My D5100 is going crazy, the camera is something like three years old.

It started giving me this "Error press shutter release button again" I thought it was the lens (35mm 1.8G) and changed it but it still didn't work.

I removed the lens to see if there was something visibly wrong, like a bad placed mirror, or a damaged shutter. But everything seems fine, I used the cleaning the sensor mode and bulb mode and everything seemed in place at first sight.

Then suddenly it started to work without lenses. When I removed the lens and took a picture the error didn't appear and I could see an image in the display.

I started to try with the other lenses and sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't.
I thought it could be related to focal distance because only with the longest focal distance of the zoom lenses the camera worked. It didn't seem to work with the primes.

But playing around with the settings it worked with the primes, but only at maximum aperture. The same applied for the zooms, at different focal distances I only had to choose the maximum aperture for the camera to work.

Have any of you had the same or a similar problem?

Could it be a software issue or a more serious mechanical one?

Have you taken a pencil eraser to your contacts in the camera body? Weirdly, it solves a lot of random issues for a lot of people.

honestly both my D5000 and D5100 do that on occasion. I find its usually because the mirror sticks a bit. If it becomes a problem take it into Nikon and get them to lube it up a bit.

tried the contacts cleaning, it didn't work

The mirror seems to work ok, I discovered the body has an almost invisible crack near when the aperture hook is in the body. Maybe it was a small shock. I didn't want to reach the nikon repair service, in this shitty country there is only one stupid authorized nikon service centre long away from here.
