12 gauge for squirrel hunting?Anonymous 06/12/14(Thu)11:20 UTC+1 No.331679 Report
Does anyone here hunt squirrel with a 12 gauge? Would a 12 gauge with a modified choke loaded with #5 or #6 shot high brass be sufficient for hunting squirrel? Should I aim the sight bead in front of the squirrel's nose or next to the squirrel's head so that only a few pellets hit the squirrel? Should I use a different choke and/or number of shot? Any other advice for a beginner?
Take bird short, 5 or 6's medium load cartridge (dont know what's it called, in the US we call them 28 grams)
If you dont get too close you shouldent damage much, if any, of the meat. If you dont care about meat and it's for pest control, take a numer 4 cartrdige 30 grams and above to blast them through the leaves and out of their nests. (Fairly common method in the UK, Youtube has some vids on it)
>>331679 Not op, would aiming to the front of squirrel help reduce number of pellets embedded without impacting lethality? Also, I assume that one just has to manually remove all the pellets before cooking?
>>331744 The fox squirrels (the ones with the orange bellies) in Michigan are bigger than gray squirrels, yes. But the gray squirrels (which are almost all black) are a lot meaner.
>>331679 >>>/k/ Use a fucking .22 or a cheap air rifle (my $30 Crosman 760 drops squirrels just fine and pellets are a lot cheaper than bullets). You're going to eat it after you kill it, right?
>>332853 I never have pellets in my squirrels because I aim for the head. However, I've never removed shot from birds. I just spit them out. I let my cats play with squirrel tails, sometimes I put them in a container with catnip for a while.
>be 16 >dad has new gf >wealthy city girl from California >we're poor rural Wisconsinites >eating grouse because she's never had it >spit bb >"OH MY GOD THERE'S STILL BULLETS IN IT?" >laughter all around >she tears each piece apart before eating it >tell her it's steel even though it's lead because she's worried about lead poisoning Yuppies, man.
>>333719 You can also use steel shot then check meat using a magnet.
