So it's an automatic with a clutch?

Or what's going on here?
>>
Anonymous 06/16/14(Mon)10:35 UTC+1 No.10493729 Report

Looks like a drag car. It's a manual with a specific kind of transmission, I'm not completely sure, though.

Automatic.

Drag car a presume, going from manual to automatic. That is a clutch pedal too (for the moron who keeps telling us it's the e-brake). The e-brake pedal is left of it.

Now that we are talking about this stuff

Why don't they make a car with a traditional manual gearbox but instead of a clutch assembly fit a torque converter in it's place?

Oh yeah sorry, the one behind the steering wheel escaped my eye.

Maybe I can't count, but at least I can google faggots. It's a manual with a "vertical gate" shifter (like a hurst v-gate 2). The T-handle is the actual gear selector, pull the little handle and row the selector for 3-2 and 2-1 downshift, the little nub on the back is reverse.

Sort of like

This. Forward and back both shift up with the little lever free and shift down if you hold it while shifting. Assuming it's a dog box you don't need the clutch on upshifts, but you still need it to launch and downshift.

Thats how some of the first autos were, but they were inefficient. Rev matching and gear changes were also tricky so people didn't like them. Im sure if one was made with modern technology it could actually be pretty sweet

If you still have to rev match and move the shifting lever in a H-pattern, I would call it a manual yes
>>
Anonymous 06/17/14(Tue)23:52 UTC+1 No.10503177 Report

not likely here, but some drag racers used automatic transmissions with clutches instead of torque converters before aftermarket high stall converters were readily available.

Anonymous 06/18/14(Wed)00:04 UTC+1 No.10503203 Report

>>10495539

Yeah, he should have.

But all things considered, when you add up that the Monte could've been a fresh build he wasn't used to yet, it may have only had ~500hp and still been heavier, and the Viper driver could have had more experience driving.

I've heard of that. I love the idea of an infinite adjustable stall on a th400. Too bad you'd eat clutches like Europeans eat dick
>>
Anonymous 06/18/14(Wed)00:16 UTC+1 No.10503245 Report

>>10503236

it ruined both the clutches and the transmission clutch packs and other components in short order due to the immense shock loads. the clutch was only used for taking off and the transmission was shifted with the clutch fully engaged. modern drag race torque converters are vastly superior since you can store kinetic energy at the line up to a very high stall RPM.

his dumb ass was running slicks, that's a pretty significant disadvantage given the road conditions.

also, the truck was keeping up with both of them just fine. So I think the better question would be what the fuck is under the truck's hood

If they were keeping it thematically appropriate, he's probably got a close ratio T10 4 speed, which would have a pretty steep 1st gear.

Also dat v10 torks
>>
Anonymous 06/18/14(Wed)18:03 UTC+1 No.10507871 Report

>>10493888
Close, but no. You still row back and forth, but you don't have to row side to side through the gates. It's supposed to save you time on the 2-3 shift.
>>
Anonymous 06/18/14(Wed)18:19 UTC+1 No.10507943 Report

>>10507864

Most T10 4 speeds do not have that tall of a 1st gear. Most are 2.xx ratio. You typically want a final drive ratio no greater than 9.0-9.5 in 1st gear in a car like that. With a 4.10 rear gear and the common Muncie 2.20 1st gear that would be 9.2 final ratio.

Yeah, the "good" T10 is 2.43/1.61/1.23/1.00

The Viper's T56 is 2.66/1.78/1.30/1.00/0.74/0.50
And the Viper usually has a 3.06 rear gear.

The viper's got a slightly shorter 1st gear but a much taller rear gear, so it would really need a bunch of extra v-10 torque to pull ahead off the line.

Although now that I rewatch the scene, it looks like our intrepid hero gets a really shitty launch, and overdoes it with tons of wheelspin.

Or it could just be MOOVIE MAGIK but c'mon, they wouldn't do that to us, right?
