I have the same "problem" - as do any of us. I think it's what people mean when they refer to a "comfort zone" in photography, because that's what it really is - you're being cozy with what you know you can do because you KNOW you can do it well, you're confident and it's "safe" for you to do something you know how to do vs. taking a risk.

Whenever this happens to me, I look for new locations or concepts, or both. Some would say to "challenge yourself" but I think it depends. You don't really need to pull a 180 and spring for something entirely different, but changing it up on any level can be a huge help. For example, when I go to a place I've been before to take photographs, I always try to get something very different from the last time I was there, no matter if I was there yesterday or last week or last year. Every once in a while I'll try to re-do something I've already done and see if I can do it better, which may involve minor tweaks or changing things up drastically.

Just adding my two cents, since I understand your struggle so well.

two clicks of the adjustment brush http://help.adobe.com/en_US/lightroom/using/WS39A2F4C6-3758-4176-9D6D-B26477EC2C71.html

I think you made her skintones sickly in the second photo (assuming that's the edited one)
You're going for like an extreme or retro style but your baby isn't either of those.

what would you recommend? In my own mind, I didn't make her a jaundice baby, but then I don't have a good reference monitor to be able to do colors and I may have an issue with colors as well.
Is there a better way to do this than to skip back and forth between two images?

Thanks for the advice btw, I'll take away the extreme skintone.

Good to see you're still around! I still shoot, I just don't post online much anymore. Got locked out of my flickr account and like I said, by the time I scan the photos in and see how they turned out I don't really bother taking it further. I made a thread a month or two go with photos from the past year. Haven't even touched the 5 rolls of 35mm I shot in Europe last summer yet. Yikes.

>>2356819
Really great advice anon. I definitely find my neighborhood boring at this point. I've been telling myself I'm going to start shooting street/people but always wuss out. I think it would be a very beneficial direction to go.

What program are you using?

If Lightroom, use the adjustment brush to select what you want to play with.
If Ps/GIMP, mask out the part you don't want effected (google up masking techniques), and then apply an adjustment.

If you are going to keep recommending this to newbies I'm going to have to install and look at it again. ..and last time I did that was after using it, getting the shits with it, switching to RawTherapee and ebing very happy, but then trying DT again because someone kept pushing it.. and it gave me the shits again.
So I'm pretty sure if I look into DT again it's still going to piss me off and I'm going to go back to RT and wonder why the fuck people suggest DT.
..but I'm going to have to actually TRY DT again to know for sure......

you don't have to use dt for RAW development, and someone who is fairly new can assist to its workflow fairly easily.

dt's main function is that of Lightroom: organization and management... editing in it is just icing on the cake... further, you can still use rt for initial RAW processing and use dt for image management.
