The other 6 cars in front of Tony leisurely avoided Mr. Ward by staying inside. They all managed to slow down under caution conditions to a safe speed without 'revving' to turn in low traction conditions.

Tony knew it was a caution lap, he caused the incident. He knew he could stay inside, all the other drivers ahead of him were doing it.

So for what reason (under caution) did he go up high? To fuck with him?

Stewart could have easily missed him in all of that dark clothing, especially considering it looks like the blue car was right in front of him as they came around the turn.

No, normally it'll turn left. Unless there's a body wrapped around your right rear, in which case the left rear will gain more traction and rotate the car to the right. As well as deforming and kicking up some dirt, which can be seen in the video.

I don't see Ward slipping, I see him trying to dive out of the way when Stewart gooses the throttle. This would have rotated Stewarts car to the left and up the bank of the track, meaning that if Ward were within a few feet of the car's predicted position he would then be directly in its path.

This is a man who has just taken a large sidestep with his left leg, trying to get out of the way. The right leg is bent accordingly, pushing off to continue moving left after the panicked sidestep. As much as you'll hear from internet detectives about how slippery a dirt track is, at this point in the race night it's got tons of rubber laid down in the corners and he would have no trouble moving about. Even if he had perfectly calculated Stewart's trajectory, Stewart goosing the throttle changed the game.

Anonymous 08/11/14(Mon)20:16 UTC+1 No.10868407 Report

I am at local dirt tracks usually 2 times a week, and I see 410 sprint cars usually once a month. Stewart goosed the throttle right as was closing on on Ward. There is no doubt about that. Look how slow number 45 is going. Stewart is going much faster. Infact, there is no attempt at him slowing down his car. The only thing slowing it down is the fact that there is a human body under the tire.

There is no question about it, Stewart juiced the throttle as he was coming up to Ward. Did he mean to run him over? Probably not. His intentions were probably to slig clay/dirt at Ward to intimidate him.

Its sad to see Stewart-dones trying to defend him.

I've been in and around dirt track sprints and midgets since the mid-60's, and I've come to much the same conclusion. Sure, there's no doubt that Ward was being a complete jackass by running down on the track, but on the other hand if there were a more level-headed driver (read: one behaving as you should during a caution, and not trying a fly-by and growl) in Stewart's position then everyone would have gone home alive. In some ways, I feel the most for Stewart. He alone knows what was going through his head in the time before coming back around to Ward's position, but I'm pretty sure among those thoughts were plans to show this kid who's boss. I'm pretty sure he's not a total sociopath, so that anguish is going to be a heavy burden for the rest of his days.

why do people keep saying that stewart hit the gas?
the 45 hit the gas after he passed ward (after ward also leapt in front of him)/ you see the car wiggle a little, and it line up perfectly with the audio, but i cannot see or hear any evidence the stewart did the same.

>>10868397
you may be right about that. he just looks like he's off balance to me.
the video doesn't clearly show what happened. it only shows a split second before the impact.

i don't even know why stewart would even be phased by this. he never touched the guy. stewart was unaffected, other than him jumping in front of his car.
it looks like stewart was going faster than the 45, but not a dangerous speed, assuming there's not a guy standing in the track trying to jump in front of your car. it looks like ward miss times his jump, slips a little and cannot get out of the way.

Stewart is a Nascar driver too. He should have the most level head out of anyone in that field of drivers. If he gets wrecked, its nothing to him. Hes not out any money or time. Dirt racing is nothing more than a fun hobby for him. For others, like Ward, dirt racing is your job. You don't have time to hold a real career because you're either in the garage doing work, or out of town trying to win money. When you knock someone out of the race that is depending on winning to keep food on the table, that hurts. You will absolutely be pissed the fuck off when this multi-millionaire just squeezed you into the wall, ruined your night, and cost you thousands of dollars in damage. All so Tony can have his fun driving around carelessly on dirt tracks. I would have done the same thing as Ward. I would immediately get out and try and ruin his night too.

Tony has no business in a sprint car. He sucks at them and causes wrecks because dirt track racing simply doesn't matter to him. Its a stupid hobby for him, but its a job for others.

It sounds like you may have been watching the YT video that has incorrect audio sync. Watch this one instead:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qILmIyG6qno

Also note that the sound of Stewart's engine will have been slightly delayed by the distance from the camera, about half a second. If you look at how the car behaves (left rear kicking up debris, for example) you can tell Stewart was applying power at the time.

The sound of the motor revving in the out-of-sync version is maybe 1-2 seconds before where it should be. Note that clip is of shorter duration, indicating whoever edited it down fucked up the sync in the process.

Reports from spectators indicate that Ward had been mixing it up with Stewart previous to his crash, not giving Stewart enough room coming out of 2 and 4. This gives additional context to Stewart's slidejob on Ward, and why he would have felt the need to punk the kid - not just by chopping his nose off in an inside-out slidejob but by barking at him on the yellow when he saw he was getting uppity. This is how 'hot-heads' operate.

>Ward, dirt racing is your job

Wrong. Racing is expensive, but it's a hobby for every person involved. You don't start being able make it a career until you hit the top levels, at which point you make enough money from sponsorships that you don't need to win every race.

Sprint cars and dirt track racing is all hobbyist-level and those guys usually have well-paying jobs or investments making them money to race.

It's obviously a local conspiracy. The rescue team clearly murders the Ward while he lies helpless on the ground. You can see it when the camera pans away. I read one of the guys was sleeping with Ward's girlfriend, which was probably the motive. All the rescue guys are from the same family.

I think a more likely scenario that both does and doesn't favor Stewart is that he could barely see shit from inside the car and his depth perception was fucked. Sprint cars regularly have holes cut in the roof so drivers can see around corners. NASCARs have the visibility of a convertible by comparison.

Canandaigua's lights are par for the course for dirt ovals. Sure, it's not Knoxville or some NFL stadium but they're much better than indicated by the accident video. The video of the 305 sprint I linked is closer to reality. Dust is something that cameras don't capture very well and can hinder visibility greatly, but I don't think it was a major factor in this.
