Hive Queen Quest 8 QuestDrone 05/26/14(Mon)00:00 UTC+1 No.32358170 Report

Your drones work tirelessly to complete their work, but you have much to do. Your hive continues to expand and soon this planet will no longer bind you to its surface, but first thing’s first, you will need to finish your farm and mine.
You are the Hive Queen, and this small, unnamed planet is your home. You have helped the humans stay alive until their rescue arrives, if only to get them away from you sooner. The human named Ryan Lee has taken a liking to you, likely as a result of you saving his life, while the others seem to grow suspicious of your origin. They have spent the day gathering their tattered and damaged things, and tending to their wounded in the wake of the Herd Beetle attack.
The sun is just now rising on a new day. A crack of thunder is heard in the distance, followed by several more and a series of flashes of light. A storm, you suspect, but there is no rain.

Welcome back to Hive Queen Quest

Available research options
>Lightning gun
Very slow: potential of failure and destruction of sample device
>Human environment suit
Very Slow: a bulky looking, yet light weight suit composed of tightly woven fabric and small metallic plating covering the chest and forearms. The suit seems to react to injury to the user, and contains a number of devices the humans use to make up for their frail physical structure and sensitive biology. Study of this technology could offer insight into any number of research fields.
>Unity Drone salvage
Medium: The physical components of the drone are quite interesting. Opening it up and taking a closer look would give you a much better idea of how the device works (grants small bonus against Unity drones, and unlocks weapon, armor, and propulsion research options)
>Herd Beetle dissection
Fast: This massive beetle can hardly even fit into your hive entrance. It’s face is covered in strange eyes and spikes, while its body is protected by a thick armored carapace. Study of its biology could offer insights into new theories on armor development.

In another day your refinery will hatch, and in several more your first two sniffer drones will enter the world.

Your thinkers have alerted you to good news! It appears that the prototype developed to interface with the Unity drone is almost perfectly compatible with the Union technology as well. Either a result of the relation between them or some convergent design theory, but regardless this will cut down on the time needed for research. Your thinkers have already conducted tests, and feel they are ready to develop a final interface device, but they require the resources to do so.

You received a bonus because they both seem to use similar technology. Most of the differences are in the appearance. The human tech is more ergonomic and easy to assemble-disassemble, and is covered in "contact your system administrator" signs. Sure, meatwalls and creep are scary, but they're not exactly unexpected for giant bugs.
And while they might not be comfortable for their short stay in our hive, they don't have to be in there for longer than it takes for the storm to pass.

>>32358612

Also, you're both forgetting they don't have night vision like we do.
Our hive is, most likely, probably entirely unlit. If we keep them in the literal dark, all they'll hear and know is the skittering of workers and the pulsing of creep. Nothing advanced.

You turn to the sky. The lightning flashes never hit the ground, but continue to grow stronger, and the wind is picking up now. Your antenna is picking up some level of EM radiation, but if it is an ion storm you are unsure if that would be usual or not.

The storm is too far over the horizon still to get a clear signal. Your warrior hefts the antenna up and tilts it over to the side, pointing it directly to the flashing lights and thunder in an effort to get a better signal.

It...is not a storm. At least you hope not. You can detect high levels of radiation of various kinds being emitted in bursts, and a cloud of radio waves is clustered high above in a chaotic mess. It sounds like they are transmissions of some sort but you can't make them out through the garbled mess.

Another thunderclap and a bright flash of light, but this time the glow becomes much brighter, and a minuet later you can see something break through the clouds. A large metal object, tumbling end over end as its hull collapses in on itself. When it hits the ground it detonates several miles away into a bright ball of light, and then disappears, leaving only a smoldering crater.

The Humans seem to be cheering as the object falls, engulfed in flames. They have stopped assembling their shelters and a few are even climbing several of the trees to get a better view. They have become incredibly interested, and grey is throwing objects left and right from a large case looking for something.

Your thinker directs a worker in its duty, poking at the strange human device. The interface is complete, but is still being calibrated to translate the data.
The clouds part with a thunder clap that shakes the very foundations of your hive, and a object impacts a mountain miles away on the south side of the mossy plains. Your Warrior strains to keep itself and the antenna upright against the shock wave, and a moment later a second gust of wind from behind knocks your warrior forward. A massive ball of fire rises from the impact, and a hole in the clouds several miles across slowly closes back up. Your antenna can briefly make out a series of transmissions bouncing back and forth from a number of small objects high above, and your warrior can see six bright stars moving in unison across the sky on the far side of a massive metal object. Even in orbit your warrior can see it plain as day. A massive cylindrical object, many miles in length is being engulfed in flames. A cloud of dots buzzes around it like a nest of hornets.

Your drones quickly make their way to the human camp once the shock from the blast has subsided. You surprise several of the humans on guard duty as even they seem to be distracted with the battle overhead, but quickly detach the inert cables and let you pass. The workers get more than a few looks as they heft the beetles and carry them off, but the chance to see the battle itself through the parted clouds is far more appealing.

Small orbs of light flicker in the cloud of dots around the cylinder, and eventually it starts to curve into itself, like a reflection rippling in the surface of water. It gradually bows at impossible angles until eventually it collapses into a sphere of bent light that quickly evaporates.

Your drones make it to the site of the crash after a few hours of walking. Little remains.

Your drones split up and scour the crash site in search of survivors. You...think you found one.
A large array of circuitry embedded in a half-melted chunk of metal. It still hums slightly with a tiny bit of power, but appears to be dwindling quickly. It is sending transmissions in random directions, at random intervals at in an increasingly simple manner. The first few are elaborate broadcasts of some kind, then brief pulses of data, and now short beeps of random information. >Take it back to the hive

Your drones heft the massive array of circuits and make their way back to the hive, your warriors flanking the column to watch for any predators.

In the sky, three objects break through the clouds and arc over the jungle, each one being lead by a small orb of light that quickly flickers out and is replaced with the thundering roar of conventional thrusters.
"This is Swordfish of Halifax patrol, do you copy? Any one alive down here?"
"Repeat, this is Swordfish, do you copy?"
A moment later you hear a crackling sound as Grey hefts a small device to his face.
"Yes Yes! This is Acting Commander, Captain Trevor Grey of the Clark, we read you, over!"
"Glad to see you didn't get scraped in that mess. We will send a shuttle in the clearing to the south of you. Pack your bags, and don't forget to go before you leave."

The three shapes pitch up and their thrusters cut out, replaced again with the flickering orbs of light and they quickly accelerate, punching through the clouds with a boom.

"WE HAVE DONE THING FOR QUEEN!"
Your thinkers seem to have finished.

Union parliament has announced the exploration and habitation of the area Spinward of the Antonine Wall nebula. Colony charters will be issued to the commander of any discovering vessel of any habitable planet, and dividend payment for all associated crew.

>Commonwealth
Militarized remnant of the Earth Confederation's International Fleet. Passage past Proxima Centauri is forbidden by all fleets in accordance with the Proxima convention, except for the purpose of diplomatic meetings aboard Via Maris station.

>FTLComm
A method of direct FTL communication using quantum entangled particles. Destruction of one end results in the disablement of the other end. Both must be constructed together.

M-662
Uncharted red giant system, exploration assigned to USV Hope under Commander Richard Schneider

>Proxima convention
Marked the end of official hostilities between the Union and Commonwealth, and marked the boarder between the two.
Traditional conventions in the following years marked several declarations, including the banning of AI research and development, and the banning of the practice of the "colony drop" as seen in the Tranquility Impact.

>Earth Confederation
Defunct government overthrown by the Union.

>Union
The unified authority of the free peoples of the former Earth colonies operating under the authority of Colonial Parliament.

>Nebula
No data available

>First contact protocol
Series of laws to prohibit unintended rebellion or violence on newly annexed worlds. Discovering commanders are required to adhere to these protocols or forfeit all charter rights and dividend payments. All new sentient races MUST be classified as one of the following.
0- pre-history. No development or invention. Avoid contact.
1- pre-industry. Tendency towards tech worship and sudden acts of violence. Avoid contact.
2- industrial. First contact is recommended. Introduction of new manufacturing processes to produce dependency recommended prior to annexation.
3- post industrial. First contact must be performed at once. Prevent further development. Introduction of quantum computer processes to operate infrastructure to develop dependency is recommended prior to annexation.
4- pre-FTL. Classified as the moment a member of their species breaks orbit.

You look up and realize you have brought the Unity device into your cave already. Has time gone by that quickly? Goodness.
A large shuttle descends onto the clearing where the first human camp was located. Several bulky humans leap from the frame a impact the ground with a mighty thud. One one you can make out the word "Tankred" and the other "Tiny". The humans of the camp have packed their things and begin loading the shuttle with whatever scrap they can find in the debris of their first site.
"Hey junior." Lee says, rather quietly. "I have to go now, but I wanted to thank you again for saving me back there....and I wanted you to have this." He holds out a small silver box, as he opens it a small flame flickers out and he closes it again before holding it out to you.
You take it, somewhat confused over the gesture.
"You said you didn't have fire so, maybe it will help."

You link into the drone using the interface device, and immediately the device reacts.

>System found. downloaded data....ERROR
>Theseus not found. Resuming function.

The drone shoots out a beam of light from its eye, scanning the lab.
>Target not found, activating homing beacon....beacon not functional, initiating self destruct...

The drone begins to hum loudly, and the room starts to shake. Your thinkers quickly pull its power, and the device grows dormant. The Unity computer seems to return to life, however, and is broadcasting a new signal to the drone's few circuits that hold battery power.

>Report
>Respond
>Cease hunting protocols
>Activate remote sensor control

The drone hums momentarily until its reserve power drains. In the fleeting moments its eye is locked onto your drones. Just before the drone shuts down you hear a new signal sent through the drone.

I don't think a full alliance will be very good as the AIs will just murderhobo too often for us to live in peace. However, I'm sure we could set up a relay and basically be an ear for them to whisper their biological secrets to.
