How an Ultraman series written by Gen Urobuchi would be?

>There would be different Ultramen with different ideals fighting each other
>Members of the Earth attack team would die regularly
>Idealistic MC facing the harsh realities of being a hero
>Obligatory character who wants to save the world through utilitarian means (probably the Commander of the deffense team)

Really? I recall most of his works being stupidly popular; Phantom wasn't bad, Madoka is still selling like crack cocaine, Fate/Zero is 'Fate/Stay Night, but BETTER' and Gaim is the best Kamen Rider to come along since Double.

I don't get the hateboner for him. Usually, his name on a project is enough for me to take a second look; I only jump ship once he stops writing.

Slightly off topic, but is the 2004 film a good place to start with the franchise? The only other Ultra show I've seen is Ultra Q (bought the DVD) but I'm not as keen as to watch the other shows from that era, though I know they're thematically similar.

Also the Zero movie trilogy (Ultra Galaxy Legend, Ultraman Zero, Ultraman Saga), the original Ultraman and Ultraseven.

Now, as for series. Putting on the Sentai/KR hat for a minute, I get the impression that Nexus is comparable to Agito in that it's mystery and story-driven, while Moebius is comparable to Gokaiger in that it's light-and-fun Anniversary Adventures. Is that correct?

It's pretty awesome. It's the first and only tokusatsu series Chiaki Konaka has written. The guy needs to come back.

It adheres to the episodic mentality of past Ultraman shows while still having soft arcs. You get two Ultraman characters (Agul and Gaia) who have different views on stuff. Agul wants to protect earth itself, doesn't give two shits about humans, Gaia wants to protect all living beings. There's even an awesome midseries clash between the two that leads to a power up for Gaia later on.

Agul's human host has an arc where his hot piece of ass is trying to figure out why he's such a stick in the mud. Gamu (Gaia)'s character arc involves him going from an idealistic young kid ready to fight having to understand what it actually means to be a soldier. Definite War in the Pocket vibes in that respect.

You've got a cool bunch of side characters like a news crew that eventually play an importantish role as well as Garo's daddy and Kogami being top brass in the organization Gamu works with.

Gaia is pretty much the first toku to do arc heavy stuff. It's not super serialized, but it does arcs in a stronger and more visible fashion than had ever been done before. A lot of Japanese toku fans actually consider Gaia and B-Fighter to be the templates for early Heisei Kamen Rider - arcs and drama, essentially.

Anonymous 07/22/14(Tue)05:22 UTC+1 No.11112842 Report

I remember people asking about Nexus a while ago, here's something I found:

The Ultraman Nexus History File
The Ultra N project was intended to begin and be the series aired during the time frame Cosmos ran, but it wasn't finished in time.
Ultra N Project was split into three phases, NOA Nostalgia, NEXT Evolution, and NEXUS Bond.
Noa appeared in October 2003 in magazines and then stage shows.
Nexus was intended to be aired during 2004, but MBS yanked its time slot and gave it to a popular anime. (popular opinion is Fullmetal Alchemist as that series aired in the time slot all heisei Ultra series had up to that time)
Because of the time frame yanking, Nexus aired around the time that NEXT was released, apparently throwing off a dynamic that Tsburaya was planning.
NEXT bombed, making 2 million dollars off a 10 million budget
Almost as soon as it began airing, Nexus' ratings took a hit. (kids don't want to wake up to watch a drama like that)
Toy sales for Nexus took a 60% drop when compared to Cosmos
Bandai approached Tsuburaya at around episode 25 and dropped the idea that they should make Nexus a lighter show. The staff and cast all discussed this and thought it would be betraying the fans that did stick it out, so Tsuburaya came to the decision that the show would end early to make way for a lighter series.
Rather than start airing commercials for the next series at around three weeks before it started, commercials for Ultraman Max began airing a full twelve weeks before it aired.
The entire Ultra N Project was deemed a failure because none of the products really made a huge return for Tsuburaya.

>>11112842
I wonder if it would have done any better if MBS hadn't fucked with their timeslot.

But yeah, what happened has happened. Ending it early was probably for the best since changing the show wouldn't have saved it.
