so can we settle the debate once and for all?

is biology a hard science?

Yes but often there are so many variables that it seems like it isnt.

Hard? No.
But if you want to be any good at it time will be spent labouring over the details as without the details it won't work
It's like adding 1+1+1+1.... for ever, isn't particuarly dificult but there are no shortcuts

If biology is so easy then why is there no cure for cancer, diabetes, malaria, HIV, ect...What brilliant physicist wouldn't go into the field of biology, cure a disease, win a Nobel prize and become filthy rich from the US patent system protecting their product?

A single cell is really fucking complicated. A person can make a whole career out of studying one pathway or even on particularly important interaction in a pathway.

Anonymous 06/27/14(Fri)17:09 UTC+1 No.6614522 Report

It's simplistic to ask that question of 'biology'. A very large number of fields of varying rigor and precision are contained within the life sciences category. It all depends on the definition of 'hard' and the individual sub-field.

Whether you believe biology to be a 'hard science', just remember this. A single bacterial cell is more complicated than the sun.

Anything can be hard if one is not good at it.
It is a matter of personal perspective.

If you find biology hard, then simply study something that you are better at.

It shall become the most sought after science once religious people let us have our way and I can splice wolf spiders and fire ants together to create a terrifying pest. Because to me, I believe our reliance on technology is too heavy. We should do some hardcore natural selection and gene splicing to create beasts of burden. We could solve world hunger, have a manageable work force, and the universe would fear our dog elephants.

Why bother with classifying a field that will always be an intermediary between hard and soft science? There is too much vital complexity that can't be ignored for the sake of a model like in physics. Biology is not important because of its classification, but because it's the only natural discipline to focus on living matter over non living matter. If you disagree then have fun dying at 44 from infection and needing to bury half the children you produce.

Biology varies from hard sciences like molecular bio to soft sciences like ecology and 'sciences' like taxonomy which is pretty much glorified stamp-collecting.
