Why are skeletons fine in cartoons?

They're the remains of human beings, right? Most cartoons can't show dead people, but since the classic era they've been able to show skeletons and skulls? It's okay as long as the flesh has decomposed?

Well, you need one of two things for a peaceful, productive undead culture.

It either needs to be comprised of no members that hate the living (and all of those living need hold no hatred for the undead), or there need to be none of the living.

So far, all undead cultures in fiction have failed at achieving either of those peaceable states.

I'd imagine peaceful skeleton people would be comically pragmatic about their situation. Instead of a nihilistic, depressive tone, they would adopt a philosophy of making the best of dark situations, and finding levity in hardship. Sure they're skeletons, but that doesn't mean life is over, it's merely a different set of options. They find themselves amused by the fuss the living give over all things. Pain, survival, starvation, death, all appear as fleeting inconvenience when compared to the eternity they are given away from them. Whenever they fail, they merely have to pick their bones up and try again. The ride never ends, and as long as you maintain your enthusiasm for however long it takes, your success is guaranteed.

This brings to mind Vengarl from Dark Souls 2. Even though he's just a head sitting on a rock for all eternity, he feels no frustration because he had finally found peace and tranquility

Anonymous 08/19/14(Tue)20:37 UTC+1 No.34255234 Report

There was a small plotline my players followed one time. A cult of Pharasman heretics wanted to unite life, death, and undeath. So through crazy magic, they animated their own skeletons in their bodies and when they were slain by the pcs, their skeletons rose up out of their fleshy shells once again. The skeletons then channeled negative energy but as they healed flesh grew back onto their bones. If any of them had lived till their hp got back to their original life full hp total, they would have converted back to life again. Life to death, death to undeath, undeath to life.

Ever since then, I bugged the pcs with it it. Occasionally I'd say, you can feel something in your bones...something different, something deep inside you. It wants out...

Also for the same reason they could set up wherever they want without having to worry about having a sufficient supply of food and fresh water and all the rest. My advice would be to stick skelecity somewhere weird, that meatbags would have an extremely hard time to reach which is why it's safe, like the bottom of the ocean or something like that.

I don't think spookians would want isolation from mortals. They would be carefree people as said in >>34254693.
Ever read the divine comedy? Remember the purgatory, that bigass city of souls with poets, filosophers, craftsman and good people that where born before christ? Imagine that on the surface world. Mages, craftsman, craftsman, wariors ... they all could go there to talk to legends of aeons past, discuss news, ask for advice and even ask for help from the true undead. Now and then, one spookian would get bored and depart from skeletown... to learn, quest and live his unlife some more, but always with an home behind him.
And the apookians would enjoy that, for they where once alive. They would know that we are the same inside, and our diference lies on the soul and determination and courage. And should the need arise... well, it's a city of dead legends that only got thenselfs killed. And only learned from it.
Such is the spookian culture and beauty.

Huh, I think I might steal this. The afterlife in my setting shall feature the dead coming back to life as mischievous skeletons that will simply reform elsewhere if they're ever destroyed. Eventually growing bored with taunting the mortals and retiring to great necropolis that only they and truly powerful necromancers can find.
