Taking good nutrition /out/ is kind of a waste of time.

You should be eating right in all the days before you go out, to make your body in as good a shape as possible. Then when you go out you can feast on freeze dried meals and candy bars and etc.

Last time I backpacked with some folks who brought potatoes, they also brought an iron skillet (!). We split up a 30-pack of beer throughout 4 backpacks, which made it all OK. I was younger then.

If I'm going on a one or two night outing, I'll add the extra luxury weight to my pack in the form of beer, not potatoes. More satisfying after a walk.

I try to carry foods with most of the water removed. Also there are plenty of times, like now, when there is a red flag warning, so no campfires, stoves only. And I'm usually so beat that all I feel like doing is boiling some water and rehydrating a bag of freeze-dried stuff. I save the gourmet cooking for home.
