5D ,5Dmk ii or 1ds? Anonymous 07/22/14(Tue)20:05 UTC+1 No.2369330 Report

Hello /p/

I'm in the market for a FF camera (canon as I already have a 7d) and being a /p/easant brand new isn't an option, so I've narrowed the choce down to a second hand 5d classic, 5d mkii or a 1ds mk ii.
I'll be shooting landscapes and portraits with it so what are the pro's and cons of each?
I've heard that the menu system on the 1ds is a pain but it does have better AF than the 5d classic...other than that what are /p/'s opinions?

5D Mark II.

Leaps and bounds ahead of the 5D, and not that different from a 5D Mark III. Don't get the 1Ds unless you're a sports photographer

I'm pretty sure the 1DS isn't supported in windows anymore, I know my 1D MKII cant be read from a windows machine so I cant change the majority of the c functions anymore

OM-D E-M5.

Similar image quality to 5D Mark II.
Lens selection is incredible.
Lenses are cheap.
Body is cheap.
muh 5 axis for infinite low light ability.
not fool frame.

Despite being an old DSLR, it has the technology of their very last pro 35mm SLRs, so the autofocus is actually excellent even by today's standards.

The AF systems on the 5D and the 5Dmk2 leave quite a bit to be desired, but for landscape and posed portrait work, it won't bite you often. The 1Dsmk2 AF system is indeed MILES better, and if you were in the genres that really rely on AF on a regular basis, that would be the way to go, but you should feel okay trading AF performance for image quality for your stated goals.

Ok now I'm not so sure..I havea 7D already primarily for wildlife and wanted a FF for landscapes and portraits. Now the 1D AF system and burst rate are appealing but what about image quality? Is the 5D image quality better than the 1DS mark ii??

Yeah, not much reason to choose a 5Dmk2 over a 6D other than the feel of the camera, and price. The 1Ds mkII loses handily in the image quality department above ISO 640, but still kicks ass in the AF system.

Just bought a 5d classic off Ebay back in March. I am never going back to anything less than full frame because of how large the image is in the viewfinder and my bad eyesight. $550.

>Ok now I'm not so sure..I havea 7D already primarily for wildlife and wanted a FF for landscapes and portraits.

There's no real advantage to the 5D2 here vs. the 7D you already have. Well...razor thin DoF and lolbokeh for portraits. But you get tired of having only one eyelash on the model's face in focus after...well, after the first time you try it really.

The 5D2 has two advantages over the 7D: high ISO IQ and usability with Canon's fast wide primes and T/S lenses. You can use those lenses on the 7D, but the crop kind of sucks there.

If you're normally shooting ISO 100-800 then go for glass, not a 5D2. The Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 for landscapes. And fast primes for portraits. The Sigma 50 f/1.4 (non-ART) is reasonably priced and damn good.

OR...I suppose you could sell the 7D and grab the 1Ds mkII since it's FF and can handle wildlife. Then again if you go that route the 5D3 is probably affordable to. Which way to go depends on the glass you have now and whether or not you want better high ISO.

Anonymous 07/23/14(Wed)23:02 UTC+1 No.2370105 Report

>>2370096

The 7D I plan on keeping..I wanted a FF body...high ISO isn't really a concern as I shoot mainly at 200 anyway. I have a 100-400 f4.5-5.6 and a few old FD lenses which i use with a converter. However if the 1ds mkii can do all of the portraits, lanscapes and wildlife that might be the way to go!
Thanks Anon!

If it's any help to you, I shoot a 5Dmk2 and I'm highly considering selling it and getting a 1Dsmk2 just for the autofocus improvements. I shoot fast glass natural light stuff on a regular basis and even the center point on the 5D2 will miss the eyes on a fairly regular basis wider than f/2.8
