Should I watch... Valvrave The Liberator (Part II)? axen 07/22/14(Tue)03:19 UTC+1 No.11112231 Report

So I do this thing where I skim the first two eps of anime to tell if I want to keep watching them. Having seen the first season of Valvrave, I only gave the second season one episode worth of fast viewing to win me over. It failed to do so and so time flew by. I never saw any compelling threads in its favor here on /m/ nor did I hear about any rage about it on the other meme or social sites.

But recently I decided to watch just the final 2 eps of the series to eliminate any "What if this show was really good?!" notions. I though the ending was pretty damn satisfying for a tale about mech piloting vampires vs space nazis but I am still wondering if it would be worth the time to go back and watch the missing nine intermediary episodes. The finale gave me an idea of what I missed, including some buzz killers ( They killed of Dog and the short psycho annoying brat somehow lives to the final ep!! ), but hey, maybe some amazing sh@t went down the finale didn't mention?

Anyone think this is a show to revisit?

Your viewing methods are bizzare.

If you're not put off by the first season or the ending of the second, just watch the episodes in between. If nothing else, you'll get more Kirschbaums.

If you watched the first, and the end, you might as well watch the middle. The second season isn't as liked as the first (less wacky melodrama, and more serious wacky melodrama) but if you liked the end might as well finish it off. Nothing really amazing but Marie, Thunder and Jewbro went down like champs, and waifu wars on the moon is funny

At the same time it does have a lot of useless eps, and haruto being indecisive about getting into the robot which you could probably do without.

Yes, around episode 20-22. It's really obvious since S1. The problem is it took them too long until shit happens. Basically the ruling Illuminati Jews decided it's enough playing and completely stomped down the renegade Youth Jews, militarily and politically. After that, it's the resolution and then the finale.

S1 deals primarily on the loss and persistence of innocence, consistently represented by Haruto being fucked up over and over, every time he thought he had something to cling into. To the consequence of S1, S2 deals primarily with death and struggle against predetermined fate. Again, Haruto is its representative. He is terrorized by two choices (fight or surrender) each leading to the same ends: His doom. There is no way the kids could win against 'that something' from eps. 12. Second season is portrayed too dramatically, it's annoying and draggy. In my opinion the finale makes up for it though.

Except Shoko, maybe.

I honestly think that they should give a few more episodes to depict what happens after Haruto's death, since his death and Cain gave the students new momentum to take power. It's really annoying to watch the ending with a doomed kid sacrifice himself like Jesus. It's like they're teaching our kids to struggle and die heroically or something, since he was, at the beginning, supposed to be your usual normal pansy kid for self-inserting. 0079 Amuro was better, since he went into PTSD and became a coward later (for a moment in Zeta). Good thing there was Bright Noa as the adult figure.

Frankly, Haruto's death made the show a whole lot better for me. The ending of the series is incredibly, incredibly hilarious, and it crosses the line into really dark tragicomedy when you realize that Haruto basically failed at everything he tried to do, and a lot of people died out of hand.

I mean, Valvrave's big resolution to the conflict between the humans and the Magius has the humans form torch-wielding mobs and murder everyone even suspected of being a Magius. Then you have breathtakingly cynical moments like the Royalists going:

> "L-Elf is giving us a list of people who might be Magius!"
> "Is the data dependable? I mean, we only really have his word for it."
> "Eh, fuck it. Most of those people will be up against the wall when the revolution comes, anyway. Let's ride the wave of hysteria and kill everyone who looks at us funny!"

And they DO, and it's amazing.

I think one of the vampires literally went:

> "What, they killed that guy? He had nothing to do with us!"

...then another guy goes:

> "It doesn't matter, they're killing fucking *everybody*."

Anonymous 07/22/14(Tue)11:44 UTC+1 No.11113703 Report

There were good and bad things about the final.

The rushing pacing was bad, even if supplemental material wrap it up (Undertaker, the manga spin off focused A-drei and the CD drama and audio drama which handled Shoko, A-drei, L-Elf and Saki after the end nicely).

It needed at least more one episode to make it a good finale. L-Elf's cutting Mirko's throat on screen was very satisfying moment, but the last episode was underwhelming in comparison.

His death was necessary to cause an impact in L-Elf, just as Lieselotte. The two of them weren't just compared purposelessly, they were compared because they were the people who impacted in L-Elf's life and changed him. Haruto was meant to be someone who would burned out fast. L-Elf was the lasting rock but he was embittered thanks to Cain.

Episode 23 was good in general. Characters interact and do flashy shit, gets team work and gets stuff done.

When we get into episode 24, things get messy.

Cain dying to Haruto and L-Elf was a good idea, although the rushed pacing made it badly executed, for example.
The panic and witch hunt angle was also good.

Most of the events suffered from the fact they had very little time to display them in general.

Actually it was terrible and it really pulled through how worthless Haruto truly was as well as how much the writers hated him, might as well say that Shinn losing to Kira in GSD was good.

>The panic and witch hunt angle was also good.

Not really.

That was actually the worst part of the episode since Cain and Haruto virtually had no sort of tension or rivalry against one another to begin with and it seems that the only reason they were fighting was because he was the badguy. L-Elf taking him over was also bad because it cemented how useless Haruto really was in the end.

That makes no sense, especially since they had come to some begrudging agreement in episode 22, him dying really served no purpose other than to induce some cheap drama which doesn't do anything since the writers did't even do anything with either character to make it convincing enough.

Aesthetic judgement is always subjective, no matter how much you want it within the show itself. Some like it, some don't. I like it because it's consistent with the 'freedom from' theme. The show concludes itself with the mark of immortality, the ultimate liberation towards fate and death itself. I can agree that it could be better executed, but I was satisfied at least. You can see shows which is deliciously executed, but in purpose dwindled, elusively repetitive (pretending to give new things), or even change its theme completely out of nowhere. Valvrave was dragging, but it's really stubborn.

Not him and I don't really want to argue over whether Haruto did much on his own or not since I don't care, but in a show about body-swapping that allows mixing skills by doing so it's only kind of natural for the eventual outcome to be body-swapping the two main leads to combine their skills: in this case, L-Elf's greater reflexes etc. with Haruto's ability to pilot the Valvrave in the first place. A better show would have built up this point more, but the ground work was still there to some degree regardless.
