I just recently got back into fishing, after not doing so for maybe five years (since I was 14), and I've been completely unsuccessful. I've fished almost every day this week, and I've caught some bluegill and a chain pickerel, despite targeting bass. It seems like its rough not to be on a boat. Any tips for a new angler who can only bank fish? I'm in the hampton roads area of Virginia, if that helps.

get a mask and snorkel and see where the terrain is. Assuming the water quality is ok

that sounds like a good idea actually, thanks. where I've been fishing is pretty full of snapping turtles, so I'll have to watch out for them while I dive.

Shore fishing for bass sucks. Unless you're prepared to crawl through nasty brush and try to land them through weeds, it's no fun.

Get hip waders or one of those tube floaty thingies. Walk out into the water, get beyond the lilly pads and reeds, turn around and fish them.

get some frogs and jigs, you won't have bluegill coming after those and you can throw them into really thick cover. From the shore that's about the best fishing you'll do for trying to single out bass. Pic related is the frog I've been making a killing on this year, the Spro frog. As you can see the hook are wound around the back so you will never ever ever get it snagged (but you can totally still get your line caught up)

I think I found a picture of one without hooks, this is a good illustration of what the hooks are like

The best book I ever read about fishing is:

Where the Fish Are: A Science-Based Guide to Stalking Freshwater Fish by Daniel Bagur
