There's an LGBT pride parade coming up in my city and I was wondering if /p/ had any advice for the kinds of shots and settings I should go for? Never done this kind of thing before

In fairness, it does.

Most people shooting a parade would focus on the floats and (like in your pic) the people, so you should try to be original and go for more abstract shots. If you can capture the feel of the thing indirectly, your photos will be far more interesting than the millions of snapshits that will likely come from this.

>more abstract shots
That sounds interesting. I've noticed photos of baseballs gloves and football helmets on benches getting magazine space over action shots of the players, if you are referring to that kind of thing.

Obviously, I would like to play some attention of the floats and people (probably not focusing on the parade but more on the "emotion"; photos of people watching, the Christians that come to protest, LGBT persons kissing etc.) but this idea does sound good.

I asked a similar question last year. I was told to go somewhere high enough to get the crowd and use a tele, if I can remember correctly. And maybe what this person intended didn't differ much from what >>2356575 said.

Anyway, didn't get a shot from above and I certainly wasn't much original, so I didn't achieve much that day.

Pics related. A couple of shots I took last year.

Snapshit from Toronto Pride 2014, Trans March.

Stay in shape, stay light on gear. b/c you're going to need to keep up with the parade, AND try to compose and shoot. Even an assistant won't save you if your out of shape.

There were a fuckton of protogs shooting that day, and by the end of the 45 minute march there we're about 4 people shooting.

I shot one of these once. A lesbian march, to be more specific.

I used a 35mm (around 50mm equivalent on my camera) and just got right in the middle of the crowd. No matter how organised they are, this sort of march always breaks up in smaller "blocks". I used that to get the distance right.

If you want to be more of a documentarian go for stuff that expresses love and humanity. I fucking hate seeing people just being graphically sexual in public in any context and I don't want the crazy Carnivale freak show experience. When two gay guys or gals share a really "real" moment I like seeing it because it reminds me that they're not just looking for an excuse to be obnoxious .

Or, alternatively, go for abstract shots - you might find some really cool stuff at that kind of thing.

You should wear a "God Hates Fags" shirt, or something that would incite a similar response and take photos of people reacting.

You would get the most powerful pictures out of anyone there.

Expert Mode: Bring a friend and have them wear the shirt or hold a sign or what ever and get dynamic shots of LGBT scum reacting to him with him in the photo so your pictures tell full stories instead of just implied ones.

BJDrew 07/07/14(Mon)12:27 UTC+1 No.2357531 Report

Try to find nice looking, properly dressed and LBGT people who are there having fun but not naked, covered in peacock feathers with a rhinestone cod piece, and take nice portraits of them - ask them "what is your greatest achievement" and use the responses as the captions for each image.

Definitely something like this. It's what's truly interesting--think of the power of real portraits or real candid shots of emotional moments. Now compare that to some attentionwhore attention whoring.

I would suggest something in the 9 - 45mm range.

Get down low and aim high.

Taking this level of unhealthy interest in their lives is more indicative of mental illness, to me.

Thanks for the advice, for those of you that actually did respond with advice...

Disregarding the asshole element, those pictures would just look like regular pictures of a gay pride parade, but with people having angry expressions on there face.

But yeah, man you can go ahead with that.

Look out for some muscular bearded men in tight underwear to take pics of and post here

Just be friendly to anyone that seems interesting and chances are, if they're dressed outlandishly and in a good mood, they'll prolly pose for you to take a pic.

Any shot where the subject is less prominent in the image than the composition can be considered abstract.
-Long exposure of floats going by.
-Shot of wierd thing on someone's head with only a little of their head.
-Any shot that's mostly rainbow
-Shot through the reflection from a building, distorting the scene
-Shot looking straight down so you know it's a city but don't know it's a parade at first
Any of those would count under some people's definition of abstract.
