I can't get enough of Jam Project.

Anyways, I give my vote to Thunder Force V. Good keytar, good bosses (props to the A3), and good weapon selection, even though it's mostly staples from the old games.
